If you've ever been curious about fighting games and wanted to get into them, but you weren't sure which one to play there are two schools of thought. They are both correct.
The first is whatever you think is the coolest. If there's a licensed fighting game based on an IP you love, or you saw a cool clip, or the art/music/characters resonate with you: go with that one.
The second school of thought is one of the many well designed cheap to free minimalist fighting games. For a long time my go to was Fantasy Strike, and in some ways it still is. But after playing a new one for hours, I've got a new recommendation:
This game is so fucking fun. It's so intuitive, and the simplicity of everything comes together really well. It runs in your browser and has best in class netcode. You don't have to download anything or use any kind of controller. This shit is excellent.
Tough Love Arena is a web-based, indie fighting game with rollback netcode that's 100% free to play.
