the young dragon’s life had been built on previous complexities. the lie family was filled with layers upon layers of secrets, hidden politics, snakes in the grass. why did the lie patriarch shelter his beloved dragon faunus as he did   ?   why did he not allow li to remain in the lie estate for longer than a few days   ?   why were lie children not allowed to leave until they could attend universities, huntsman academies, or enlist in the military   ?   all that, ren had been sheltered to, he had nothing more to worry about than completing his studies and waiting for li to come home.

the puppy’s very presence was an exercise in temptation, one ren knew had it not been for jaune they could have won over. they could find the dog a home that would love and care for him, one that wasn’t theirs. because despite being an old man in a young adult’s body ren had doubts about whether their level of responsibility was enough. ren was perfectly aware the dog was there, but stopping themselves from staring at it was just so hard. it’s so cute. it reminds them of the akita puppy they had as a child, in addition to that ren had always had a weakness for the earnest and trustworthy nature of dogs. huh ... familiar.

it was comical, the way ren slowly closed their book, staring the puppy down as if they might win something from this staring contest. they placed the novel down, looking left and right before slipping down to the floor. even when sitting down like this, the puppy still needed to look up to stare at ren’s face. ‘ you know you can’t stay with us forever, right ? just because jaune wants to keep you. ’ to that question, the samoyed placed two paws on ren’s legs, proceeding to lie in ren’s lap and twisting his head in that damnably adorable way dogs do. ‘ you can’t. we can’t always be here to take care of you. you need to be wormed, and neutered. the average cost of dog in the first year of ownership is around one thousand lien — ’

it was futile. the puppy made a small whine in response to ren’s increasingly negative tone, and they stopped immediately, hands coming down to grasp either side of the canine’s face to scritch and scratch at it. why ? it was in ren’s nature to acclimate, to comfort, and soothe over any wounds whether physical or emotional. the dog leant into their hands in a way that was familiar and made their heart burst. it occurred to ren why, as they’d seen jaune do the same thing time and time again. ‘ no ... ’ ren murmured in defeat, as they continued to pet the dog. ‘ no, no, no ... ’ they kept on repeating, as they hoisted him into their lap, proceeding to cuddle him until his tail started wagging. ‘ we can’t — we can’t have a dog ... ’

the aura infused streak in ren’s hair was a perpetual reminder of what jaune was willing to sacrifice for them. while it was profoundly humbling that someone would be willing to give up his life for ren, something lurched in their gut whenever they saw it. in that same second it took to stare at themselves in the bathroom mirror, they could recall with vivid terror the sight of jaune’s lifeless blue eyes, the way his bloodied hand fell limp from their cheek, the feeling of trying to chase his pulse under pale, lifeless skin. what ren tended to fear, logically, were not tangible things. they feared not pain, sickness, or grimm. they feared concepts. they feared fate, and judgement.   they feared loss.   the memory had become ren’s new nightmare. their new nuckelavee.

who is a morning person. jaune. while ren is normally up earlier, it’s not really a voluntary thing. they’re just an incredibly light sleeper, and their circadian rhythm is geared towards rising before dawn. jaune, bless him, is a key factor in allowing ren to sleep in. 

are they cuddlers. serial. even though ren’s not a typically cuddly person, jaune is one of the only exceptions. they can go for long bouts of simply being near jaune and not touching him, but occasionally it’s all they want to do. ren’s very much like a cat, takes their affection whenever they want it.

who is the big spoon. ren, more often.

what is their favourite sleeping position. falling asleep over each other’s heartbeats is a classic. it was initially one of the only things that could comfort each other, even before they were officially together.

what they wear to bed. ren wears robes and cropped hoodies, sweatpants or loose - fitting linen pants. when it gets worn down, ren sometimes wears jaune’s pumpkin pete hoodie, or an old pair of jaune’s pyjamas. jaune still wears his onesie but i doubt he wears it to bed all the time. in some threads he has boxers or a tank top, a t-shirt, or a regular sleep shirt.

who likes seeing the other wearing their t-shirt. jaune, definitely. and ren likes stealing them.

who falls asleep mid - conversation. i feel like this would happen between the both of them a lot. a lot of their important heart to hearts happen when they’re in bed and just whispering to one another, despite the fact that no one else can hear them. ordinarily, ren can’t find themselves sleeping peacefully around people they don’t know, but with jaune it’s easier to fall asleep just listening to his voice.  they don’t fall asleep while talking, but sometimes they hum or sing lullabies.

who wakes up in the middle of the night with nightmares. jaune more often. ren isn’t capable of deep sleep long enough to reach the point where they can dream, so more often than not, they’re the ones who try and slow down jaune’s midnight / early morning panic attacks.

who said “i love you” first. technically, ren. but they didn’t know, they were half asleep. even when jaune said it the first time, it didn’t register in the beginning. they’re dorks, and i hate them.

who’s the most creative when it comes to gifts. i believe that jaune is. the both of them aren’t very materialistic, and ren tends to lean towards giving, and liking more practical gifts or things which jaune has already mentioned wanting, which can’t always be considered very creative.

what couple traditions they have. the night before one of them attends a solo mission, they tend to make a blanket fort in the living room and just snuggle while watching movies. sometimes they count each other’s scars to make sure there aren’t new ones when they come back. ren tends to give jaune a haircut before he leaves.

how they spend time together as a couple. they nap together, a lot. they spend a lot of time out in the field, so their home is decked out with places to just relax and unwind. they have a hammock, and a sitting area in the backyard. they have a home cinema in the living room, with all the components necessary to make a blanket fort. they probably get a hot tub at one point, tbh, and just drain it when they’re going on missions.

who made the first move. jaune was the one who confessed “i’m falling for you” but given the circumstances, ren thought that he was joking. ren was the one who kissed jaune first.

who brings flowers home. jaune does so more. he’s a sap, ren loves him for it. sometimes they have bees in them though.

who is the best cook. ren is more ambitious when it comes to cooking. they have more expertise culinary knowledge but when it comes to meals that make you feel good, the home cooked kind that you know is made with love, and tbh, the kind of meal that ren prefers over their fancy restaurant grade recipes, then it’s jaune.
