Finding meaning in the little things✨ || #becauseiamagirl

So my last post about being a #girl – The poem above was inspired by my niece, my brother’s daughter, who holds a special place in my heart. Maybe it comes from vanity, as everyone says she is the most like me with similar mannerisms :P or maybe its because she was the first girl I saw grow up before my eyes. She was born when I was 19 and I was going through my own transition from girl to woman and here was this delicate thing.   My sister (especially her) and I grew up really fast, and I loved the childlike quality that she maintained for the longest time (I still miss it to be honest – cause now she is an teenage who knows everything :P). The innocence and gentleness was something that I both admire and worried about. So, I protected her - probably overprotected her. But as she got older, I realized that the greatest lessons we learn come from trying, failing and succeeding. Today is one of the most important days for girls everywhere!! And yes I include women in this even though I say girls. I am fortunate enough to live in a country where girls have access to an education and the opportunity to better themselves. There are many places in the world where girls don't have the same opportunity, which is completely unacceptable! Regardless of who you are, how much money you make, or who you're connected with having access to equal opportunities should be mandatory for all. It breaks my heart that there are girls in today still struggling to obtain the same abilities I have. But the fact this day exists, fills me with hope because of the awareness it brings to those who don't realize it's importance. In the past I've taken what I have for granted because it's something every girl in the U.S. has. I know better now then to ever take it for granted and to push forward in the fight for equal opportunity for my fellow girls across the world. #internationaldayofthegirl #becauseiamagirl #equalopportunityforall

"You get prettier every time I see you" Don't shoot the messenger... "I like the messenger" Both these comments were said to me by senior ranking officers in the last 2 weeks. A little flirting and I could probably use them to advance my career. Or I could add the comments to my growing list of inappropriate things that have been said to me as of late. So, what to do? Advance my career? Sell myself out? A little flirting can't really hurt can it? I can't believe it's 2017 and I'm having to ponder using my sexuality to get ahead. I finished top in my class. I've had nothing but exceptional performance evaluations. I've never had a negative documentation, public complaint, or even an informal complaint! And yet here I am being recognized simply because I'm pretty.
