❝ I have been generous up ‘til now; I can be cruel. ❞
— For one long moment, time seems to still around Morrigan, and then it twists, reordering the world in a new pattern of Cain’s own creation. It’s not a surprise, really; Morrigan is fond of Cain, yes, but that doesn’t mean she trusts him. The man has always been a ticking time bomb, and having him close was always a risk. However, she had honestly thought he would focus his ire on Briar or Mei, an altercation removed from Morrigan that she would have no choice but to insert herself in.
She hadn’t trusted him, but she had expected him to be smarter than to come for her himself.
“Oh,” she says, and it’s pity that drips from her smile. “Darling, you’re new to this game, and I am not unaware of the debts I owe you, so I will be gentle.” She sets the cocktail shaker in her hand down, and moves around the mini-bar so there are no obstacles between them. If he wants to come for her, Morrigan wants to give him his best shot.
“I understand it, I really do. You have seen me weaker than most, Cain, and with that comes… doubts. People like us, doubts generally lead to grand ideas; We can’t help it, we’re ambitious. You think just because a pretty boy with a sword slayed me, I should have some kind of respect for you. You won, after all, fairy magic be damned.”
Morrigan looks him over now, and is a little ashamed at her own affection. What is Cain, if not yet another angry man who feels entitled to her dedication? “What you have forgotten is that you are a child, and a lonely one at that.”
“Phillip didn’t kill me, not really. What killed me was fairy magic and cold iron– And while the last is in high supply, good luck finding a fairy in this town who doesn’t owe me a favour.”
“More importantly, Cain, was the fact that in the end, none of that matters. We both know what decided our fates all those years ago. Love saved you, just as surely as it damned me.” Morrigan takes a step closer, her voice dropping into a whisper. “So come for me, if you want, Beaufort. But remember: No one loves you, now.”
