For DWC: gifts and treasures for Hawke x Merrill please?
f!Hawke/Merrill, âA Pretty Present, Never Mind the Bloodâ (AO3)
âYou think sheâll like it?â, Hawke asked, as she nervously fiddledwith a piece of loot which sheâd obtained from Chateau Haine.
Varric reached out for it before inching back reflexively, lookingup at Hawke cautiously.
âOh, for Andrasteâs sake,â Hawke said, âIt wasnât my giftthat exploded Merrillâs house, it was her revenant-in-a-phial. Itâsperfectly safe, stop being such a fussbudget, Varric.â
âAll right, if you say so,â Varric said as he picked the necklace up,from the table in the Hanged Man where the two of them had agreed to meet, studyingits features. âMakerâs left nut, Hawke, how many rubies are on thisthing?â
âFive,â Hawke said with some small degree of pride. âAnd I believeitâs nielloed with silverite, to boot. So, what do you think?â
Varric turned it over, studying the necklace and its facets. âWell,ah, the thing here isâŚâ
Hawke buried her head in her hands. âSheâs going to hate it.â
âI didnât say that.â
Hawke peeked up at him past her forearm. âYou didnât need to.â
âWell, I think the thing here is that donât get me wrong here, weall like the shiny things you get us, and I always appreciate it whenever youget me one of those belts with the pouches for more grenades and smoke bombs, but the gift kind of has to suit the person.â
âSo, you donât think it suits her?â
âHawke, did her former domicile exactly say glitter and opulence?â,Varric asked.
âWell, no, but thatâs only because none of ours really do,â Hawkesaid, âI mean, besides my place, and the mansion Fenris is slumming in, andactuallyâŚI just realised Iâve never been to your familyâs house after yourbrother, well, ahâŚdeparted his.â
Varric shrugged. âItâs nothing to write home about. Unless youâreme, in which I do write back home to that very place.â
âAnyway,â Hawke said, âJust because she lives in the Alienagedoesnât mean that she canât aspire to intricate shiny things and nicer digsâŚforthat matter, she is upgrading to my mansion, so there you go.â
Varric took a swig of his ale, before replying, âI think youâreletting this argument get away from you there, Hawke. Also, where in the world didyou get this from?
Hawke was silent.
âSeriously? A crate somewhere in Chateau Haine? Or off afallen guardsman somewhere in there?â Varric asked. âDare I ask if you washedthis thing, or if those are in fact topazes?â
She snorted. âDonât be ridiculous. I wash everything I hand to youguys. Well, most of everything. I even sent this to be polished before Iwas going to give it toââ
A new voice sounded in the Hanged Man. âGiving it to whom, Hawke?Ooh, itâs so pretty!â
Even a paralysis glyph couldnât have held Hawke and Varric in placebetter as they were utterly frozen by Merrillâs sudden presence. Many longseconds passed before they turned around to address her.
âWell, this isââ
âOh, Daisy, hey there, Iââ
âDonât mind me, I came back home and saw you werenât here, so I askedthat nice Master Bodahn and he said you were meeting with Varric,â Merrill said, leaning in and commenting, âWell, whoeverâs going to get it is going to be veryflattered. OneâŚfourâŚfive rubies on it! It must be expensive. Unless you justfound it outside somewhere. In which case itâs free. I think. So, Hawke, whoâreyou trying to impress with this?â
Hawke, jaw half-open, looked helplessly at Varric.
âLooks like the gift matches the recipient after all,â he said, finishinghis drink and getting up to leave for his lodgings at the Hanged Man. âStage isall yours, Hawke.â
Getting up and taking Merrillâs hands in hers, Hawke told her, âItâsfor you.â
âFor me?â, Merrill asked, âOh, whatever would I do with it? ItâssoâŚbig. And shiny.â
âYou could wear when you want to impress guests,â Hawke said, âOrunder your scarf when weâre outside. Iâm pretty sure itâs magic, so it mighthelp you out?â
âYouâre so thoughtful, Hawke,â Merrill said, putting the chainaround her nape and letting it hang over her scarf. âAlthough, I do have toaskâŚâ
âYes?â
âDid you find it in a box? Or off a corpse?â
Hawkeâs lip trembled as she tried to find an answer. âAh, well,IâŚisnât it beautiful? Look at the etchings! I think thatâs silverite.â
âYouâre so right!â Merrill squealed. âI love it, Hawke! Even if youmissed a spot washing the blood off it. Ooh, I guess that answers that questionof mineâŚâ
