Peeta looks far too handsome, I decide, leaning against the windowpane in Prim’s room, and watching him chop wood for our fires. I had my reservations about the beard, but the golden scruff suits him, at least for this cold season.

Prim, studiously ripping the seams from a dress Cinna sent her several Capitol fashions ago, in order to give the fabric to the seamstress for some poor soul to use, gives a soft snort.

“What?”

“Your tea must be hot,” Prim says.

I frown down at my mug of basil tea. “No?” I say. It’s gone cool in my hands as I’ve been watching my husband. “Why?”

“Your face is all red,” Prim says. “Or is it the broad shoulders and toned back down there?”

I scowl at her, which confirms it.

“There’s no shame in ogling your husband, Katniss,” my sister giggles. “It’s your anniversary this month after all.”

“I do not ogle,” I say bitingly, but I know do. I can’t help it. My eyes even now dart back to the yard behind the house, and my husband catches my gaze. I’m too fond of Peeta’s dimples and the cleft in his chin to let him keep the beard permanently, but I can’t find it in me to mind it now. I smile at him and he smiles back, pretending to toss me a kiss.

“You want to shave me?” he asked as she wet the cloth and then covered his face with it.

“Hey, I’ve indulged plenty of your fantasies.” She smiled as she held the steaming towel against his skin to soften the coarse hair, and he laughed from behind it. “That is true.”

"And we’ve got time." 

 He lifted her onto the countertop between the two sinks, leaning in to kiss the tip of her nose as he pushed her hair off her shoulder. “Then by all means,” he said, tugging off his t-shirt.

So she lathered his face with the foam, but as she raised the razor, he intercepted and gripped her wrist. “I hope you’ve got a steady hand, Cupcake.”
