FOOD Share’s annual Tackle Hunger campaign aims to raise 150,000-pounds of food for holiday seasonÂ
Food bank supporters gear up for 3rd annual CAN-tree Collection event
(VENTURA COUNTY, Calif.) – FOOD Share kicked off its annual Tackle Hunger campaign last week with an event which drew community, business and agricultural leaders to celebrate and pledge their support to help the regional food bank achieve its goal to raise 150,000 pounds of food byÂ
Beacon Coffee and Ventura County Credit Union (VCCU) were the first to contribute to the food and funds drive; the coffee retailer presented FOOD Share with a check for $3,000 and the credit union committed to donate 10,000 canned goods for Tackle Hunger’s signature event, the CAN-tree Collection.

“Our Tackle Hunger campaign comes at the most critical time during the year when we need the most support from our community, and we hope this signature event will give us the boost we need to help serve our hungry friends,” said Bonnie Weigel, president and CEO of FOOD Share.
The 3rd annual CAN-tree Collection will return to The Collection at RiverPark the weekend of Dec. 5-7. The fun-filled three-day event co-chaired by County of Ventura CEO Mike Powers and Wells Fargo District Director Carmen De Arcos Gonzales will bring together business, community and faith-based groups to build their own “can-trees” as part of their fight against hunger. With a goal of 150 can-trees this year – each built from approximately 600-800 cans – teams will construct 5-foot-tall can-trees to be showcased throughout the weekend. The centerpiece of the spectacular display will be The Collection’s own can-tree made from the 10,000 canned goods pledged by VCCU and assembled by students of ACE Charter High School.
“It’s not okay that more than 45,000 children in Ventura County don’t know where their next meal will come from, and that seniors are going hungry. Today, more than 18,500 families per month need the support of FOOD Share each month,” stated Powers. “This year, we’re not just building can-trees, we’re going to build a forest, so that we can provide thousands of meals for those in need this holiday season.”

 About FOOD Share:
More than 35 years ago, eight citizens performed a good deed by distributing food to those who were in need underneath a Ventura bridge. The early philanthropic movement quickly formed into what is now Ventura County’s regional food bank, FOOD Share, which has grown from serving a few hundred hungry people per month to 74,500 people. Today, staff and volunteers distribute more than 10 million pounds of food annually from its distribution site; more than 180 partner agencies, which include neighborhood and church food distributions and soup kitchens; as well as hunger assistance programs. FOOD Share’s programs provide healthy nutrition and education to children, families and seniors, which include: KIDS Share, SENIOR Share, Nutrition Education, Community Market, SoCal Gas CARE Program, ART Share and more. A 501(c)3 non-profit organization, FOOD Share is a member of the Feeding America network, the nation’s largest hunger-relief organization.
