As someone who tends to be spellbound by edgy, ground breaking talent, particular ones that delve into the darker side of things, I can’t help but be incredibly, ridiculously excited by Londoner Georgia Barnes. I’d previously encountered her song Move Systems, but her latest envelope pushing, noisy electronic treat Be Ache is even more of an eye widening, hair raising experience (in a good way). The grimy, industrial tune drones and bursts with fantastic, lurchy movement, like a gripping fusion of PC Music, Grimes, Sleigh Bells, TR/ST, FKA Twigs, and everything in between. Georgia will be releasing a debut album come August 7th on Domino Records, and I promptly pre-ordered the record earlier today upon listening to trippy, stormy Be Ache. Catch the video for Georgia’s Move Systems below, which is more of a gritty M.I.A.-ish clattering, spunky explosion of glorious noise. I can’t wait for Georgia’s debut album.
Georgia - Be Ache
GEoRGia - Come In
Another Londoner offering us some very odd and alternative pop and this is her latest release after the stand-out tracks Be Ache and Digits. She was initially a drummer for Kwes and did some stuff with JUCE but this is her first official release.
Track of the day //Â GEoRGiAÂ - Be Ache
Kwes and Kate Tempest’s touring percussionist puts those dizzying drum patterns to good use on debut solo track ‘Be Ache’. Frenetic, abrasive electronic pop, in a similar vein to Crystal Castles and The Knife.
GEoRGiA's 'Come In' EP is out on Kaya Kaya Records next week.

GEoRGiA - Be Ache
"Be Ache" by Georgia
MG:
It's only fair that after not falling in love with JUCE, I admit, I have fallen in love with JUCE-member Georgia's art-pop collage. Both "Be Ache" and "(H)ours" are the work of relative beginners, catchy but transparent in their movements. "Be Ache" layers bits of sound until a sticky melody and tight groove are established, both moody and maroon, the very last bit of fading light in the twilit sky. In that liminal space, Georgia mixes vocal pulses with trip hop synthesizers. "You're making me/ The enemy," she sings, crystallizing the song's dark energy.
DV:
There's promise for Georgia's future in "Be Ache," even as the track fails to fully deliver. There's an intriguing premise in the mix of samples, beats and vocal distortion on display here, a stab at the sort of forward-thinking pop that creates and establishes the potential futures of the genre. But there's just not enough song to "Be Ache" to justify the strangeness, and so the track sounds like an overly-long interlude, not the experimental pop that it seemingly aims to be. The hook is too flat to propel the song, the vocal filter saps energy from the lyric rather than complementing it, and the production seems like chaos for chaos's sake without anything to anchor it.Â
I feel almost bad piling on "Be Ache": we need failed experiments as much as we need successful experiments, since they're what lead to successful experiments. And this is undeniably an interesting one, if nothing else. But ultimately, "Be Ache" sounds more like a teaser asking you to check out Georgia's next work than a satisfying piece in itself.
