When he opened his eyes, he saw green; layers upon layers of various shades of it, from dark emeralds to shining jades. He lifted his hand to the leaves, watching as the sunlight broke through the branches, and breathed deep, taking in the fresh morning air.
Sam bounced on his heels a bit to stretch his legs and then broke into a run, pumping his arms and his heart, waking his muscles, pushing the blood to flow faster. He felt good, alive, strong.
He barely felt the ground beneath his feet, it was like he was running on a cloud. Dew from the canopy misted down on him, keeping him cool against the warming sun.
Sam’s sprint slowed as the forest grew fuller. Finding it harder to keep to a straight path, he slowed to a walk and pushed through the lush foliage, suddenly stepping into a clearing. He stood at the edge of a wildflower field; the greens of the woods giving way to bright yellows and pinks. The treetops parted to a bright blue sky, and a gentle breeze brought the scent of vanilla and lavender towards him.
Not far from where he stood, Sam saw a familiar face. Y/N was dancing amongst the flowers; her hands high above her head, her hips swaying gently to a song he couldn’t hear. Her hair cascaded down in soft waves that blew in the wind, her eyes closed and turned towards the sun. Sam stared forever, taking in every tiny detail, from the curve of her eyelashes to the way her thighs brushed together as she moved. He was entranced, drawn to her by a force stronger than fate, and when he could fight it no longer, he took a step forward.
“Looking for something?”
Dean’s unhappy tone flowed down the hall, stopping Y/N as her hand hovered over the door knob of room 7B.
She jumped back and pulled the speaker from her right ear. “Huh?”
“I wouldn’t go in there,” he said, coming to a halt a few inches away.
Y/N gave him a curious look and backed away slightly. “Why? What’s in there?”
Dean sucked his teeth and leaned over her, twisting the knob and shoving the door open, giving her a peek. “Just files.”
“So why can't I go in?”
Dean shrugged and pulled the door shut just as Y/N leaned forward, trying to slip inside for a better look. “It’s dusty,” he said as the catch engaged. “What are you doing over here anyway?”
“I was just… um…” She swallowed hard and pulled her sweatshirt sleeves down, hiding her anxious fingers. “I kinda got turned around. I was looking for the kitchen.”
Dean narrowed his eyes at her, half in disbelief, half wondering if they had any bacon left. “That's the other way,” he said with a little smile. “I’ll show you.”
They did have bacon left. Quite a lot of it, actually, and Y/N helped Dean make the last few strips disappear as they waited for the second pot of coffee to brew.
“You can sure pack it away,” Dean commented, watching Y/N lick her fingers, savoring the last piece of bacon.
“I like bacon,” she shrugged.
“Well, we got that in common,” he laughed and then cleared his throat, sitting back with his mug, staring at her.
“What?”
Dean frowned and shrugged. “Nothing.”
“You’re staring.”
“I do that sometimes.”
Y/N set her elbows on the table and leaned forward, staring right back. “You don’t trust me, do you?”
Dean pursed his lips, showing off his disgruntled dimples. “What, you reading my mind again?”
“No,” she said gently. “But I can see your face.”
“It’s just my face. I can’t control it.” His eyes twitched, narrowing a bit at her.
Y/N sat back and shook her head, defeated. “You don’t trust me.”
“I don’t know you,” he countered.
“If you don’t trust me, why did you take me in?” She asked, emotion rising in her voice.
“Sam thinks you need our help.”
Y/N nodded and looked away for a moment, her eyes flitting back and forth between spots in the void. “And you?”
Dean sighed and set his mug down. “I think we have bigger problems right now than some random chick needing our help.” Y/N looked back at him, sadly, and he went on, softening his tone. “But I also think that maybe you can help us.”
She swallowed hard, visibly nervous about his statement. “Help you how?”
Dean took a breath and looked down at his hands, wrapped tight around his mug. He promised Sam he’d give her some time, and she still looked like hell, the bruise on her face seemed to be growing by the minute, but time wasn’t something they had much of these days. “Well-”
“Mornin’!” Sam burst into the room, fresh from a shower, his hair still damp and curling slightly under his ears.
Dean cleared his throat and stood up with his mug under the guise of getting a refill. “Morning.”
Sam looked to Y/N and froze, seeing the definite pain in her eyes. “What happened?”
Y/N looked up to answer him, but Dean stepped in.
“Just getting to know each other,” he lied, filling his mug. “There's eggs in the pan. Your girlfriend ate all the bacon,” he added under his breath, lips half wrapped around the rim of his mug.
Y/N held in a smile and Sam scoffed. “She-Wha-Thanks.”
Dean hummed as he walked off, leaving an awkward silence in his place. Sam blushed and rubbed the back of his neck, feeling Y/N’s eyes travel his face. When he looked up, they were there, shining bright under beautiful lashes and Sam struggled to find his voice; his dream suddenly washing over him.
“Dean's...a jerk,” he choked out suddenly, trying to downplay the girlfriend comment.
Thankfully, Y/N laughed, and Sam’s jaw dropped slightly, amazed by the light her smile brought to her face.
“Yeah,” she nodded, looking away bashfully. “I've noticed.”
He smiled in return, relaxing a bit. “Can I get you anything?” he asked while moving to the stove.
“I'm good,” she grinned and held up her coffee. “I think I ate too much anyway. I was trying to keep up with your brother.” She sat back and rubbed her stomach. “Not a good idea.”
Sam shook his head as he scooped luke warm eggs onto his plate. “Yeah. Bad idea,” he agreed with a chuckle. “Never go shot for shot with Dean. That goes for whiskey as well as bacon.” Sam turned to see Y/N staring at him sweetly, her head tipped to the side, a strip of hair covering her cheek.
“I'll try to remember that.”
Her eyes never left him, traveling with him as Sam took the seat Dean had left, pushing his empty plate to the side. His cheeks burned under her gaze and he willed himself not to freak out, although, deep down he craved the attention. It had been forever since anyone had looked at him, really looked, like Y/N was now, and the butterflies in his gut were strangely welcomed.
“Sam?”
Her voice broke his will and he met her eyes. “Yeah?”
Y/N bit her lip as she pondered her words and Sam's heart sped up like a rocket.
“Uh, Dean...said he thinks you might need my help,” she said softly, and Sam calmed a bit, straightening up and assuming an air of professionalism.
“Oh?”
“What did he mean? Help you with what?”
“Well…” Sam set his fork down and took a breath. “We kinda have a...it's like a doorway to… it's… it's a long story.”
Y/N sat back and nodded. “I literally have no where to go.”
Sam gave a weak laugh and ran his fingers through his hair, scratching gently behind his left ear. “OK, so… Lucifer had a son…”
