He is. Swiftpaw is his oldest child. His sister, Lynxkit, died very young. She passed away in her father's paws, and burying her was the most painful thing Tigerclaw had ever experienced.

When Swiftpaw is killed by the dogs, Tigerstar accuses ThunderClan of not protecting him and letting him die to spite him, then demands for Tawnykit and Bramblekit to be given to him. There's no evidence that he'd set up the pack at that point, and Tigerstar doesn't see Swiftpaw as "collateral."

THEY must sent him out scouting. Tigerstar doesn't take any responsibility for this.

Redtail is Longtail's dad in BB, and the brother of Sandstorm. It SHATTERED his world to find out that Tigerclaw, his friend, the mentor-of-his-mentor, took him away. He questioned everything he ever knew. He was unraveling everything from that moment.

And it was too late.

Swiftpaw was well into his training. He'd taught him everything he knew, everything about strength, serving your Clan, that to die for a cause was the true purpose of a warrior. To give up your life is what having one is for. It was past the point of no return.

He died the way he was taught. Longtail escaped, looked over his shoulder, and watched his apprentice torn to shreds before he could save him too. He buried a half-eaten corpse.

It changed him. Longtail couldn't do anything else for his apprentice besides promise he would never let this happen, ever again. From that point on, he was a lot more considerate of what he told others, as if he'd aged years in a day.

While training Jaypaw, there's times where he sees a bit of Swiftpaw in him. Headstrong, committed, with a sharp tongue and a lot of anger bottled up inside him. It stings. He misses him all the time... both of his apprentices. He's a really good mentor, struck by tragedy twice.
