In an anaerobic system the majority of the chemical energy contained within the starting material is released as methane. The anerobic decomposition is slow process and takes 4-6 months to complete. The composting is carried out in pit. The refuse and night soil are put in alternate layers in the pit and the pit is covered, creating anaerobic conditions. In this method pathogens are killed effectively and foul smell is controlled.
