I don't know who needs to hear this but you need to train your dog in everything, including but not limited to
- walks. Yes, train your dog how to walk good it will make your life so much easier.
- patience. They shouldn't be all over you as you get their dinner ready
- social behavior. You need to socialize your dog as much as possible. If you've only ever lived with your family and some stranger comes in, you would probably be alarmed too. Socializing includes with other dogs as well, your dog needs dog friends, I know that sounds weird but its true, look into dog parks, or friends/family with dogs.
- aggression. This one is pretty obvious, don't allow anything rough to slide. If they do something that causes pain, even just a little bit, make a high pitched yelp noise.
-Don't hurt your dog intentionally in any way. I'm serious here, all that does is lower trust and potentially escalate aggression. SHOCK COLLARS ARE INCLUDED IN THIS
-Do encourage good behavior. Training treats! Kind words and pats, they understand simple gestures like these, but mostly treats
-Be consistent! If yesterday the dog was tearing up a pillow and you yelled at them, don't let them get away with it today. Use the same commands (example, saying "paw" and then "shake" and expecting them to know they're the same thing)
-Teach them the word no. This plays into a lot of the other tips. When your dog does something bad, say no and squirt them with a spray bottle of water. The response has to be as fast as possible. If there isn't a spray bottle nearby, just say 'no' and try to have it ready for next time, don't go and get it the dog will be super confused on why they're getting sprayed a minute later
-They're a living being! Don't get mad if they don't do exactly what you want. Like if they don't want to cuddle right now don't force it on them!
-treat them with the basic decency of a human child, such as feeding them on time, listening when they are whining in pain, and for christ sake they need to live inside. If you can't keep your dog inside you should not get a dog.
These are the absolute basics, if you "don't have time" to teach your dog these. You don't have time to have a dog.
Tl;dr: do full research before getting a dog, talk to whoever you get them from (no puppy farms or stores, adopt from a shelter or an accredited breeder) understand a dog is an active, living being with their own thoughts and emotions. Research research research! Even if you've had dogs before, you can always learn something new!
