You may find a view very much like this one taken in 1895 when walking the trails of Bartram's Garden today. Bartram's Garden is a National Historic Landmark in Philadelphia that includes the house and gardens of John Bartram, who was born on this day in 1699. He was a Quaker, explorer, co-founder of the American Philosophical Society, and considered the Father of American Botany. His exploration, specimen collecting, and writings about the American landscape were very influential among English botanists as their first introduction to new plant varieties from the colonies. HSP's Bartram Family Collection contains journals, correspondence, and other documents from several generations of the family.

Philadelphia has been experiencing some true Spring weather and it beckons us outdoors to take in the sunshine and blooms after a shower. The two ladies pictured here by Marriott C. Morris know what we are talking about as they sit on a fence in Bartram’s Gardens in April 1888.

In Bartrams Garden there was a medicinal plant garden. They used medicinal period plants to show what plants might have been utilizedam at that time. The flowering tobacco (nicotiana sylvestris) silently swayed in the light breeze, ensuring that we noticed her. A sunflower sprawled on any plant within reach, as its blooms looked up to the heavens. Do you ever see symbols in the garden? These gates at Bartrams garden were simply beautiful. Kirk Brown pointed out to me that these patterns were meaningful. I captured a picture of them so I could find out what they meant. History - in homes and gardens - hold stories...like seeds. Once uncovered, it is up to us whether to do the research (fertilize the thought) or let it sit, dry out and crumble.
