San Sebastian Of The Cross Castle’s Bartizans During the XVII and XVIII centuries, the Spanish Crown was worried for the safety of their colonies in the new continent. The hispanic government not only had forts, stockades and castles built, but also realized that given enough time, they had to be improved or repaired. So in 1761, the militar engineer Juan Garland was commissioned by His Majesty and the Viceroyalty, to consolidate and intervine the existing infrastructure in the Captaincy General of Chile- specifically, the Corral Bay and Valdivia’s defense system. Through Garland’s instruction, the ~ 90 meters Curtain Wall was constructed, and with it, three beautiful Bartizans. These bartizans or “guerite”, are a type of turrets projecting from the wall, and had the function of enabling the military to fully see and appreciate their surroundings, while at the same time, protecting them from enemy fire.
