Rubinho Barsotti, founder and drummer of Zimbo Trio, died at dawn on Wednesday, April 15, at 87, in São Paulo. The musician died of complications from surgery he had on his femur last week. His body was buried at 9:00am in the Araçá Cemetery in São Paulo. Considered one of the greatest drummers in Brazil, Rubinho joined pianist Amilton Godoy and bassist Luís Chaves (who died in 2007) to form Zimbo Trio in 1964. From 1965 to 1967, they were the house band for television program, "O Fino da Bossa", on TV Record (Brazilian television network), presented by Elis Regina and Jair Rodrigues. Throughout their career the trio created new rhythmic and harmonic concepts in Brazilian music. They also performed alongside jazz greats such as Stan Getz, Gato Barbieri, Kenny Dorham, Oscar Peterson, Tommy Flanagan, Sonny Stitt, and Joe Pass. In a Facebook post, Amilton Godoy lamented the loss of his friend: "I am very sad about the death of my friend Rubinho Barsotti. It was 49 years of work with Zimbo Trio where we founded Clam - Music School together and we still recorded 51 albums together! There are many stories and achievements that we share together. For me, Rubinho has always been the best drummer of his generation. Rest in peace, my friend!"
