Where is Barrett now?! After 36 hours in NYC I’m down in Alabama to see my brother and sister, and to go to #HangoutFest. After hearing about everything that happened with the abortion ban down here I had mixed feelings about coming. However family comes first for me so I came down here, and looked at this as an opportunity to talk to people I would normally not mingle with. It’s been an incredible experience to wake up at the beach, hangout on the coast of America with my brother and his friends, and get to have mindful conversations with them. Ignoring something doesn’t make the problem go away, and as I’ve learned while being here, many Alabamians do not agree with this ridiculous ban. As a resident of a huge city like NYC it’s easy to get stuck in our bubbles, but the only way real change is going to happen is if we do mix and mingle with those who are different than us. To see thousands of people cheer as the musical guests speak against the #abortion ban has been a soul lifting experience, and has reminded me how important it is to go experience different places first hand. I never in a million years thought I’d “go home” to Mobile, Alabama, but this is where my family moved to. I get it. The weathers amazing, you’re on the gulf coast of Mexico, the beaches are beautiful, it’s cheap, and there are some lovely humans down here. There still is a lot of progress to be made, but it isn’t going to happen without new minds traveling down here. If you haven’t been to this part of the world then I encourage you to maybe think about adding somewhere like Orange Beach to your travel destinations because we can’t keep avoiding each other. Plus it’s actually beautiful!
