its also like. the fact that the baron just. was fine with rosamund not giving her name- or, well. not fine because it clearly did bug him but he went with it (and i do think this whole bit was just. miscommunication and not rosamund genuinely being like "NO you can't know my name" bc she gives it later on). but like. there's just something about that. that compels me.

tragic backstory but moreso than that, the baron has clearly never made any progress towards healing from the loss of his brothers
he's lonely. this man lives completely alone, and accepted a marriage proposal without thinking it through. he didn't even know rosamund's name and was all like "yes let's get married." no matter how you slice it, that's....desperate.
has a very gentlemanly way of talking and obviously. brennan's voice was sexy
he just had these really pathetic and sad vibes. like for all his wealth and power he can't make himself happy (ie the bit about souless luxury). elicits a lot of "i can fix him" emotion in others
feel free to add more but like. the appeal of the baron is how much of a hot mess he is behind this stoic and gentlemanly facade. and like, i understand Why He's A Villian and that what he's doing is Wrong, however. that doesn't mean he can't be compelling too.
