survivor's guilt
banjee cares. he cares a lot. it's his way of repaying for major wheeler's kindness in the swamp realm (can you believe that's actually vert's dad?).
the major had his share of drivers employed by the silencerz at that point, but only at banjee's behest did they start rescuing the lost. dan dresden (now angling for the major's position), alec wood (the only sane man), vert wheeler (and how lucky he was).
in such a dreary environment, banjee is the life and soul of the silencerz. his humor (and alec too, probably, though banjee will never admit that) is the one thing that's preventing vert from knocking out jack and running back for the teku.
which is why kadeem hurts. and why mark hurts.
so. damn. much.
because he could've saved them.
kadeem was flying down the middle of the storm realm. banjee wasn't there, and the silencerz had no ability to take him back, but maybe, maybe, maybe.
but mark stings so much more, because he was there, damn it! he could've gone in and got mark were it not for that sweeper. and dan tells him that he's fine, they got the accelecharger (what really matters to them), mark is alive, it's fine.
banjee knows that's a lie.
