Teenage Fanclub - Bandwagonesque (1991)
On this day—November 19th, 1991—Bandwagonesque, the third studio album by Teenage Fanclub, was released in the US. Largely unknown when it was released, the album brought the band significant success in the States with two songs—“What You Do to Me” and “The Concept”—charting in the top 20 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart. When it was infamously voted album of the year by Spin magazine (the album wasn’t officially released yet when the issue came out)—over Nirvana’s Nevermind and R.E.M.’s Out of Time—the album and the magazine both suffered considerable criticism due to the negative backlash. However, the album is now acclaimed as one of the best of the 90s and one of the best works by the stalwart Scottish band. In 2017, Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie, released his version of Bandwagonesque, covering the album in its entirety, noting that it was "[his] favorite record by [his] favorite band of all time."

Teenage Fanclub’s 3rd studio album was released on 19 November 1991.
Heavily influenced by Big Star, Bandwagonesque was a commercial and critical success, with Spin magazine naming it Album of the Year (ahead of Nirvana’s Nevermind).
“Has it stood the test of time? I suppose the best you can say as a musician is, if you don’t cringe too much when you listen back to it, then you’ve kind of done OK.”
- Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub on the band’s album, ‘Bandwagonesque’
