Jennifer Homans, Apollo's Angels: A History of Ballet
nutcracker in less than 2 weeks
am i ready? no
is our choreo looking good? also no
wait INCREDIBLY funny that as soon as the big gnarly bruise on my left hamstring healed i pulled my groin in the other side and now have 2 bruise 2 furious on my right leg
def not as bad as the other one but it's lowkey a localized hard raised lump in my thigh where i guess my muscle is bleeding out into my fascia. i mean my ENTIRE left thigh was turgid like that last time so this is way more bearable lol. WELL! anyways. that's fun! not really surprising bc i'm guessing i fucked up my left side first and because i just kept dancing through it the rest of my body tried to compensate and got fucked in the process. but NOW once they're BOTH healed i will be Unstoppable for real. my plan to just break my body and then instantly have my full extensions back as soon as i heal is going exactly as i laid out :3

wait i forgot to mention today's ballet class was good my extensions are MUCH better now that my leg muscles aren't torn to shreds and bleeding internally but more importantly my instructor said one (1) tiny thing that like. FULLY changed how i thought about and approached pirouettes and just like immediately completely fixed all the problems i was having with that single sentence???? i don't think it's a thing ANY teacher has ever framed in that way for me in the like decade i spent dancing preprofessionally???? and back then i had okay pirouettes and could do 32 fouettes and stuff but i remember it was a NIGHTMARE and a huge struggle for me to get to that point and it's just wild to me that sometimes a teacher will just explain something in a slightly different way and it will unlock something in your brain and everything just clicks and works. WILD. anyways they're still not perfect yet bc my ankles are still fucked up and by that point toward the end of class i was in so much pain i couldn't really stay in a proper high demipointe releve and just kept buckling at the end. but once i fix my inflamed ankle tendons i my pirouettes are gonna be fucking perfect i swear to god
3:30am can't sleep thinking about taking a NON-ballet dance class this week… everyone gasped! shock and horror! surely i will embarrass myself bc back when i was actually A Dancer every time i tried to do anything remotely Cool i looked so obviously like a ballet dancer out of my element but whatever maybe it will be fun to take a hip hop or jazz class again maybe i'll just naturally be less awkward on account of no longer being 17 and uncomfortable in my body. i mean of course i do have ballet tomorrow but like. what if i took more class what if i did class every day this week in a desperate bid to stave off the death drive
ok rambling about my life and ballet and other stuff again bc i'm having A Day today lol
it really is such a mindfuck simultaneously going back to ballet class (which is a thing that is physically excruciating and exhausting but something i am so solidly confident in that it feels like coming home and i have never felt anything but pure joy like massive endorphin rush after class even as my body has been screaming at me and quite literally bleeding profusely internally) and then also at the same time taking lessons in [redacted] that i am a complete beginner in and have ZERO confidence in, like truly paralyzing levels of fear of even doing anything at all in front of my instructor even when i'm actually doing it Correctly, to the point where i come home and immediately crash and feel so so embarrassed and mortified that i am even trying this new thing and wondering why i'm even doing it at all and feeling like i need to kill myself immediately because i'm just filled with an overwhelming sense of existential dread for no reason
it's just WILD how differently my brain reacts to those two things, just like i think on a chemical level the contrast between the endorphin/dopamine/whatever neurotransmitter rush that i get from ballet vs the adrenaline rush fear response i get from Doing A Thing That Is New To Me. idk why it's so scary. i guess it's in some ways exposure therapy and putting myself in Situations on purpose to build up my tolerance for discomfort and public embarrassment which regardless of whether or not i will ever actually use [redacted] in my life or ever actually be good at it, that muscle for Being Uncomfortable and Being Bad At Something is def something i need to learn to be okay with
i'm also realizing that i haven't REALLY been a total beginner at anything since i was a kid and when i was a kid i was terrified of being bad at something bc i would face very real consequences and abuse for Not Being Good so like. yeah i guess it does make sense that the overwhelming total body fear and shame of being observed doing something i'm Not Good at would make me emotionally crash and want to kill myself over truly nothing. over a genuinely good lesson where i made progress and my instructor was super helpful and supportive. so i guess if nothing else i'm just teaching myself that i'm an adult it's Fine and i can do this and no one will yell at me or hit me in the face or torture me emotionally for hours or whatever even if i do Bad at something lmfao. my god what a mess
WHATEVER i have ballet class on monday and everything will be fine again. there are so many things i need to improve in ballet class but the thing is i know exactly what those things are and how to achieve them and what i need to work on and that's so so so comforting and grounding. save me ballet class. ballet class save me.
