So y'all were excited to see me attampt a Briar Rose Falling cake. However in light of world events my mother decided to revise her Birthday theme to Flamingos. This is the cake that resulted
our starting point. 5 x 6in pink colored whitecake + 2x 8in yellowcake
Our filling is sliced strawberries in a homemade stawberry glaze contained by a baked meringue ring. (while I did learn to make baked meringue for this cake THIS was actually a 2ndary bonus usage I had not originally planned)
5 layers of cake, 4 layers of meringue and strawberry filling... a fine start
WHipped cream frosting in fab flamingo for the top tier
"Make it Blue" for our bottom tier. Whipped frosting isn't the smoothest but man does it taste nice.
What says 50yrs better than gold?
My fuck momement. YOU see I actually learned to make meringue for the decorations, namely the head and wings of the flamingo. However at 1am the night before the party I found all four of the heads (and only the heads) had been utterly shattered....so into the bin they went and into high gear went my ass
Also it was still like 85 degrees OUTSIDE let alone my kitchen when I had to fire the oven up again for Plan B. I have a whole new respect for the bakers on Great British Bake Off
Plan b heads. Was banking on the white beaks but made a couple extras JiC I left my 2 sided Ideal head like this overnight to dry glued together with icing
given the filling and making the night before I took this picture as proof "I tried" in case everything slid/collaped in the night)
50 and feeling fine (ANd yes sticking a knife in this at the end was soooo satisfying)
The candles were less than co-operative.Thanks for being such a trooper and Happy Birthday Mommy
