When Louis Cartier set his sights on the Russian market, he knew he could count on her - one of his wealthiest and loyal clients, the formidable Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna of Russia (the Elder), also known as Grand Duchess Vladimir, was born Duchess Marie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin.

So passionate was she about collecting jewels — many of which are now part of the British royal collection — that she soon became one of Cartier’s best clients. 

So much so that she formed a genuine friendship with Louis Cartier. Through her influence — and her celebrated Christmas bazaar in St Petersburg — Cartier entered the highest circles of Russian society, ultimately becoming one of the jewellers of choice of the Romanovs, then the wealthiest dynasty in the world.

To thank the Grand Duchess for her years of support and patronage, Louis Cartier personally conceived, in 1912, a watch case built around two straight parallel lines curving into connected brackets, its soft silhouette evoking the shape of a bathtub — or baignoire in French. Louis offered the piece to the Duchess, but the very first model has since been lost.

In the 1950s, Cartier relaunched the oval-dial watch, which quickly became a favorite among some of the era’s most stylish and influential women, including Catherine Deneuve and Romy Schneider.
