Yes ScarJo is a bad actor, we all know this, but what I REALLY think about that one scene from the Marriage Story everyone’s posting about is that it’s a sign of a bad director. I’ve seen fantastic actors give terrible performances because of the direction they received and had to follow. The director is the guiding hand and captain of the ship. Any director in their right mind would have seen that scene played out and told the actors to scale it back and find the levels, find the rises and falls of the scene and where volume is effective and where it’s not. What emotions other than “anger” build an argument and how to express all of that while still being in control of self. How to make a fight seem realistic and not like two actors acting out a fight scene. I mean nothing can fix ScarJo’s lack of talent but that scene needed some direction that it’s clearly lacking
