I've been using my The North Face Back to Berkeley boots all winter. I came across them at the TNF shop in Melbourne, but decided I could wait until I was back in Canada to pick up a pair... hardly. I landed in Vancouver and had a 8 hour layover until Calgary, so I marched right to the TNF shop on Granville St. and wore them out of the store.Â
 While I was in Europe and Scandinavia the boot was my go-to for everything. From all-day use pounding the pavement to quick runs to the supermarket, I didn't touch my trainers at all. So impressed with the versatility, I was, that when I had to make an unexpected trip home, I left my dress boots and returned with only my Back to Berkeley boots.
These boots have gotten lots of attention from passers-by, and earned the admiration of my peers. They look great, but when you put them on you see what a gifted technical shoe this really is.
As much support, grip and durability as a hiker. Insulated to keep your feet warm while others are shakin' in their boots. The boots are ultralight and had an athletic fit. I also love how casual they can be, with the large tongue and clean lines all around, they're a real fashion statement on function.Â
And function they do. While these boots proved themselves on the cold streets from Zurich to Helsinki, we drove deep into the Maclean Creek on a thawing spring day to see how they handled off-road.Â
The traction kept me upright on steep-grade snow and mud. The tread pattern really seemed to shine while I was hopping rock to rock in the slick frosty creek beds.Â
I hope that this 'Back to Berkeley' line continues for TNF as I'd be really excited to see whats available if these ever need replacing. When The North Face connects with their roots it makes me forget about the latest ultralight technical gear, and reminds me of the simple pleasure of the unknown. It's this type of gear that will be sought after 30 years from now, like vintage TNF products made in the USA.
