BREAKING BACKING BANDS WEEK!
The Ikettes - I'm Blue (The Gong Gong Song)
The Ikettes (which ones in particular is anyone's guess), had a handful of their own releases in the 60s and 70s, but probably the most familiar-sounding one is this song, sampled for Salt-n-Pepa's Shoop.

The Ikettes
So, I had a hard time coping with how many Raelettes there were, but that number is blown out of the water by the Ikettes! Ike (and, for a time, Tina) Turner's backing group has rotated through almost fifty members in their long and complicated history. Or maybe more, I gave up counting them on the wiki page.

Wendy & Lisa - Lolly Lolly
I had to add another Wendy & Lisa song, because this is the most perfect specimen of an 80s pop video you will ever see.

Wendy & Lisa
Wendy and Lisa were part of the Revolution, one of Prince's first backing bands in the 80s. Some sort of tiff ensued, and Wendy and Lisa peeled off to form their own power-pop duo.
Coincidentally, Prince unveiled a new all-female backing band earlier this year. I wouldn't count on that lasting long though, his frequently changing associations are so notorious they have their own TV Tropes entry!
I should also point out that I strongly identify with Wendy playing guitar on the sofa in her bra in the above video.

BREAKOUT BACKING BANDS WEEK!
Mahotella Queens
The Mahotella Queens were originally formed in the 60s as session singers for South African label Gallo Records. They were often paired with Simon Mahlathini, who had perhaps the greatest nickname in music: "King of the Groaners."
They also branched out into their own material, and continue recording to this day, though his royal groaniness has sadly passed. Also, in a slightly meta touch, these backing girls have always had their very own backing band, the Makgona Tshole Band!

The Raelettes
Formed as the backing group for Ray Charles, with an ever-changing line-up, The Raelettes released a handful of singles on their own. Alums include Minni Riperton and a load of people I've never heard of.
