In the real world, stories donāt really have defined endings very often.Ā The plucky jockey and horse who win the Kentucky Derby out of nowhere might then go on to have a brief career without any further showings of note, retire, get separated from his horse, work on a farm to make ends meet, meet a nice girl, start a family, and die unexpectedly of a heart attack at age 52.Ā The story of his derby run ends in victory, but itās just part of the larger story of his life; his story entangles itself with so many others--his wife, his children, his horse, his friends--that even when he dies, his story isnāt really over.Ā His children carry on his story without him, and their children after them, and their childrensā children go on to become prizewinning astrophysicists or some such.Ā Itās true that stories donāt really end so much as people just stop talking about them, but when youāre telling a fictional story, one meant to entertain, itās kind of pretentious and unfun to go āwell, this story is going to end in an anticlimax because sometimes that happens in the real world, and Iām throwing out any kind of payoff or interesting result the story could have had!āĀ The main series of Baccano was quite a good story!Ā It had real payoffs, real stakes, real interesting plotlines woven throughout it.Ā But the OVAs?Ā The story of Graham Specter?Ā Pointless.Ā Just pointless.Ā There was some good character work from the other cast members, but...god, I hate Graham so much.
So in professional wrestling, there are āfacesā and āheelsā--roughly, protagonists and antagonists.Ā The faces are there to draw cheers from the crowd, and the heels are there to be villains--menacing or cowardly, theyāre meant to be foils to the faces, and draw boos from the crowd.
Trouble is, there are two kinds of heels.Ā The first kind of heel is a great villain--someone you enjoy seeing so you can cheer for the other guy, someone whoās a great performer and fun to hate.Ā The second kind of heel is just incredibly annoying.Ā Theyāre not fun.Ā Theyāre not funny.Ā Theyāre not menacing.Ā Theyāre just a chore to watch, and you dread them coming on screen.
Anyways, this is a long way for me to say that Graham is the Baron Corbin of Baccano.
And thatās...the show.
Well!Ā That was a nice final palate cleanser, at least!Ā I love Isaac and Miria so goddamn much.Ā Best characters in the show by a country mile.Ā An absolute blessing.Ā My skin is clear.Ā My crops are watered.Ā Life is good with them on screen.
Graham Specter?Ā Not so much.
Graham was aggravating, annoying, pompous, and taken more seriously by the narrative than he deserved.Ā Heās just...lame.Ā And at the very least I was expecting him to get a final showdown and get the shit kicked out of him, but then he goes and pulls the worst narrative move Iāve seen in fiction in a very long time and just.Ā Shaggy Dogs his way out of the story?Ā It was such an anticlimax!Ā It was horrible!Ā No payoffs, no fight, no catharsis, no satisfying conclusion, just Graham walking away and the writers using their mouthpieces to tell us how much better that is than letting us get a real climax.Ā I hated the OVAs.Ā They didnāt ruin the show for me, of course, theyāre an entirely separate thing, but a large portion of the OVAs just straight-up sucked.Ā Which is a shame, they could have done so much more with the characters.
Ah well.
That is it for Baccano, for good this time!Ā Show completed!Ā A very good show overall, and Isaac and Miria were an absolute treat every moment they were on screen.Ā Love those two.Ā I do recommend watching the main series at least!Ā Though if youāre reading this you almost certainly have already yourself.
