Everyone remembers the opening of Spaceman. Almost nobody remembers what came next.
Released in 1996 after its iconic Levi's advert, Babylon Zoo's debut single became one of the fastest-selling debut singles in British chart history. Beneath its unforgettable chorus, however, lies a striking vision of the world: home has become unbearable, God appears absent, humanity is trapped, and salvation lies somewhere beyond the horizon.
In this video, I examine the lyrics, symbolism, music video, and theology behind Spaceman, asking a simple question:
What kind of gospel is this song actually preaching?
Rather than treating popular music as disposable entertainment, I explore how songs shape the imagination long before we consciously analyse them, and how Spaceman reflects a growing cultural desire not to redeem the world—but to escape it.
From the "Intergalactic Christ" to media, technology, alienation, and the longing to become something other than human, this is the first in a series exploring influential songs through the lens of biblical and Christian theology.
I've been quite excited about publishing this chapter. When trying to put everything together in some sort of engaging coherence, it's not easy to start at the climax of the story. I wanted to start at the beginning. And now it feels like every day is a new and baffling realisation that the lyrics from #Spaceman were not heeded by people who knew better. The great wide world is indeed tampered by fascist votes and homophobic jokes. When I was 14, I did not expect this to be the world I would find myself in 30 years later. In any case, I am still happy to celebrate this artist and his music through my writing. I hope you enjoy.
Some of the Arthur Baker remixes of "Spaceman" had some interesting takes on the lyrics. Most of these were created and released under WEA, where it would be heard by BBH who made the 'Planet' advert for women's Levi's jeans. Read all about it at MUGGED BY GOD!
