The baby was asleep.

Which, in itself, was a miracle.

The living room was quiet except for the soft hum of the heater and the rhythmic creak of the rocking chair. Outside, Springrock’s twin moons spilled silver light through the window.

And in that chair, Albus York held his child like she was the whole damn universe.

She was wrapped in one of Faithful’s old shawls, the one that smelled like safety and wild herbs, her little fist resting on Albus’s chest. Her hair—just a thin layer of fluff right now—was the same color as Faithful’s. Her nose looked like his, though. He was almost mad about it. She deserved better than his crooked features. But somehow, on her, everything was perfect.

Albus stared, unblinking, his big calloused hand cupping the back of her tiny head.

She was so small.

Too small.

So fragile it made his throat ache.

He leaned forward and kissed her forehead.

“I’d burn every goddamn planet for you,” he whispered. “Even if you just screamed in my ear for four hours. I’d still level a city if it meant you’d smile.”

Behind him, soft footsteps padded across the floor.

Faithful leaned over the back of the chair, resting her chin on his shoulder. She smelled like sleep and mint tea, her hair loose from the braid.

“She’s got your scowl,” she murmured against his ear.

“She’s a baby. Babies don’t scowl.”

“She does. You put her down and she gives the exact same look you give me when I hide your whiskey.”

Albus huffed a laugh. “Good. She’s gonna be terrifying. Just like you.”

Faithful hummed. “Hope she’s got your heart.”

Albus turned slightly, enough to meet her eyes. They were tired, but soft. So incredibly soft. He’d never seen her like this, not even with Kerano. This was a different kind of peace.

“Never thought I’d have this,” he said, voice hoarse.

Faithful reached down and touched his cheek. “Me neither.”

She came around the chair and curled into his side, her hand joining his on their daughter’s back. The baby made a little snuffling noise and sighed, sinking deeper into her sleep.

Faithful smiled. “You should sleep too.”

“I will,” Albus said. “Later. I just… wanna look a little longer.”

And so he did.

He sat there in the quiet glow of the room, heart full, holding something so pure it almost hurt.

A man like him didn’t deserve heaven.
