I really liked plenary today. It was the most insightful plenary that we had. I really enjoyed that we really interacted with the mentors. I think their mini skits were very powerful. I really liked hearing the opinions of all the other girls at drc because it made me really feel like i was part of a diverse community of girls who shared similar experiences. I almost started crying when we were discussing loving our bodies because that is something that I have struggled with my whole life. I still can't say that I love my body, but seeing other girls' stories of how they over came disliking their bodies made me realize that maybe one day i will be able to love my body one day too.

I was disgusted by the man in this video. He constantly was saying that women should be complimented for something that is actually considered sexual harassment. According to him women should be thankful that men are catcalling them because it is men being nice. However, his logic is very problematic because it implies that all women dress for men and that all we want is for men to compliment us. Also he clearly, just like many other men, do not know the difference between a compliment and sexual harassment which is very worrisome. Objectifying a woman while she is walking down the street and yelling something sexual at her is not a compliment, no matter how attractive the objectifyer is. The man in this video argued that if the guys who were catcalling were attractive then women would not mind. This is very inaccurate. If someone is making me uncomfortable because of their catcalls, I will not feel any better based on how attractive they are. Lastly, he also said that the woman could always move out of New York if she does not like it. He was essentially blaming her for living in New York and feeling uncomfortable when dealing with sexual harassment on the street rather than blaming the men who make her uncomfortable. This man unfortunately shows the logic that many other men use when explaining catcalling. He shows that boys need to be taught from a young age what is and what is not acceptable to say and to whom.

August - what is the worst thing you’ve ever experienced?
Well ever since maybe middle school and up until I got accepted into my PhD program in February this year my mom has never really been particularly nice to me, and not at all proud. Every car ride with her would just be an endless list of all the reasons why I'm a failure (among them not going to an Ivy League school. Stupid, right?). Up until a few months ago, she never said good night, good morning, I love you, I'm proud of you, etc etc. 90% of her interactions with me would be her yelling at me. Everything she needed to do for me, including taking me to the doctor, was a burden and she'd say it to my face. I'm not sure if it was emotional abuse but it sure felt like it. And then I got accepted into grad school and it was a complete 180 change. Like a few weeks ago when I was recovering from surgery she patted my back and said "poor baby" and I almost burst into tears because I'm pretty sure that was the first time she touched me like that in maybe 12 years.

1. I just ate Chinese food for dinner. Beef lo mein and some wantons, in case you were wondering. My tummy is round and happy now. :)
2. I AM SO EXCITED FOR THE YJ EXCHANGE. All I want to do is post excerpts because I want to share, but that would sorta defeat the anonymous portion of the exchange.
3. I spent last night with my best friends from college. One of my friends, Julia, was in a production at her grad school and she was fucking amazing and I am so proud of her. Seriously, so proud. And it was a great night full of friendship and pride and food.
4. I can and will eat candy until my tongue starts to bleed. Don’t think I won’t.
5. I like to think that when you pass away, you do move on. I don’t know if it’s a heaven or what it is, but I like to think that you possess omnipresent knowledge. Like, you get clarity about what happened in your life or why certain things never worked out, that sort of thing. Also, world mysteries would be solved. You would finally learn what happened to Amelia Earhart, who really kidnapped the Lindbergh baby, who killed Lizzie Bordon’s parents and why… Those sorts of mysteries that I have always been interested in, I would finally know the truth.
