Law grew up studying scientifically backed medicine since he could speak— he’d learned exactly what medicine could help people and how to make it from legitimate compounds and chemicals, tiring himself out every day when he was younger so he could help people modern day.
He kept this science close to his heart until his crew got heavily injured at the last island they were at, and they had no choice but to stumble onto the closest island, which is where you lived.
From a holistic village, you grew up healing with plants— you went through a lot of the same “studying” of anatomy, organs, and tissue— but your healing was… different. You were regarded as a healer in your community through a more almost… spiritual means. Your community swore you had a way with plants and the way they connected to people, the elders regarded you as a savior, a prodigy.
And although he scoffed when he saw you patch one of his teammates up with a bind made out of leaves and sap (law himself wasn’t able to help them at the moment.), he couldn’t deny that it made something in him curious seeing you work.
You seemed passionate about what you were doing, he would leave the heart pirates cabin for walks in the morning and would always glance over at you tending to the plants and animals— he could respect the dedication. And that your medicine has seemed to work for him and his crew. And your voice. And how pretty you were.
After a month of pretending like he didn’t think this medicine you used was fascinating, he asked you about it.
“You use… bay leaves when you heal people?” He said as he sat next to you, you reading up on a recent study.
You tilted your head, turning to look at him. “You want to know more about my medicine?” You said, smiling up at him. “Really?”
“…yeah.” He said after a beat, looking over at the book you were writing in. “I was judgmental earlier. That wasn’t— that wasn’t right. I want to know more.”
“I appreciate the apology.” You said softly, your hands tracing the paper on your page. “Do you want me to start anywhere specific?”
“What did you use in the medicine you gave my crew?” He said, already seeing your face light up at his words.
“Well, I just used a mix of orégano, yarrow, and comfrey in a paste i made a couple days ago and sealed it with a bandage made from sage and tree sap, I could’ve added lavender but i didn’t know if your crewmate had sensitive skin and—.” You said, glancing down at your book as you rambled.
The way you spoke so passionately made him a bit flustered, and then when you eventually looked up at him with those bright eyes, his breath hitched a bit.
“S-sorry, I know I’m talking a lot, my peers always tell me—“ you said as you glanced away, your face flushed.
He would kill your peers if you asked him to.
Well not kill, but, hurt. a lot.
“No, not at all.” He said, his voice soft as he rubbed the back of his neck. “I just…” say anything, anything to keep her going, god, if you make her sad—
“I’m a bit perplexed at how you source all this stuff in the first place.”
Your eyes lit up, a wide smile coming into your face. “D’ya want me to show you?”
He swallowed, overwhelmed by how cute you looked. If this was how he would learn herbal medicine, he couldn’t even be mad about it.
“I would appreciate it.”
You stood up, stretching your hand out for him.
He looked at it for a beat too long, noticing the slight callouses on your fingers, the dirt in your nails, and then glancing up at your face— you looked magical. Was this real?
He took your hand as he stood up. You noticed that his hands were shaking slightly.
“Are you nervous?” You asked, peering up at him.
“N-no, I just don’t usually… do much of the physical affection thing” he muttered.
“Oh, sorry, I can—“ you said as you started to pull your hand away, him instinctively moving to hold onto it again.
“Don’t. It’s nice.” He said, making you smile. He more obvious with his emotions than he thought.
You walked him through the villages garden, showing him how every tool worked and what each plant did, although it was difficult for him to focus when you looked at him like he was the sun himself.
If only he knew how long you’d been waiting to pour your heart out. The people in your practice regarded you akin to a nepo baby.
Which you had to go back to that night law after and his crew supposedly went to sleep. You were discussing plans for the next day with one of your peers, Madeline, as you stood in front of the pirates cabin, looking over at your herbs.
“So I was thinking for tomorrow we harvest the sage, and—“
“Won’t the mint be ready?”
“It should be, but the mint doesn’t seem ready to harvest, something in it is telling me it needs more time.”
“Yeah, and we’ll all listen to you because you get some freak visions.”
“They’re not—“
“They are!” She chuckled, her brown hair swaying as her head moved down, laughing. “They so are. Makes me wanna puke every time I listen to you.”
“…is that true?” You asked softly, peering over at her.
“Of course it is. Everyone else feels the same way, I mean— it’s not like you actually worked to get here, right?”
“…yeah. Right.” You muttered, swallowing.
Your elders were long gone by now. You still prayed to them that night though, asking for people to trust you a bit more. You didn’t understand why they hated you so much for something that wasn’t even your fault. You didn’t ask for your gift— you don’t even remember when you got it, or even asking for it in the first place.
Maybe if they saw the scabs and cuts you got from having to fight animals off of your plants, maybe if they saw the dirt that you had to personally curate for every single plant, maybe if they lived through the sleep deprivation you put yourself through— but they never would.
Despite it all, you still woke up the next morning early as you always did, tending to your personal plants. You noticed that your thyme seemed a bit down— it always got affected by your emotions, so you tried your best to be happier that morning, imagining yourself teaching a class of students, all asking questions, wanting to hear you talk. They were all growing their own plants, each flourishing under your watch.
You eventually brought breakfast to the heart pirates cabin, gently knocking on their door.
Bepo opened the door, smiling down at you as always. “I can help with that!” He said, taking one of the pots from your cart and moving to set it down at a table you’d set up a couple weeks ago— it was a routine for you by now.
You stayed there for a couple minutes after, making sure everyone was satisfied with how everything was made before you started to leave.
“Do they always talk to you like that?” You heard a voice say as you walked over to the nearby flower field, sitting in front of the roses.
You looked over your shoulder, the sight of law making you smile. “Like what?” You said, shaking your head as you squinted your eyes. You didn’t even have to ask who the ‘they’ was. You just realized he wasn’t yet asleep last night when you were talking with your peer.
“Like you’re stupid.” He said bluntly, crossing his arms as he sat next to you. “You know more than they do. That girl with the brown hair almost used poison ivy on one of my crew members.”
“Are you serious?” You huffed out, your eyebrows furrowed as you looked up at him, met with a nod.
“So don’t let them get you upset. They don’t know anything.”
You picked a pink rose, avoiding its thorns as to not prick yourself. “…it’s hard.” You muttered, looking down at the petals. “I’m surrounded by them all the time. I don’t— I don’t hear anyone else’s opinions often enough for theirs to not matter.”
“So listen to me more.” He said as he gently took the rose from you, picking off its thorns. “I like talking to you anyways.”
Your face got warm as you smiled, shaking your head. “You don’t have to say that.” You muttered, looking to the side.
“It’s true.” He said softly, handing you the flower. “You thought I was just asking you questions for no reason?”
“I thought you were asking them for medical knowledge.” You teased, smiling up at him as you took the flower, your fingertips brushing up against his.
“Y-yeah, but it was also because the medical knowledge was coming from you.” He said, the tips of his ears flushed.
“You’re flirting with me.” You said bluntly.
“A bit.”
“I like it.”
“You do?”
“I do. I’m quite fond of you.” Although your words were forward, your voice was softened as you looked up at him, twirling the rose in your hand.
He paused for a second, glancing away, and you thought you’d made a mistake— your heart already heavy in your chest. Your thyme was gonna die at this rate, fuck.
“I feel the same.” He said, his voice quiet as he glanced down, his hands in the grass below him.
“Really?!” You said, smiling as you snapped your head to look over at him.
He chuckled, watching as your hands spun the rose you were holding even faster. “Really. Why don’t you keep telling me about these roses for now, though?”
You nodded, starting to ramble on within seconds. He couldn’t be happier. And you noticed it too! He even smiled a couple times.
You were tending to the lily garden later that night with him, asking him about his crew, and eventually he asked you about your peers at the island and how it was growing up with them.
You didn’t know how to tell him that you weren’t from here.
