I am so excited to be able to share some fantastic music with all of you and showcase both homegrown talent and international musicians, well known and lesser known, that I've discovered on my own and with friends, whether it be here in the City or through my travels around the world. So many songs and luckily, lots of time! I'm going to make it a point of featuring at least one artist from my travels on each Playlist, as this is a Tour after all, and to show the beauty of Detouring and the power of sharing music, bringing music back home to share, something which I believe is priceless. Enjoy, my friends!
Coldplay - "Charlie Brown" [Listen]
Light a fire, light a spark, light a fire, a flame in my heart
We'll run wild, we'll be glowing in the dark.
It's no secret that I am a Coldplay fan. I first heard this song during the iTunes Festival last summer when Coldplay first debuted some new material from their upcoming album, Mylo Xyloto. While Coldplay have been criticized by some fans for their departure from their old sound, I think all artists are bound to experiment at some point and are totally free to do so, while still embodying qualities from past songs. From first listen, I knew it was going to be a hit. It's magical. You know it's a Coldplay song. This is one of those songs that embodies so much joy and happiness that there is in life and that feeling of being alive, being reckless and living in the moment with someone special. The video is dazzling, filled with bright colours and people dancing their hearts out in a celebration of being young. I absolutely love this song. This was actually the song I danced to around my kitchen after finding out I'd gotten into grad school! Although the song was not named after the cartoon Charlie Brown, you can't help but imagine Charlie Brown himself dancing along.
Ellie Goulding - "Starry Eyed" [Listen]
Next thing, we're touching, you look at me, it's like you hit me with lightning
Oh and everybody's starry eyed and everybody glows.
I first discovered this lovely Brit singer back in the summer of 2010. Ellie Goulding crossed over the pond and made a big splash in North America this past year. This is yet another love song which describes that starry eyed feeling you get when you're with someone. What I love about this song is how it showcases Ellie's unique, melodic and almost ethereal voice. That, along with the synths, beats and rich harmonies, make for a lush song. There's a certain ease and down to earthness about her when you watch her perform and the stripped down, acoustic version of this song is equally as lovely. Ellie is also a skilled percussionist, something worth noting and fitting for the likes of us four who have imagined the group as a percussion band, and when she's got hold of drumsticks, she bangs that drum like nobody's business, like in her song "Lights." Her album, Bright Lights, is a fab collection of delightful songs about the ups and downs of a relationship.
Ed Sheeran - "Give Me Love" [Listen]
My my, my my, oh give me love.
I stumbled upon this talented, ginger-haired singer a few months ago and was instantly taken with his sweet, acoustic music. Funny enough, Kristin also discovered him recently (we're notorious for being on the same wavelength) and needless to say, we're both fans. Don't get me wrong though, Ed Sheeran's got a bit of edge and swagga, with his beatboxing and rapping taking center stage in some of his songs. I love this song though. It starts off slow, just him and his guitar and slowly builds up, the 'mmm my my, mmm my my give me love' getting louder and louder as he sings his heart out for someone to give him love until finally, he's shouting at the top of his lungs with urgency. You can hear that longing in his voice and it was a song I connected with right away. If you wait about 10 seconds after the song is finished, you'll get to hear "The Parting Glass," a traditional Irish song which reflects Ed's Irish roots.
Kathleen Edwards - "Change the Sheets" [Listen]
Change this feeling under my feet, change the sheets and then change me.
I first learned about this Canadian singer-songwriter thanks to Trevor Howard from the Ghosts of Memphis. He'd been raving about Kathleen's new album, Voyageur, and anytime someone is raving about music, curiousity gets the best of me and I know that it's gotta be worth a listen. So off I went Googling Kathleen Edwards and took a listen to her album. Produced by Bon Iver's Justin Vernon (who also happens to be Kathleen's boyfriend), Voyageur takes you on a journey, a voyage of the complications that can arise in any relationship, the end of one and the beginning of another. It actually fits well with the Tour and the idea of being on a journey. "Change the Sheets" alludes to the ability of being changed by someone as being like changing the sheets of a bed. From the moment the drums and that distinct rockin' guitar riff kick in with Kathleen's sweet vocals laid over the track, you're in for a ride. I'm in agreeance with Trevor that this album, and this song in particular, are perfect for a sunny, afternoon drive in the country.
Gavin Slate - "Falling" [Listen]
Yeah I knew what it was all along, yeah I knew I was falling for you.
I was introduced to Gavin by Kristin who excitedly messaged me one day and suggested I take a listen to his song "Goodnight Lovers, Goodnight Thieves" which she deemed dreamy. Dreamy has been a recurring word throughout the Tour and I knew I had to find out more about Mr. Slate. This fantastic upbeat track conveys that feeling and realization of falling for someone, from losing sleep to singing songs and of course, that undeniable butterfly feeling in one's stomach. I absolutely love the cello line in this song which adds that extra touch and Gavin's warm vocals and harmonies which give you that lighthearted feeling of being in love, and brings a smile to your face.
Canadian Winter - “You Know What You Are" [Listen]
Young man says you are what you eat, old man says you are what you wear.
Watching these guys get in the groove to this song and Kobi dancing on stage last month is the reason why this song is on my Playlist. That and it's got a sick beat. It samples the song “Dancing With the Moonlit Knight" by progressive rock band Genesis. Canadian Winter make great use of the sample, which features a distinctive guitar riff (at the 1:20 mark in the Genesis song) and has a reggae rock sound. Kobi's vocals compliment this beat well as he raps about an encounter between a young man and old man. It's also got a bit of a jazzy sound which you can never go wrong with. I'm looking forward to hearing more from this hip hop group.
City & Colour - “Fragile Bird" [Listen]
She speaks in tongues, her words they come undone, yeah
And with a wayward mind, she struggles through the night.
These guys rock. Led by frontman Dallas Green of rock band Alexisonfire, City & Colour burst onto the music scene with their hit “Save Your Scissors" and have been putting out music and expanding their sound ever since, moving into a fuller, more folksy sound backed by a band. Carly, Kristin and I got to see City & Colour perform at the Festival of Friends (free show!), which was the first time I saw him live. It's rare to find musicians who sound just as good as they do on an album. Dallas Green is no exception, as he maintains a warmth and ease in his voice in each song. "Fragile Bird" starts off with a guitar riff that instantly gets you in the groove, as Dallas sings with feeling about the night terrors and bad memories haunting a loved one and wanting to be there for them, hoping they will get through. It has such a raw feel to it and is one I'm sure everyone can relate to.
DJ Earworm - "Party On The Floor (Capital FM Summertime Ball Mashup)" [Listen]
What are you waiting for, we just wanna see the world fall in love
My universe will never be the same, go hard, go faster, on the floor.
I'm not much of a Top 40 person, but this right here, friends, is my official PARTY JAM. Or, as my friend Nicole would call it, my pump up jam. Not only that, it's also my workout jam, a song I blast in my car with the top down low and can put on any time of the day and dance like nobody's watching. I saw this video on YouTube, and out of curiousity had to check it out. BAM. A brilliant mashup of some of the best Top 40 songs, including LMFAO's ridiculously catchy "Party Rock Anthem", J. Lo's "On The Floor" (hence the name Party On The Floor), The Wanted's "Glad You Came" (which, by the way, was recently featured on Glee). DJ Earworm is known for his killer mashups which are unique due to how he pieces each of these songs together to make a whole new song (and for the accompanying music vid), distinguishing himself from other mashup creators. He most certainly has an ear for picking great songs to mash up. Check out his latest mashup, "United State of Pop 2011 (World Go Boom)", part of his annual United State of Pop mashup series.
Drew Smith - "Smoke & Mirrors" [Listen]
I see fire in your eyes, you can't smoke me out, not this time.
To me, this song describes the smokes and mirrors there are in any relationship, and that feeling of being able to see things so clearly, feeling as if you and the other person are a reflection of one another, until smoke comes and begins to cloud up any notions of a happy relationship and it becomes a mess. Kristin and I first heard Drew Smith at Max Wray's Rent Party last summer. When I first learned that Drew had outsourced his video to India, I was excited to see how the music video captured the message in the song. I'm sure he had the same thoughts as he anxiously awaited to see the final cut. Well, it's definitely something. I suggest you listen to the song first and then watch the video. I love both the simplicity of the song and the video and how these two things are so different, yet so alike. From the beautiful Indian outfits to the traditional dancing, colourful powder thrown in celebration and the portrayal of Hindu deities, I felt proud watching this video which reflects my heritage and for Drew for his success, as is always nice to see from a local musician.
Ray LaMontagne - "Let It Be Me" [Listen]
Thats when you need someone, someone that you can call.
And when all your faith is gone, feels like you can't go on, let it be me.
My friend and fellow YCI volunteer, Duncan, first told me about Ray LaMontagne in Tanzania, as he sat listening to his iPod, refusing to give me any details beyond a name (noting that it was a French name) and the fact that he was AMAZING, a LEGEND. Of course, he eventually gave in and educated me as per a deal we'd made and after listening to some of his tunes, I am officially a fan. He's pretty amazing. This song was one of many recommendations by Duncan and it's become a favourite of mine. I was so taken with Ray's raspy, raw, warm vocals that convey that feeling of wanting to be that person for someone as much as they have been there for you. The simple musical arrangement compliments Ray's voice well and allows it to shine. I would definitely love to see him live; I can almost imagine him performing in a place like Artword Artbar or Homegrown Hamilton, with the lights dimmed low, the audience sitting in silence, taking in the magic of Ray.
Glee Cast - "Without You" (David Guetta feat. Usher cover) [Listen]
I am lost, I am vain, I will never be the same without you.
As Kristin is our resident Gleek, I have admittedly tuned into Glee from time to time to check out the latest with the kids at McKinley High. I also happened to tune into this episode, centered around finding the perfect song for Mr. Schue to sing for his proposal to Emma Pillsbury. But enough about Glee. This song, originally by David Guetta and Usher, caught my ear from the moment I first heard it and after watching Lea Michele's performance of the song on Glee, I was blown away. Her version embodied that feeling of being without and the fear of losing someone and this cover definitely brought out that raw emotion. Lea is a powerhouse; her strong vocals and her ability to bring this club hit down a notch, stripping away everything else to make it a simple ballad, is why I like this song.
Sara London - "Breathe" [Listen]
I'll never leave as we can breathe, I wanna breathe with you, together.
This song caught my ear at Sara's Mulberry Coffeehouse show and I couldn't wait to hear the finished, mastered version. I got my chance after listening to Sara's EP, Breaking Hearts. This song captures that feeling of wanting to be with someone special, so much so that it's as if you're one being, breathing together and being together. It has a simple R&B melody with a tinkle of the piano and strings that allow Sara to show off her soulful voice and belt this song out.
