IT is going to propose ending the contract with the third-party company that provides AV services so that IT can take over AV at the end of the year and my boss is going to try to put me in charge of it and I’m so excited.
Right now I’m going through all their postings to groups to figure out their normal business levels to figure out what we’re going to have to buy and that’s really boring but also super infuriating. Like, they charge a group 50 FUCKING ACTUAL DOLLARS TO PLUG IN A PHONE CORD TO THE CLIENT’S OWN PHONE. Literally less than two minutes of labor and a goddamn Cat3 cable that you can buy at the goddamn dollar store. And their TV rentals, if you rent for two or three days you’ve essentially bought the entire TV. It’s a total racket. Like, I get that they’re a business and need to make money, but there needs to be a line between profit and taking advantage of customers. (Best part about the phone cord is they literally only have to plug in the cord, the actual back-end work is done by the resort. Same with the private network, they charge the group 150 for setup and they literally do NOTHING. ow do that all right now. And it takes less than an hour, so less than $20 to actually set it up.)
I’m super stoked because we’ll be able to under-charge them and provide a very similar experience to the group. And thanks to my theatre experience, we might be able to offer even more services.
The only thing that I’m not very good at is speccing sound equipment. So if anybody has any recommendations for a good workhorse setup, please let me know. (I can provide details on the rooms, just send me a PM)
The other thing I’m curious about is for the few and far between events where we would need a light board, should I go with MagicQ (that I’m familiar with and can easily teach others how to use, may even buy an actual board who knows) or go with an ETC product that is more universally understood.
Really, if anybody has any recommendations on what to buy let me know. I have a very general idea of what we’ll need, I’ll know more once I go through all their past events. I have a few months before the official presentation, so hit me up via PM.
