Pre-Canon, Autistic Mob, Family, Slice of Life. Completed. Rated: G. Word Count: 1978
Pairings: Kageyama Ritsu & KageyamaĀ āMobā Shigeo, KageyamaĀ āMobā Shigeo & his Mother
Trigger Warnings: Cemeteries
āThe cemetery where her father is buried is twenty minutes from their house. Itās nice. Rows of tombstones line prim, neatly constructed brick paths that stretch on for the length of a city block. Theyāre nice, too. She has to pass by the Moriya family grave and a grandmother or two to get to her father, but thatās fine. Comes with the territory of a cemetery, and itād be silly to expect otherwise.
She usually goes alone, but Taro suggests she bring along the boys this time. Itās good for them to go see their grandfatherās grave. Itās nice.

Or: Kageyamas' mother brings her children to visit the family grave.ā
The Importance of Autism and Friendship in Mob Psycho (Body Improvement Club)
Friendship is super important to this series, and I think for autistic people, itās especially important to see a character we feel represented by have these complex and real friendships.
Ā The Body Improvement Club (BIC) is a great group to look at when talking about this. Mob is different, and not just because heās autistic. Heās also different because heās not athletic and canāt do what the other members can do. But in both instances, his differences are neither overlooked or overly focused on. They are just accepted. The BIC never comments on Mobās social difference, and they never make a big deal that he canāt exercise the way they can. And they don't do this out of pity.Ā
So often, Iāve felt my differences have been ignored by other people around me because theyāre too uncomfortable with them to call them out. And Iām sure other autistic people can relate to this, especially some who have gone without a diagnosis or understanding of why they are the way they are. Struggles end up getting overlooked, and important parts of myself are ignored.Ā
The BIC doesn't do that to Mob. When he struggles, they just make room for him to do so. They treat him like every other person in the group, and care about him. When he needs them (when captured by the gang), they are there. When he just needs space to struggle, they give it to him. They are all very passionate and āflamboyantā (for lack of a better word), and Mob is quite the opposite. He experiences āflat effectā so he is literally the opposite of how they are, but they just accept it and are happy to find another friend and club member. They celebrate his achievements, no matter how small it may seem compared to their own. They take the time to teach him things they already know and may seem obvious to them, but Mob is unfamiliar with them. They always celebrate and accept differences, instead of ostracize them.
So if find that when looking at the series through a lens of autism, Mobās lack of physical ability can somewhat be seen as an allegory for his social differences. So BOTH of those being accepted and celebrated is really beautiful and refreshing, and I think that itās extremely valuable for autistic people to see Mobās friendships. It was for me!
as always, conversation and feedback is highly encouraged on this post!
