after mob becomes an established employee reigen definitely thinks about quitting smoking to not be a bad influence,,,he probably tries to ignore lewd thoughts by pretending that mob is projecting them onto him,,,pervert ((( ̄へ ̄井),,,
(it's my first attempt at writing a fic in english so i'm open to any criticism and advices about grammar n stuff, help me get better at it!!) i'm planning to turn it into some sort of series so this chapter-type-of-thing is actually just a first meeting of mob and reigen at the nurse office.
i accidentally made mob way more depressed than i planned so yeah this thing is sorta mob pov with 50% of the text is his thoughts and fears and 50% dialogue with reigen.
2612, mobrei, first meeting, loser4loser
It was the first work day of Kageyama Shigeo in the Salt Middle School in The Seasoning City. His hometown, the same school he went himself back in the day, the same corridors and even principal hadn't changed in these years!
His whole world felt like a sairdine tin filled up with those familiar faces who just seem to get more and more annoyed when you stare at them for too long, childhood playgrounds that are weird even to pass by for some reason, flickering lampposts covered in part time jobs ads in every color possible and so many unsaid things that actually sit tight on your neck like an ill-fitting tie on an interview day. And now he's a school nurse, a twenty-something year old esper who's been suppressing his powers for at least two decades, trying hard to find a way to live a normal life in order to keep everybody around himself safe. Safe. Just keep them all safe.
And in that exact moment that tint was pierced open. The 4PM on the electric clock. The most exhaustingly hot summer day ever.
— Hellooo? Anybody in here?
— Come right in.
The door creaked behind the boy stepping slightly hesitant with his worn out white shoes on slippery shiny floors of the nursering cabinet. "A ginger cat" — the thought made its way in Shigeo's mind when he stared at the surprisingly warm toned hair boy fixing his gakuran gold collar buttons in the wall mirror.
— So you are the new school nurse everybody's talking about? — his head cocked on the side as the two shiny eyes met older man's ghost white medical gown.
— Yes, I think so, — he sound jarred to hear his own voice coming out of the dried out mouth. In fact he barely talked to anyone since morning in the main office, — My principal told me that you've been missing a nurse so they hired me...kinda.
— Did you just say my principal? You don't look like a middle schooler to me. — the boy stared way to serious like he was the one who meant to examinate the other. That made his silly joke sound even weirder.
— Sorry, I just ugh... I used to study in that school.
— Wait, really?, — he must have jumped a little when he heard the man in front of him. Was it way too unexpected? Is he gonna make fun of me returning into the same school he used to go years ago? A slightly playful smirk appeared on a little face, — That sucks! Growing up to end up working at the same school you went back in the day? I bet this place didn't change a bit in these years you weren't around.
Well, he wasn't wrong. The ultimate existence of Kageyama Shigeo was a vicious circle full of compromises of preserving oneself in a familiar yet comforting place like living in a flat next to his parents house, getting the same haircut since forever, buying the exact same box of instant coffee for 5 years now (even if it tastes like nothing mixed with milk powder and sugar), going back to wearing these formal shirts his mother got him when he first ever started taking nursing classes ((even if they're stiff and make him look like a phantom of a man he was supposed to be if he was actually ok)). The normal one, the useful unit of society, the son that you're proud of and not trying to hide and joke off on a family events featuring some unexpected relatives.
And it really sucks.
— You're right, it actually didn't change at all, — the man tried to sound more alive than he actually were. Unsuccessful, — And i'm kinda glad it didn't.
— Yeeaahh, — the next moment he actually glanced at the kid he was looking for something at the bookshelf? Distracted, — so what was your name again?
— You can call me Mob.
— Wait whaaat? Isn't it kinda disrespectful??
If you really think about it is disrespectful. Why calling an adult such thing? Why giving a random kid from a school you've been sent to your medical practice your not-so-cool nickname to call you that? Maybe that was a weak spot of Kageyama Shigeo — lack of friends and pleasant social experience. Maybe he wanted to appeal more trustful to that kid. Somehow. Maybe a nickname would do a trick. Maybe degrading yourself in front of a kid this way is almost the same as being friendly. He barely can tell the difference.
— Well, when I was your age peers used to call me that so it's ok.
— I still don't get it really. Ok fine, well, Mob it is.
— Great. So what's your name and what brought you in here exactly?, — yeah, right. You're not here to make friends, Mob. You're here to give another shot of being normal and useful.
— You must heard about me already, — the kid hitted a pose something pointing at himself with a thumb and another hand on his hip, — I'm Reigen Arataka — the no.1 karate fighter in the whole school, i mean, the whole city, yeah!
Mob wasn't really into superstitions and fate. But he was 100% sure that since he's working here this office needed a miracle. And here comes a miracle maker.
— No, I don't think I ever heard about you, Reigen-san.
— Well, now you have! Anyway, — Reigen walked back and forth infront of a newbie-kankoshi who watched him with a fist under his jaw, — I just wanted to stop by and say hi. We gonna meet again soon, 'cause you know, I gotta keep my title of the best fighter so there might blood happening! Maybe even tomorrow!
Oh, great. Oh, no. No no no
— I highly recommend not to participate in any fights out of your karate classes. Especially in school.
— Heyya, I thought you gonna be a cool adult since you gave me your nickname, Mob. And now you're just being boring!
Is this kid trying to manipulate me into something?
— I'm really curious what were you expecting to hear from a school nurse, Reigen-san.
— Something like "I got your back!" or "feel free to come in here anytime!"
Oh, I think I get it now Mob finally made a conclusion he also trying to make friends. Like yeah, why on earth a kid would be interested in saying hi to a new school nurse at the end of a school day if he had friends to hang out with?
— You're funny.
— You're not laughing.
So they laughed. Mob was surprised at himself that he could snap just like that and laugh? Still not to loud but for a brief moment Mob thought that maybe it'll be great in here. Maybe he will fit in.
— Ok, since you're totally find I'll see you here on tuesdays, thursdays and fridays whenever you'll need my medical service.
Reigen seemed relaxed and agitated at the same time under the beaming through the window curtais sunlight. He swung on his heals and then waved holding onto the doors handle.
— Well that's great to hear!, — he snapped and pointed at the Mob with a finger gun, — I gotta go so see you later, Mob!
The older man placed his open palm near his face and moved it just a bit. The door closed with a muffled slam and behind it something like laughter and accelerating footsteps could be heard going down the stairs followed by the low hum of the whole building. Mob placed his palms facing up and raised his head to the ceiling with his eyes closed.
See you later, Reigen.
⬆️⬆️⬆️ me writing this thing 100% for my own enjoyment be like
ok so that's it! share your thoughts if you'd like to. (i'm gonna check for grammar mistakes later so it might be updated really soon) i'm not really familiar with how to tag this kind of thing properly so let me know if i missed something. as i said i'm planning to turn it into multi chapter story featuring them 2814 and so on with some "blood happening" just like reigen warned you (after all it's a school nurse au) and turn it into some sort of romance thing? but really ambiguous with some unresolved tension. the way i like it the most yeah.
stay tuned!
— cy, for the best people out there!
gotta thank my moot @latinumenthusiast for cheering me up to write this thing down, love you!!
