The song is based on a real experience.”

The collaboration with ThatHippyDee, featured on the track, was serendipitous. “In 2021, I posted a clip of me rapping the first verse on Instagram. Later that day, Dee hit me up and said, ‘When I heard what you posted, I immediately started writing to it.’ He sent it over, and I was blown away. It was perfect timing because I’d been struggling with the second verse.”

This organic connection brought “Wednesday” full circle. “I met Dee in high school, so it went along with the theme,” she adds.

A Name Full of Meaning

The title “Wednesday” holds layers of significance for LovelyOcean. “It was the day my friends and I looked forward to—it was the one day we got out of school early,” she says. Beyond that, the release date added a personal touch. “I was born on a Wednesday, and when I released the song in 2022, it came out on my birthday, which was also a Wednesday. It’s a chill story about being young, being with friends, and not worrying about everything else going on around us. Honestly, it’s a nice song to smoke to.”

Crafting the Vibe

The creative process for “Wednesday” was both rewarding and challenging. “The first verse and hook came together quickly, but the second verse was tough,” LovelyOcean recalls. “After I set it aside, Dee’s verse brought it all together. The process was collaborative yet smooth.”

The music video, directed by Ari (@sunflowerarii) and shot by Daniel (@danielsun.media), added a visual layer to the narrative. “We were going for an industrial vibe, and we were lucky to shoot in the art district where my boyfriend works,” she shares. “One of the standout moments was seeing how they layered multiple shots of me into one frame—it was like there were two of me!”

The Response to “Wednesday”

The reception to “Wednesday” has been overwhelmingly positive, reigniting interest in the track released back in 2022. “The video put the song back into people’s rotation,” LovelyOcean notes. “People are impressed with the storytelling and visuals. It’s also gained popularity in unexpected places like Brazil and the Netherlands, thanks to ads and marketing efforts.”

The Artistic Evolution

LovelyOcean’s journey into music began with poetry and storytelling. “I started writing poems and stories in elementary school, but I didn’t write real songs until 2017,” she explains. Influenced by the records her dad played, CDs her sister spun, and music videos she watched with her cousin, she always knew she wanted to perform.

Her sound—chill, melodic, and lyrical—is rooted in 90s hip-hop influences like Rapsody, Black Moon, and Queen Latifah. “I put a lot of thought into beat selection and lyrics to create vivid imagery for listeners,” she says. Her authenticity is what sets her apart. “I don’t have a typical California or LA sound, but I’m just being myself. The authenticity shines through every time.”

Overcoming Challenges

As an independent artist, LovelyOcean has faced her share of obstacles. “The biggest challenges are financing everything and not comparing myself to others,” she admits. “I work full-time and have adult bills, so I use what I can for ads and promo. Sometimes I think, ‘Maybe if I sounded like them, I’d be more popular,’ but I can’t sacrifice my sound to fit the status quo.”

Her determination is unwavering: “There’s room for all women in rap to succeed. I’m sticking to my authenticity.”

The Rewards of Staying True

For LovelyOcean, one of the most rewarding moments came this year at a performance. “An MC recognized me from another show and introduced me to the crowd, saying I was dope. That recognition meant so much and made the crowd tune in.”

What’s Next for LovelyOcean?

With “Wednesday” gaining traction, LovelyOcean has already released her album, Better Than Ever, and is brainstorming her next project for 2025. “I’m focusing on marketing my current music and booking my first international performance,” she reveals.

Her dream collaboration? “Vince Staples. He’s an excellent storyteller and so authentically himself. I admire that.”

To women breaking into the rap game, she offers sage advice: “Be yourself. Stop putting yourself in a box. Stand strong and be careful with who you trust—some folks will use your kindness against you.”
