THE ONLY LIGHT is the soft glow of the moon trickling through the open window. The duvet is crumpled at their feet and the sheets tangle around them. He opens his eyes. There’s the sound of cars, distant honking, and the wind as it plays with the curtain. He wiggles a little, trying to dig down deeper into the mattress, wondering what it is that had woken him up. Not a nightmare. Not a noise.
He twists his head, looking over at his wife who responds to his movement while still asleep. She has her back to him, but moves closer, as if recognizing that a source of warmth had distanced itself. He smiles, a tired expression that is nonetheless fond, and rolls over onto his side, wrapping his body around hers with the aid that peculiarly snug fit that the pair of them have.
An arm falls across her, at her waist, and his hand searches for hers. He finds one, and covers her fingers with his. He buries his face in her hair, unbound and silky as it covers the pillow, and breathes her in. With a small sigh of contentment, he brushes his lips against the back of her neck. Then he closes his eyes and in a matter of moments falls back into sleep.
Karter hates feeling vulnerable, so much so that it has a very very intense effect on him. Often times he is aggressive or he simply shuts down emotionally if he starts to feel exposed ESPECIALLY to a person he doesn't really care for all that much. A prime example is @aureafortunae's Elena. Karter cannot stand her and as a result if he were to have a moment of 'weakness' or 'vulnerability' with her there to witness it he would react very poorly. This stems essentially from both his hatred of exposing his vulnerability and the fact that he doesn't at all trust her. As a result he'd just feel violated by her bearing witness to it and ultimately end up becoming twice as aggressive or simply indifferent to her altogether.
