We’re excited to have been invited to speak at the HCID Open Day 2015: Design at Work, taking place next week at the Centre for Human Computer Interaction Design in London. J. Paul Neeley, co-founder of Yossarian, will talk about how search engines today pose a dilemma: on the one hand they are incredibly powerful tools when we know what we are looking for, but when we don’t know what we’re seeking, in moments where real creativity is needed, traditional search engines can be extremely limiting. They become self referential echo chambers, reinforcing existing and popular ideas and doing very little to support truly new concepts. In this talk J. Paul will explore new approaches to search which offer lateral and metaphorical results, thus facilitating creativity and discovery on the web.

The HCID Open Day is a free mini conference where invited guest speakers from industry and academia gather to talk about innovation and creativity in UX, HCI, interaction design and other related fields. This year’s theme is ‘Design at Work’ with talks around best practice within design professions, designing products aimed at business environments, and advice on how researchers and designers can cooperate.

Yossarian is a powerful creative tool that helps you generate and share ideas. It's used by people who are looking to see their problem or topic in a new way. In these moments lateral associations are perfect and can often very quickly help people find solutions to the ideas they are exploring. 

Behind the tool is some really exciting technology based on lateral discovery and metaphorical association. Because our individual ability to generate these types of associations is limited because it is based on our own experience. One of the powers of Yossarian is that it in a way knows much more about the world than we do and is able to make lateral leaps that we might not have been able to see. 

We like to call this process of suggestion "Augmented Creativity." The system isn't replacing our own creativity, but rather it is augmenting it or supporting it, helping us to be creative by suggesting to us associations and ideas that we may not have considered. Its like brainstorming a topic with a really really creative friend who has read much more about the world, just in this case its a computer. The user then selects the ideas that work best for them in that moment.

The process of creativity generally is incredibly complex, difficult and oft left to serendipity. We believe Yossarian becomes a valuable tool in these moments and can help improve the outcomes by augmenting our creativity, speeding our time to ideas, increasing diversity of our ideas, and helping us see new ideas that we may not have considered on our own.
