Thin Walls is a series of audio installations that, when listened to in its entirety, present like a diary of sound. Each track feels like a room in a forgotten building. As we move through these spaces, we are invited to relate to the sounds those spaces create. The result is a multisensory experience where walls feel thin, memories linger and sound becomes something we can almost touch.
Thin Walls offers a look into Holden Linton’s inner world and personal architecture of thought. Recorded between 2021 and 2025 in North Philadelphia, the album reverberates within abandoned apartments, old bedrooms and other domestic spaces.
Track seven, Plastic Trees (05:14), stands out. In it, Linton blends rhythmic sound art with spoken word to reflect on artificial comfort and feelings of alienation. He asks, “Can we be made? Can we be made? Time holds, blind folds. Can we be made? Can we be made? These hands aren’t mine anymore. These shoes can’t run anymore.” The track balances poetic depth with rougher, more abrasive textures. It gives the album an emotional center and contrasts with more non-idiomatic tracks like Sharp Polygon Texture (7:26) and Default (3:37).
Instead of relying on melody or polish, Thin Walls focuses on embodiment and physical presence. The lo-fi sound increases a sense of intimacy with Linton. Everyday materials such as dust, glass, plastic, trash and even Linton’s own body become part of the composition. The album masterfully moves between sound art, field recordings and noise without drawing clear boundaries between them.
Ultimately, Thin Walls invites listeners to step inside. It builds a world where noise and environment are tethered. The result is an immersive and porous listening experience. Thin Walls is both a space to explore and a memory to hold.

In February 1917, Congress passed the Immigration Act, a law that aimed at restricting immigrant entry into America. This marked a turn towards nativism and demonstrated a fractured and anxious perception of what constituted American cultural identity. 100 years later, and we’re still navigating these issues.
On February 23, 2017, at Ace Hotel New York, we’re handing over the mic to the diverse voices of America’s pioneering immigrant population with Unconditional, an immersive sound installation. Speakers around the lobby will broadcast audio clips on loop, creating a unified, impenetrable din of overlapping sounds.
Do you have a sound to share? Audio recordings of street/bird/night sounds from a particularly meaningful place? A soundbite of your nana telling a story about her childhood? We’d love to hear from you. Submit an audio file for possible inclusion in the installation, and win a night’s stay at Ace Hotel New York while you’re at it. Deadline for submissions is February 17.
