Hi, I've been reading the recent posts about becoming a veterinarian with great interest. I want to be a vet, but know that I would not be able to mentally handle putting down any animal that was not in unbelievable and unrelenting pain. I know that I would give 100% on any animal that came in, and I also know from experience working as a receptionist at a vet/cattery that this will cause issues. Is there any way for me to be in the vet industry and use my abilities to help?
Of course there is but you’re going to have to be selective in your place of employment, and do some soul searching. Some clinics will not put down a potentially adoptable animal, others are not in a position to indulge that freedom.
Firstly, you need to add mentally unsound and dangerous to the list of reasons you might put an animal down. Some animals may be physically healthy, but are unable to enjoy a good quality of life or are a danger to others, and so they are put to sleep.
Also, we often euthanise pets before they reach a state of unbelievable and unrelenting pain’. We want to prevent pain wherever possible, not just treat it when it’s at its most extreme.
Lastly, if you’re adamant about only putting down animals that are in ‘unbelievable and unrelenting pain’ then there are some vegetarians and vegans that would like to talk philosophy with you.
