Prompt: You were a princess in name alone. Unable to perform any of the duties that come with the title. It seemed to be your destiny to live a quiet life. That is until you met someone who refused to see you silenced. Perhaps your fate was wrong all along.
“How’s my scent?”
“Hm… it’s like a warm fire in the middle of winter, comforting and safe.”
“I like that.”
“What about me?”
“Your scent is that of honey and flowers, although I don’t know if the flowers are you, or just your love of gardening that has become one with you. Either way, I like it and never want to leave.”
You snuggled closer to Seonghwa, enjoying this moment, but were soon startled by the sound of whistling. You couldn’t help but jump and look around in panic, but Seonghwa was quick to return your attention to him.
“Easy, it’s just Hongjoong.”
“Hongjoong?”
“Yes, he’s letting us know that we should wrap this up soon.”
“Oh…”
“Although… perhaps I can convince him to let us stay out longer.”
“More cuddles?”
“I was actually thinking of something else.”
“Like what?”
“Well, we’re already out here. Maybe you’d like to visit the night market.”
“Really!?”
“If you want.”
“Yes! Yes, please! I’d love to, Seonghwa.”
“Then let’s do it.”
You happily got dressed, playing a bit by the riverside as the other two packed everything up, Seonghwa also trying to convince Hongjoong to take you to the night market.
“That’s incredibly dangerous, Seonghwa.”
“Being out here is already dangerous, why not do more?”
“Seonghwa.”
“Just for a while. We both know we still have time, besides, we won’t be coming back out anytime soon.”
“… fine, just for a bit.”
As you walked through the market you looked around with childlike wonder. The place was so alive, like nothing you had ever seen at the palace before. Beautiful smells filled the air, children ran around laughing and playing games, everything was a wonderful sight to you.
“Seonghwa…”
“Hm?”
“Thank you.”
“My pleasure. Are you hungry perhaps? I know of a wonderful noodle shop.”
“I’d love some noodles.”
“Come on, my treat.”
You happily followed Seonghwa over to this little place, getting a bowl of cold noodles before you. For a moment you just stared in awe before taking a bite, your eyes lighting up in joy. This tasted amazing, something you’d never have in the palace.
“Is it good?”
“Delicious.”
Seonghwa knew he was pushing it, but he really wanted you to experience as much as you could tonight. Hongjoong was definitely throwing glances his way, not wanting to outright ruin the night, and it was about time to be heading back. He excused himself to go pay for the late night meal, thinking about making one last stop before returning to the palace.
“Lord Park, is that you?”
When Seonghwa heard his title being called he looked over, met with an unfortunate scene. The Crown Prince stood a few feet from him, dressed in common clothes, his entourage disguised and at his side. Of all the things to happen, this was the worse one. Seonghwa kept his composure though, offering a smile and stepping closer to the other.
“Lord Jeong, what brings you out here late into the night?”
“I wanted to get familiar with the night life of the townspeople, and I needed some fresh air. What of yourself? I didn’t think you’d be out at night either.”
“I’m merely seeing off an old friend who was in town visiting.”
“I see. Perhaps we should plan for a proper outing ourselves. I’m sure there is much of the night life you could show me.”
“It would be an honor.”
“Very well, I won’t keep you from your friend any longer. Good night.”
“Good night.”
Seonghwa remained put, watching the Crown Prince walk off and disappear from sight. Only then did he return to the table. He quietly glanced over at Hongjoong, receiving confirmation that he was aware of what had just transpired, but that you were alright and completely oblivious to the situation. Although Seonghwa knew he was going to get an earful about this from Hongjoong later. Since it wasn’t best to linger outside the palace any longer, Seonghwa took you back straight away, forgetting about any other plans. Your safety mattered most at this moment. You returned to the palace the same way you left, and soon enough you were back in your quarters. Seonghwa helped you undress and get back into your normal clothes, making sure to tuck you in bed and then lie down at your side for a moment.
“Tonight was incredibly fun… thank you so much for showing me… it was the best night of my life…”
“I will find a time so we can venture out again, but I am glad you enjoyed yourself.”
“I can’t thank you enough.” You couldn’t help but pepper Seonghwa’s face with kisses. “You’re the best!”
“Yes, yes, alright.” Seonghwa couldn’t help but laugh. “Easy, someone might hear us.”
“Okay, thank you though, really.”
“You don’t have to keep saying that.”
“But I mean it.”
“Your smile is very telling. Now, you should get some rest, you’re surely exhausted.”
“Nope, I’m full of energy actually.”
“Well, I need you to close your eyes and sleep. Or else someone might realize something is up, can you do that for me?”
“Alright, fine… I’ll try.”
“Good. You deserve sweet dreams after an exciting night out.”
“You too. Make sure to rest.”
“I will. Sleep well, good night.”
Seonghwa kissed your head, making sure you closed your eyes and got comfy, only sneaking away when he was sure you were drifting off. Bits of daylight were peeking over the horizon as night was truly coming to an end.
“I don’t want to hear it.” Seonghwa stated.
“Hear what? About what happened at the market?”
“Hongjoong.”
“Do you have any idea what would have happened if we were caught? By the Crown Prince himself no less.”
“Enough. We made it back undetected.”
“We did, yet you don’t seem all that happy. What’s the matter?”
“I learned something that calls into question all I know.”
“What? Does this mean you need to change your plans?”
“No, this changes something else. I need to look at the royal family records, specifically the ones in the Crown Prince’s library.”
“You are not serious? Are you actually jumping from one dangerous thing to another?”
“I have to look into this.”
“And what exactly is this?”
It wasn’t entirely a good idea to share this information, but he needed Hongjoong to understand the severity of this situation. Seonghwa pulled his friend close, whispering in his ear. Hongjoong’s eyes went wide, left stunned as he processed.
“… Seonghwa… are you sure about this?”
“I am, but I need more information. Of course this doesn’t need to be said, but this stays between us. If you can’t keep quiet, cut out your tongue now, cause I will kill you if this gets out.”
“I’m well aware of the situation, but how do you intend to get into the Crown Prince’s library?”
“I have an idea.”

As of late a lot had been weighing on Yunho’s mind. He needed to think and step out of the palace, so he found himself venturing out more often. It was nice to walk among the people and enjoy a different type of fresh air. Of course his activities wouldn’t go unnoticed. One day before he could step out he was informed that the King wanted to see him. There was an overdue conversation to be had, so Yunho made no complaint and went as requested. The two sat alone in the throne room, sharing some tea as they usually do.
“How have your ventures outside the palace been? I trust you aren’t being reckless.”
“Of course not. I’m merely getting familiar with the world outside the palace. The people out there will one day be under my care.”
“Indeed.” The King cleared his throat. “I heard you took over responsibilities for the princess’ care. Her health has been improving since then, she got her claws in. Surely her fangs are next, then her eyes, and then everyone will know of the princess’ true nature.”
“There’s no need to concern yourself with such matters. I will handle it and take care of her.”
“You can’t be so sure of such things. I know you worry about the princess but-”
“As if you care so much. You knew about the wolfsbane and allowed it to happen because it served your interests.”
“That was not an easy decision to make.”
“Yet it was one you lived with for years! You’re quite heartless.”
“I am protecting both of you, even if you don’t understand it.”
“Make me.”
“Excuse me?”
“Enlighten me, make me understand why poisoning my sister is a means to protect her.”
The King took a moment. “I was once in your position. I held the title of Crown Prince and was meant to ascend the throne. Yet my younger brother decided to challenge me for the crown. We were both of royal blood, I may have been the oldest, but it was still his right to challenge me as he was an alpha too. Do you know what the results were?”
“Isn’t it obvious?”
“And what became of your uncle?”
“He’s dead. He died by your hand during that battle.”
“No, he didn’t die, I made the choice to kill him. I had to. Your uncle’s actions made it clear he desired the throne. If I had let him live after defeating him in battle, things would not merely end there. Our enemies reside within the palace, and beyond its walls. They would have turned the two of us against each other, and chaos would overtake the palace. I was not going to allow that to happen.”
“I would never hurt my sister.” Yunho stated. “And she would never do anything to hurt me either.”
“These things can happen beyond your control.”
“I won’t allow it.”
“You say that, but you don’t know what will happen in the future. I was overjoyed when news of the Queen’s pregnancy came to light, yet when the physician informed me the Queen was having twins, I grew worried. If the two of you were alphas, it was likely you’d fight for the throne, and I did not want a repeat of what happened between me and my brother. All I could do was hope that things would be alright.”
“I guess to you they weren’t.”
“I was very happy the day you and the princess were born. I believed there wouldn’t be an issue, but then you both presented. I did not want to lose either one of you.”
“Liar! Do you have any idea what you’ve put my sister through all these years! All her life!”
“I have been protecting you all these years, whether you see it that way or not. It would have been better if only one of you were born, but perhaps this is punishment for what I did to my own brother.”
“You can believe your delusions all you want, but I would never treat my sister in such a manner. I will keep her safe.”
“It is only a matter of time before the truth comes to light if you leave things this way.”
“It won’t come to that.”
Yunho had nothing more to say and certainly did not want to continue this conversation. So he excused himself, knowing he needed to get out of the palace just to breathe properly. He knew he was bound to clash with the King over matters pertaining to you, but it felt like a line was being crossed. He was nothing like the King, and he did not intend to end up like him. At least while outside the palace he could distract himself. Even if he wasn’t going to admit it, he knew there was a high chance of the truth being revealed. He needed to figure out a way to protect you without having to resort to drastic measures. While he browsed the market, lost in thought, he wound up running into a familiar face once again.
“Lord Park, I’m quite surprised to find you out here once more.”
“I might say the same, Lord Jeong. Stepping out must be a new habit of yours.”
“It would seem so. Might I ask what the flowers are for?”
“Ah, they’re nice to have, and I enjoy supporting the local business.”
For a while the two kept each other company, Seonghwa showing Yunho around to the best places. There was much to do during the day, just as there were plenty of activities during the night. Although Seonghwa had to excuse himself first as he did have matters to attend to. Yunho remained out in the markets for a while longer before returning as well. He kept constant tabs on your health, but there hadn’t been any major developments as of late. It was both good, and somewhat concerning. Perhaps it would just take time for everything to come in, so he just needed to be patient.

Seonghwa was well aware that the Crown Prince had been stepping out a lot more often. That meant he would have his chance to sneak into the library, he just needed to plan accordingly. In the meantime, things went back to their usual routines. One of his favorite things to do was get you some pastries early in the morning. This led to a minor run-in with the Crown Prince on one occasion. He was of course polite, but he was getting annoyed with the fact their paths kept crossing. He let it go though, going off to see you.
“Seonghwa! I told you I had my weekly check-up this morning, you shouldn’t be here.”
“I know, I know, but I got you some pastries. You need a reward after seeing the physician.”
“… you’re the best.”
“Of course I am.”
“Can I at least have one now?”
“Just one, okay.”
“Fine.”
You took the bag from Seonghwa, taking in a big whiff of the pastries. They always smelled so good, and the warmth was so comforting. Just as promised you’d only have one, picking the biggest you could find. Although before you could take a bite Seonghwa stopped you, grabbing your wrist.
“What?”
“You don’t feel it?”
“Feel what?”
“Y/n, your fangs are poking out.”
“Really!?”
You eagerly went over to the mirror, eyes going wide as you saw your fangs in the reflection. You were checking yourself, gently reaching to poke them.
“Careful, they’re sharp.”
“They’re so cool.”
“They are, but you need to learn to control them or you will hurt yourself.”
“I know, I know.”
You happily ate your pastry as Seonghwa helped walk you through controlling your fangs. You kinda got the hang of it, but would still need more practice. He couldn’t stay much longer, but you’d have his help later that night. Of course Yeosang was happy to learn of this new development, giving you tips as well. You were glad to be coming into your power, and you couldn’t wait to show Yunho as well. He was out of the palace at the moment, but you knew the second he got back he would come visit you. In the meantime you could work on control.

It wasn’t until midday that Yunho returned to the palace. His arrival was met with good news as he was informed of your latest development. He was happy to hear, going to visit you as soon as he could. When he arrived he found you staring at the mirror.
“How do they feel?”
“Weird… they’re a part of me, but they feel so new, almost fake but they’re not.”
“They are very real, and you need to be careful.”
“I know, that’s why I’m trying to learn control. Any tips?”
“Breathe and focus. Your fangs are just another part of you, controlling them should be like flexing your fingers.”
“I’m getting there, slowly but surely. The fangs are also a lot of fun.”
You stepped away from the mirror and grabbed your last pastry. You still had some food around, having taken your time with your meal as you were playing around with your fangs as well. Yunho was happy to watch you, although his gaze was drawn elsewhere for a moment. He noticed the flowers in your room, believing they looked similar to the ones Seonghwa had purchased a few days ago. Not to mention you had just been eating pastries from outside the palace. He didn’t comment on any of that though, something else coming to mind.
“Have you spoken to Lord Park as of late?”
You choked on air for a second. “What? Lord Park? What are you talking about? I don’t get to leave my quarters, remember? He tried talking to me and I got locked up. I hope he doesn’t feel guilty about it though, it wasn’t really his fault.”
“Right. I’ll relay your sentiments to him.”
“Thank you.”
Yunho stuck around for a little longer, giving you advice on how to master your new ability. Then he excused himself, promising to come again soon. He left seeing a bright smile on your face, knowing that wouldn’t be fading anytime soon.
“Jongho.”
“Yes, your highness?”
“Keep an eye on Seonghwa going forward, and report everything back to me.”
“Yes, your highness.”

There wasn’t really a pattern to when the Crown Prince stepped out, or for how long, so Seonghwa needed to get lucky, or real plan for this. To his own surprise he got the perfect chance. The day your fangs came in, he knew the Crown Prince was outside the palace, and once he returned he’d surely visit you. It meant for that day he’d have a proper warning system. He’d know when the Crown Prince returned and would know where he’d be. This was the best chance he was going to get. So after leaving you he made sure to confirm the Crown Prince was gone, and then snuck into his private library.
Hongjoong would be his look out, so at least for now he didn’t have to worry about getting caught. It was quite a treat to be in the Crown Prince’s library alone, especially since this place was only ever meant for one person, and that wasn’t him. He browsed the shelves, seeing the type of books the Crown Prince used in his studies, but he wasn’t seeing any records of the royal family. They had to be here somewhere as it was essential to his studies. While looking around a bookshelf in the back caught his attention. It stuck out a bit compared to the shelves next to it. He approached, finding he could move it into the wall until it revealed itself to be a door into a secret room.
Seonghwa stepped into this new area, seeing more shelves filled with books. A quick glance over them and he could see these were similar to what was out in the rest of the library. He was about to grab one when he noticed a book on the table nearby, seeing that it was what he had truly been looking for. He grabbed the book, browsing the pages and growing concerned. He’s done his research on the royal family lineage but the book in his hands told another story. What he was reading seemed wrong, seemed impossible, but such a book being in a secret room in the Crown Prince’s library meant it held some truth. In fact reading this confirmed his own suspicions and he hated what it meant.
Despite his better judgement he took the book with him, making his way out of the library. Hongjoong was waiting for him outside, rather surprised to see him so soon. He noticed the book in the other’s hand but made no comment as the two returned to Seonghwa’s quarters. It was only when they were alone that Seonghwa handed over the book, letting Hongjoong read for himself. Hongjoong’s silence and shocked look told him everything. This information didn’t just change things, it brought so much more into question. Seonghwa still didn’t know what to do with it himself.
“Seonghwa… this… is it real?”
“This book was in a secret room in the Crown Prince’s library. The records there are similar to the official ones except for one change, and I know it’s not a lie.”
“Doesn’t this change everything though? Your plan…”
Hongjoon’s words trailed off as he realized above all else, Seonghwa was pissed. He couldn’t really understand why, but he knew this information was upsetting.
“Seonghwa.”
“All these years… everything was a lie… and for what exactly?”
“What do you want to do now?”
“I… I have to tell her the truth… she deserves that, but… all these years… I don’t know how she’ll take it… I don’t know how I…”
“You’re sure about this, right?”
“I didn’t say anything before because I wasn’t sure… but now I am… I just need time to process and figure out what I actually want to do…”
