I think.” A sudden idea cut through her confusion. “How many fingers am I holding up?” The boy did a quick digit check. “Four.” “And that doesn’t bother you?” “No. To me a number is a number. Four is no more a harbinger of death than any other whole number. Fractions, though, they’re freakish.” The youth smiled at his own joke. A smile of such simple saintly goodness that it would have made Artemis retch. Holly was drawn into the psychosis and had to ask,

“So if you’re not Artemis Fowl, then who are you?” The boy extended a dripping hand straight up.

furthermore, his crimes against faeries and humanity, as well as his crimes (presumed and shown in canon) against the environment and nature occur in a time when he is actively trying to distance himself from his childhood and "childish" activities/fancies.

furtherfuthermore, as he ages in the books, his acceptance of and protectiveness of nature and his distain for humans who destroy it or are careless with it grows in a way that perfectly demonstrates his reversal of conventional ideas of maturity. What many people would consider childish and naïve, he gains as he grows, he becomes less outwardly mature as he ages, but more emotionally mature, and thusly more connected with the earth and the "childish" things he'd previously tried to distance himself from whilst trying to live up to the Fowl name.

furtherfurtherfurthermore, when he is suffering from the Atlantis complex, a psychotic break brought on from guilt over his adolescent actions, the two things he attaches to are numerical patterns and attempting to fix humanity's sin towards the natural, the destruction of the Earth's glaciers. Things from his childhood.

He spends months with his effort to solve global warming, and he's almost self-sacrificial with it. He volunteers to spend a large chunk of his own money and time, this would no doubt effect him and his lifestyle but he offers to take the brunt of that from the LEP (an organization he knows has plenty of funds)

"Orion was unperturbed. "I share everything. Memories and movies are as real as each other to me. You, Peter Pan, the Loch Ness Monster, me. It’s all real, maybe.'"

In the midst of psychotic delusion, his actions noticeably turn to influences from his childhood. Mythology of magic and creatures, leading to Orion's hysterical misunderstanding of Foaly's role in the group, movies, leading to Orion's attempts to fulfil common tropes.

"Oh, I'm crazy all right. I do have plenty of psychoses. Multiple personality, delusional dementia, OCD. I've got them all, but most of all, I'm crazy about you."

Orion's suggestion of delusional dementia is also interesting.

Though Orion and Artemis appear to have no memory blocks between the two of them, nor the amnesia or cognitive decline which are the hallmark symptoms of dementia, one thing very common in dementia patients is the mental return to their youth, and they do experience the psychological symptoms of delusional dementia.

Artemis's building of the ice-cube, his obsessions with numerical patterns, his self-blame for humanity's actions, his/Orion's difficulty differentiating from memories, movies, delusions, and reality. His preoccupation with his adolescent actions...
