Neither of them wanted this job (and before you come at me about their joining the army, there’s a lot of countries in the real world that have mandatory military service. The Fire Nation is one of them, beginning with Sozin’s orders)

There’s an active Fire Nation rebellion

The Fire Nation becomes a democracy by the end (thanks @cryoud!), and I’m still hammering out the details for it

Sokka becomes a diplomat for the Southern Water Tribe

Bending relies on a LOT of things to keep working, including: spirits, four gemstones, celestial events, qi flow, and hereditary ability

More. Variety. In. Bending. And more applications for it than just fighting

More culture in the world. Like genuinely, I want more to it than what we got before; a waterbender group that lives by a lakeside, earthbenders that built into cliff faces, etc

More glowy effects; eyes lighting up when using bending, sparks of energy around what’s being bent, etc

I'm making EOTS, though, so I can do what I want with them; I can make the existing ones more worthwile through character development, or I can swap it up entirely.

Like. These people can stop someone bleeding out with little more than a gesture and a thought, that's vital!

It's a little more complicated than that; stopping blood in place doesn't keep someone from bleeding out. In fact, that can make its own problems if you mix up oxygenated and deoxygenated blood, or force blood backwards or stop the heart. That's a very easy way to send someone into shock.

It's a subset of firebending that outputs energy as a more concentrated light (still hot though, don't touch!). Skilled lightbenders can change the color of that light, and they can work as beacons or flares from afar.
