In my opinion, both Rafe and Sam (and even all the characters through all the games) are constantly tempting to be the Penitent Thief and the Jerk Thief — they both had selfish reasons above the treasure and came through horrible ways to achieve it. Actually, it's just they are playing as thieves (just as Nate before, a life he was trying to left behind when decides to go legally after treasures), and if they are jerk or penitent is determinant with their last words, just as Dismas and Gestas in the cross. I bet Dismas, the Penitent Thief made a lot of damage when he was a thief, but what made the difference was his final attitude towards death. When Rafe and Sam are near death, at the end of the game, they show different attitudes: Rafe is willing to kill Nate and Sam to get the treasure, but Sam accepts the mistakes he made and that those mistakes drove him to death. Nate, as Jesuschrist, finally saved him (well, we know he's also his brother, but I think it also gives more symbolism), and Sam manages to bring with him some "riches of paradise". Well, this is just a very short abstract of my opinion. What do you think?

I read a lot of theories about this, even saying Sam is Jesuschrist, but I’m really struck by the fact that Rafe can be Dismas, although I don’t really believe it — but that’s my own theory. Maybe this composition of Nate, Rafe and Sam it’s a trick by Naugthy Dog, or maybe could be interpreted from our perspective as Sam to the right of Nate/Jesus, and therefore he would be Dismas, and Rafe to his left, and therefore he would be Gestas. The Good Thief is usually represented during the crucifixion looking at Jesus Christ, and his attitude is usually serene, while the Evil Thief is represented not looking at Jesus, showing signs of pain and contorts on the cross. In this case, Rafe is not writhing in pain, but he has a very tense attitude with a frown in his face, compared to Sam, who is also looking at Nate. Maybe I’m freaking out? Probably. But I love the symbolic equivalence of these characters with the imaginary of the crucifixion — what can I say, I mixed videogames with my field if study. I’m with the theory about Sam as the Penitent Thief, although I’m also convinced by the theory that he’s Jesus Christ, since in a certain way he was who put Rafe and Nate in contact from the beginning, and who has “returned from the death” to give them a lesson: Nate returns to the adventure, the temptation, but ends up rejecting his obsession.
