Here’s my FACEBOOK Page for the AtariCrypt website. If you have any love for the Atari ST and retro games then pop along :-) https://www.facebook.com/AtariCrypt/
I’m currently in the process of fixing and modifying an Atari STE computer from 1989, and it’s gotten me thinking about how much the relationship between a user and their computer has changed in such a short timespan. In particular I’ve been thinking about how tactile elements of computer usage have been gradually erased over time. Typing now on my laptop I’m noticing how much smoother the keys are (as in, the plastic isn’t textured at all.) and how I’ve probably never used the CD/DVD drive once because everything is available to be downloaded from online sources. In a way modern computer designs are meant to be as unobtrusive as possible, allowing you to experience the media on your computer without ever drawing attention to any sort of unique quality the computer itself may possess. We talk about the idea of the Human-Interface, and yet it seems like ultimately the actual “Interface” itself is to eroded to the point of invisibility over time. Just as records and CDs vanished with the popularity of the MP3 player, the idea of “Using” a computer has vanished into the instant gratification of maximum media accessibility and omnipresent “user-friendly” minimalism.
Am I saying we need to bring back the floppy disk? Of course not, but I do think it would be interesting to explore how reducing the tactile elements of computing might have a negative impact on a human’s ability to focus on their task. Brains evolved to process multiple senses, and to shift priority from one sense to the next as the task requires. Those quiet moments I spend searching for the correct floppy disk are almost Zenlike in their ability to refocus my mind onto the current task. When I’m on my modern laptop, I forget that I’m even using a computer. The mindlessness with which I can navigate through websites traps me into unproductive loops through endless distractions.

A work in progress enhanced port of the classic racing game Outrun is coming to the Atari STe
I’m going to put my Atari STe into hibernation for a while and dig out the old Atari STM. I wish I had more desk space to run both but I don’t so let’s play with the older computer for a few weeks and have some fun!
This is the Atari ST version of Jet Set Willy. A game which plays exactly like the ZX Spectrum original but was never commercially released, sadly. https://ataricrypt.blogspot.co.uk/2015/10/mr-willy.html
