Meet Rama

Asvem

While I was at Asvem I met a man called Rama. We got talking and he said that he had been given a gift from God, an energy, to heal people. He said he had no training and no guru except the sun which he watches for 10 minutes every day to absorb energy from it. When there is a full moon he sleeps by the sea to absorb the energy from the moon and the waves. He offers healing for free because he doesn’t believe that a gift like this should be charged for. He did seem to place rather a lot of emphasis on helping women unblock their sexual energy which he said necessitated putting his hand you know where - but only if they agreed! Well I have a chronic bad back so I was weighing up this situation and wondering wether to go for it. In the end I thought bugger it and I did. So he asked me to lie face down and he rubbed some kind of Ayurvedic muscle relaxant into my back. Then he stood on my lower back, got hold of opposite arm and leg and yanked them sharply upwards. There was loud crunching but not as loud as my scream! Just to explain - I had a frozen shoulder with a full width tear to the tendon which I have never fully recovered from and both my shoulders have permanently restricted movement - and my left hip is extremely inflexible due to a long period of immobility in hospital when I was little. So this treatment hurt like hell! Then he did it on the other side, got off me and said ‘Problem solved’. I lay there in shock. But afterwards I was fine - and we had a chai together and he told me his life history. He married a woman with what sounds like very severe epilepsy which was kept hidden from him before the marriage. She was a very sick lady and broke her back and neck during fits. He was unable to help her and tried every doctor under the sun to no avail. Eventually he hired an elderly tantric doctor who told him she would only be cured by death but that he should not have sex with her because the energy of the disease would go into him. So for fifteen years he followed this advice and since he doesn’t believe in prostitution or sex for fun he remained celibate. His wife has died now so he is free to marry again - but he reminds me a bit of Catholic priests - trying hard to do the right thing and squashing their own desires. I’d like him to find a wife but somehow I don’t think he will. He said my back will get better now but slowly because I have had the problem a long time. I decided he was on the side of the Angels.
