A Structure Within a Structure: “The Echo of Hope”
Materials: Steel rods, yarns, and flowers
Dimensions: 41×17×17
The Echo of Hope is an abstract sculpture I made as a profile of a woman’s face to evoke deep emotions and concepts around hope, strength, and the fight for freedom. Made from steel rods that were welded together and wrapped with colored yarn of Flamingo Pink, Light Pink, Blond, Ocean Green, Jungle Green, and Caramel, this piece becomes a complex symbol. I chosen each color with intent, the pinks symbolize compassion, femininity, and sympathy; the greens represent growth, renewal, and healing; the blond provides a sense of warmth and confidence; and caramel comfort the work in strength and stability. I decided to place a few flowers around the face to further highlight femininity and beauty, as well as the natural growth of hope, even in challenging circumstances. These flowers act as a reminder of life's delicate yet strong qualities.
Placed in a corner, my sculpture uses its space to heighten its impact. In the dark, my sunset lamp shines across the sculpture, creating a soft yet intense shadow on the wall behind it. The shadow represents the pending hope the uncertain, fragile nature of faith that people hold onto during challenging times. Here, it symbolizes the ongoing fight for rights and freedoms, particularly around sensitive issues like abortion. In this shadowy setting, the colors are softened, and the figure's presence is more of a suggestion, as if hope itself is in a waiting or a dream held in the dark, existing but not yet fully grasped.
When the lights are turned on, my piece takes on a new meaning. The yarn colors become vivid and well-defined, symbolizing victory and the completion of struggle into achievement. With this brightness, my sculpture face becomes clear, demonstrating empowerment and the clearness that comes with self-assertion and the hard-won rights that rise after serious effort. In this lighted state, the piece embodies power, brightness, and the beauty of achieved hope, with the face coming into full view as a powerful symbol of freedom and faith fulfilled.
