Astrolabes from the Adler Planetarium’s collection, from top to bottom:
1. An astrolabe made in Baghdad in the 12th century.
2. The original design of this paper astrolabe dates from 1584. Since these were cheaper, fragile, and disposable instruments, it is very rare to find assembled examples in such a good condition!
3. This particular astrolabe is not only beautiful, it's also very rare. It's one of the only ones in existence to have Hebrew inscriptions!
4. Did you know the oldest man-made item in our collection is an astrolabe from the 12th century? At the time, it was a marvel of modern technology.
