problem: accidentally hit fast forward and then reverse in too-quick succession on this copy of astro lounge. the far end of the intro leader section of the tape got yanked off of the takeup reel and rendered the tape unusuable!

but i do have a fresh maxell 90 minute tape that conveniently has screws holding it together which means it can be easily disassembled! too bad the smash mouth tape was a typical mass manufacture one not meant to be opened! so how to fix?

simple! smash the hell out of the tape’s mouth with a hammer and also other chunks of it, to shatter apart what held it together! it’s so simple.

then after carefully taking apart the maxell tape, just toss that over out of the way with the maxell tape’s primary reel

after a lot of careful winding the main reel back up and then cutting down some of the leader, the leader section can be secured on the maxell’s takeup reel and the tape threaded through the appropriate bits at the bottom. only took half an hour of clumsily working at it. and of course make sure to label it!!

does this tape still count as an authentic retail copy of smash mouth - astro lounge? well the literal tape does!! ship of theseus yadda yadda but it plays fine.

to do: figure out what i’m going to do with these components lol. i don’t think i can really trust the fresh tape for recording anymore (or at least i don’t care to), but i’d gotten a box of like 20 of these fresh tapes at a thrift store years ago now, for a total of $4, so really this is only me being out about 20 cents’ worth of a cassette. and when you consider that i’m using most of what came with that cassette it’s even less of a loss.
