Via the second voice/layer of thought
Deep relaxation is important for many lucid dreaming and OBE techniques. How one goes about doing that is up to oneself, but I noticed that there aren’t a ton of methods out there. Most of them are a version of progressive relaxation (tense and then release each muscle group). Maybe it’s just me, but that method doesn’t relax my body at all.
This method that I found on the Astral Pulse forums is interesting and rather effective. It works by focusing on a second, more unconscious layer of thought.
Method Summary
1. Discover the second layer of thoughts by thinking of a sentence several times. Then, only say half of the sentence. The second voice/layer should automatically, and perhaps very quickly, think the other half.
2. Train the second layer by mentally counting from 1 to 100, letting the second voice/layer repeat every number.
3. Let the second voice/layer count from 1 to 100 alone. This may be tricky, since this layer is hard to control. If needed, go back to step 2.
