Inktobertale Day 17: Fathers Day
The cuties!! I don't actually know a lot about Aster and Top, but it was so fun to draw them, they have such pretty designs!!
Multiverse Madness Chapter Sixty Nine
Ink had slept throughout the entire night, which first of all, Ink never used to sleep, and second of all, he kept himself pressed completely against Dream's side like his life depended on it. Dream, taking a page out of Knife's book according to Murder, watched Ink sleep throughout the night. Aster and Top had stayed by the cell, falling asleep sitting against it, Sci had gone to work with Millianna and Reality, and Color and Swap went with him. Dream looked down at Ink as he continued to sleep, worry churning in his soul. Ink never used to sleep, or eat, so for him to sleep this long... it concerned him greatly. Dream looked up as Sci entered with a cup of coffee, eye sockets widening as he saw Ink still asleep.
"he hasn't woken up yet?" Sci questioned, surprised, and Dream shook his skull no.
"not even once." Dream whispered, looking down at Ink again, "is he in a trauma-induced coma or something? is that even possible?..."
"no, i don't believe so. i think it's just his body trying to recover. the reason for his need of sleep and food to do so, though... that puzzles me..." Sci frowned before adding, "and worries me greatly..."
"what could shattered have done to him for this to happen?..." Dream asked quietly.
"well, it's possible a number of things happened. his body usually defaults into a colorless, emotionless husk once he goes too long without his vials, but this?... i believe shattered found a way around it, and that was converting his body to rely on mortal needs. he's not mortal by any means, but he's not the same anymore. it's possible that magic was involved, but i don't have all of the details..."
"fresh mentioned his arm being carved up... could that have something to do with it?" Dream questioned.
"hmmm.... theoretically yes, if he used some form of rune to engrave it into ink's bones, which the sick bastard probably did, but i don't know for certain." Sci sighed, "and i don't know if it can be fixed, either..."
Dream's eyelights flicked down to Ink again, suppressing rage towards Shattered. He was going to make Shattered pay for what he'd done to Ink, one way or another. Dream couldn't stop himself from tensing, though, and it seemed that that was enough to wake Ink up.
"ink?" Dream asked softly.
"b'ss?..." Ink mumbled, and Dream's soul clenched.
"no, it's me, dream." Dream corrected, and Ink shifted a bit before looking up at him, eyelights dark purple and light blue, just like they had been all yesterday, alternating with purple and dark blue.
It was a relief seeing Ink's eyelights as colors and shapes again, but these weren't good colors. Purple never meant well, and while dark and light blue were mixed, Dream had a feeling they were probably more towards their negative aspects right now. He gave him a reassuring squeeze on his shoulder and a comforting smile, trying to be reassuring.
"sorry, i-" Ink started to apologize.
"ink, it's ok.." Dream soothed, "you don't need to apologize, it's ok."
Ink looked down, burying his skull against Dream's side, and Dream let him, trying to be as comforting as he could. Ink could invade personal space sometimes, but he was never downright clingy like this. Dream didn't mind it, as long as it helped Ink ground himself, but it still made him concerned. Dream soon felt some wetness seeping through his side where Ink's skull was pressed against him, his shoulders trembling slightly.
"ink?" Dream said softly, and Ink looked up at him, a few rainbow tears in his eye sockets, "it's ok, i promise you that."
"i- i kn-know, i just.... you're n-not him, i-" Ink started to shake.
"ink, hey hey hey, it's ok... i know, i know, it's ok." Dream held him closer, but gently, "i know. you're not used to him not being around. it's ok. i know you don't think we're similar, it's ok..."
Ink trembled a little bit more before curling up against his side again.
"ink, did he used to get upset when you thought we were similar?" Dream asked softly, "you don't have to answer if you don't want to."
Ink hesitated before mumbling, "y-yeah... h-he umm... he was n-never happy... i th-think he messed with m-my head so i-i wouldn't..."
Dream took a deep breath, trying to keep his anger suppressed and from showing. He didn't want to scare Ink; that was the last thing he wanted right now. So that meant he had to be calm... no matter how much he wanted to let his anger out.
"i'm so sorry, ink...." Dream whispered, trying to be as reassuring and soothing as he could.
"i-it's ok, he was right..." Ink mumbled, "y-you're n-nothing alike..."
Dream smiled a little at that, "thank you... ink, do you know why you need to sleep now?..."
Ink shrugged a little, "i think boss did something?..."
"you don't have to keep calling him that, ink. he's not in control of you anymore.." Dream reminded.
"i know, i just... i can't, i..." Ink started to tremble a bit again.
"hey, hey it's ok." Dream quickly reassured, "it's ok. if you feel like you need to, you can for now, but you don't have to. he's not listening, he's not watching, and he's not here. he's gone, ink. i promise you that. you're safe, and he's never getting to you again."
Ink stayed quiet after that, just trembling and shaking ever so slightly to where his bones were still rattling. Dream could barely stand seeing him like this. This terrified and on edge... They'd barely even given Ink any of his light blue and purple paints, and yet they were somehow in the forefront of everything else. He could sense sadness from next to the cell too, Aster and Top awake now and looking in at them, watching Ink in concern.
"dream?" Reality called out from around the corner, Dream looking up at him, "can i talk with you?"
Dream looked down at Ink, and he hesitated.
"We can stay with Ink." Top said, "Dream, you can talk with your brother, don't worry about Ink- too much, anyways... We've got him. If he's ready, of course."
Dream looked down at Ink, asking softly, "ink?"
Ink nodded a little, and he detached himself from Dream's side, allowing him to get up. Dream teleported out of the cell while Aster and Top went in, Dream watching as Ink pushed himself up with some pain, hugging them both, a gesture they quickly returned. Dream was happy that Top and Aster could finally be with Ink again, knowing how much they'd been desperate to be, and he walked away from the containment cells and around the corner Reality had peeked around from.
"wha-" Dream started to ask, only for Reality to embrace him tightly.
"you're not the only empath, you know." Reality muttered as Dream hugged him back, "i could sense your rage from the other side of the lab."
"s-sorry-" Dream apologized, only able to imagine how that must have felt.
"nope. ink isn't allowed to apologize for what that thing did to him and had him doing, and you aren't allowed to apologize for your own emotions. it's understandable, brother. believe me, it is. he's one of your best friends, and shattered completely and utterly broke him. you're more than allowed to be pissed off. it means you care." Reality told him seriously, "so go ahead, do whatever. cry, scream, punch something- i know you don't kill but if you feel the need to-"
"no!" Dream exclaimed, "i'm never doing that! not even to shattered."
Even though the idea was slightly tempting at the moment.
"alright, just offering." Reality chuckled a little, ". . . hey, seriously though. whatever you feel the need to do, go ahead and do it. get some of that anger out of your system, ok?"
"i know, i will.." Dream sighed, "what i want right now is shattered gone... . . . are you sure you can handle him on your own?"
"of course." Reality nodded, "and you can handle nightmare. you have friends, and i'll probably meet some people who'll help me, too. . . . probably."
"you will, i'm sure of it... i just don't want to lose you yet..." Dream admitted.
"and you won't; not permanently. i'm sure we'll meet again at some point." Reality told him.
"i hope so..." Dream mumbled.
". . . speaking of, we figured the rift out last night. sci was able to analyze it and figure out exactly where to crack it to send me and shattered back." Reality smirked.
"really?!" Dream gasped.
"yup!" Reality grinned, "now all we need to do is lure him out to make sure we can get him through that portal once it opens..."
"i know murder is really good at strategizing, maybe we could bring him here?" Dream suggested.
"yeah, knife is probably still hanging out with him." Reality nodded, pulling away from the hug to hold Dream's shoulders, ". . . you're sure they're not in a relationship?"
"i'm sure." Dream verified.
". . ."
". . ."
". . ."
"i'm sure!" Dream sighed, "i hope..."
"what's going on?" Color asked, walking around the corner.
"praying that knife and murder aren't a thing." Reality answered.
"oh!" Color laughed a bit, "no, they definitely aren't-" His phone pinged, and he said, "sorry, one second." Color unlocked his phone, tapping on a few things before his eye socket went wide, "what the hell?!"
"what?!" Dream questioned, alarmed.
Color showed them both his phone, their jaws dropping. It was Knife, with a panicked look on his face angling his camera up and down at himself, where Murder's skull was partially on his chest, his arm around his waist, and Knife's hand squished between his arm and ribcage. Dream was completely and utterly shocked, and Reality gave him a look that screamed, 'are you sure?!'.
Color turned his phone back towards himself, tapping a few buttons. It rang once before Knife answered, whisper-shouting, "shhhh! he's still asleep!"
"how the hell did that happen?" Color questioned quietly as Dream and Reality teleported behind him, seeing it was a video call.
"we talked in the park, he fell asleep on me, i carried him back to story's, i couldn't move my hand-" Knife wiggled his trapped fingers for emphasis, "-and then i got stuck here by this clingy, moody emo! i can't move!"
"oh my god..." Reality snickered.
"not funny! once he wakes up he's gonna blame me for this!" Knife hissed lowly, Murder stirring slightly, pressing his face against Knife's chest, "oh my god is he adorable right now, but seriously, how do i get out of this?"
"uh.. wake him up?" Reality suggested.
"i would, but he said he hasn't slept in two days, and the clozapine is kicking his coccyx." Knife whispered, "come on, he's been here all night and i don't need anyone seeing this and getting pictures or murder will kill me."
"you sent color a picture." Dream mentioned.
"to ask for help with proof i wasn't lying! i know i'm the untrustworthy one!" Knife whisper-shouted, "and murder doesn't mind color! he just doesn't want anyone getting blackmail! or for this to reach famine!"
"yeah, that would be a small problem..." Color winced.
"yeah, no kidding, so help." Knife pleaded.
Murder shifted a little bit again, mumbling quietly under his breath before snoring a little, Knife's cheekbones flushed dark gray, which was a rare sight.
"umm.... i think you're trapped, buddy.." Color informed sympathetically.
"yeah, no crap, look!" Knife whisper-screamed, and he angled his camera down over himself.
Murder's arm was around Knife's waist, and one of his legs was hooked over both of Knife's and his foot was dangling slightly off of the couch. Oh, so that's why Knife was blushing... Dream's jaw dropped again, shocked at the scene, and Knife angled his phone back up to himself.
"i feel like i giant body pillow." Knife whispered, ". . . on second thought can you just text everyone else to not come downstairs?"
"knife!" Color scolded quietly, Knife snickering a bit, "why haven't you tried blue magic?"
"you think this is the first time i've gotten murder to fall asleep? doomscrolling through undertumblr and his meds are the ultimate melatonin for this guy. he's fallen asleep on me quite a few times, and i usually have to either carry him here or get him off of me. blue magic wakes him up and gets me stabbed, teleporting wakes him up, walking too loud gets me- and him flung into something when he uses blue magic on me, and don't even get me started on trying to cover him with a blanket." Knife listed.
The fact that Knife knew all of this from experience was... honestly really sweet. Color seemed to think so, too, based on the smile on his face.
"are you sure waking him up is a bad option?" Color questioned.
"yeah, because again, he would blame me, but if he moves anymore he will be on top of me and that wouldn't help anyone." Knife responded lowly, "should i just pretend to be asleep and hope he moves off of me or wakes up first?"
At that moment, the stairs creaked, Knife looking up and giving a firm glare to someone as they started laughing quietly. The phone angled up to reveal Stretch, looking shocked and astounded, holding his hands over his mouth as he tried to muffle his laughter.
"stretch, shut the hell up and go back up there!" Knife ordered quietly, as Stretch got out his phone, "no- no do not take pictures! go on! get!"
"he's not a dog, buddy..." Color sighed, fighting down a laugh by the looks of it.
"i don't care. murder's sleeping on me and the oversized carrot is gonna ruin it by waking him up." Knife hissed, Color and Reality both wheezing, "shhh!"
Murder stirred again, Dream watching with baited breath as Murder pressed his skull against Knife's neck, and yup, his cheekbones were pitch black right now; Dream couldn't even see the Broken Determination. Reality took out his phone, took a picture of Knife's screen, and walked off. He barely rounded the corner before he burst out laughing. Stretch went back upstairs after pressing his pointer fingers together a few times, before snickering and going back upstairs.
Color was wheezing so much he looked like he could barely stand up, his free hand held tightly over his mouth while Dream looked between Knife and Color in confusion. What did that gesture mean?...
Knife looked back at his phone, cheekbones not lightening even slightly, and he whispered, "i am so dead.."
Color couldn't respond, still wheezing from earlier, and Murder stirred again. Then, his eye sockets cracked open, and Dream saw Knife's face become one of 'uh oh'. Murder's eye sockets went wide, and he pulled away from Knife, cheekbones dark blue.
"hey, uh... good morning?" Knife attempted, cheekbones not lightening even slightly.
Murder flung himself back from Knife with a squeaked, "how long have i been like that?!"
"all night! you wouldn't let me have my hand back after i carried you back here, أحمق!" Knife responded, and he mumbled, "أنا لست مستاءة تمامًا من ذلك، فأنت تبدو رائعًا عندما تكون نائمًا، ولكن مع ذلك!"
Color started laughing quietly, Murder yelping, "wait, did you seriously call-?!"
"i was calling him to see if he could help me get out from under you without waking you up, relax!" Knife reassured.
"did anyone else see that?!" Murder demanded.
"ummm... hey color, i'm gonna call you back, maybe. otherwise i'll bring murder by-" "knife?!" "-yeah, see ya!"
The call disconnected, and Dream burst out laughing, Color soon to follow. Reality was still laughing from around the corner, as well. It took a few moments for the laughter to settle, Dream's mood having slightly improved, but the anger was still more than present. As much as he didn't want to lose Reality or leave him to fight Shattered alone in his multiverse, he also knew that they didn't have much of a choice.
Shattered and Nightmare working together was too much of a threat to face, no matter how many allies they found. They needed to even the playing field, and with Shattered back in his multiverse with none of his allies, that gave Reality a better chance. There would always be someone to fight for evil, like there would always be someone to fight against it. Shattered may find help in his multiverse again, but so would Reality, and hopefully Reality's allies would be good at protecting and helping him.
If they found where the Rift would need to be broken in order to send them both back, that meant that they could even the playing fields a bit, and they could do so soon. Ink needed to be safe; he needed Shattered gone in order to even leave this place or trust himself again, and Dream was going to ensure that that happened. Ink may have lied to him throughout their friendship, but he didn't deserve what happened to him, and once Shattered was gone, Dream would try rebuilding their friendship with more honesty this time, or at least attempt it. Dream would never stop caring about him, that's something that wouldn't change, but as for the state of their friendship... they would both need to put in effort in order to move past it.
"oh my god..." Reality snickered as he walked back around the corner, wiping tears from his eye sockets, teal from his left and purple from his right, "that... that was amazing..."
"yeah, tell me about it.." Color snickered, "murder is never living that down. once the shock wears off knife will tease him about it forever."
". . . we're sure there's nothing serious between them?" Reality asked again.
"oh my god..." Dream sighed.
"yes, we're sure." Color verified.
Knife and Murder appeared a moment later, Murder's cheekbones dark blue while Knife's were still black, and he was doubled over wheezing when he appeared, a hand on Murder's shoulder to steady himself. Murder pushed him away, cheekbones not losing any color, and Reality was starting to laugh again.
"m-murder, you ok, buddy?" Color asked, trying to suppress his own laughter.
". . . i am never sleeping again." Murder declared, Knife laughing even harder.
"doubt!" Knife cackled, Murder punching him in the side of his ribcage, "come on, you can't blame me for that!! you're the cuddle-bird here, murdy birdy!"
"shut the [funk] up!!" Murder snapped, "oh god [dang]it!!"
"sup broskis!" Fresh greeted, poking his skull around a corner, "what'd i miss?"
"murder and knife being gay." Reality smirked.
"ah, cool-" Fresh went back around the corner before realization hit, and his skull was back around the corner, glasses reading 'WHA T?!', "wait, what da heck?!"
"reality!!" Murder snapped, Reality wheezing.
"sorry, sorry, i couldn't help myself!" Reality laughed, teleporting out of the way as Murder pounced at him.
"we are not-!" Murder started to shout.
"guys, keep your voices down, please!" Dream interjected, sensing Ink getting more on edge.
"sorry." Reality apologized, quieter.
"wait, wut happened?" Fresh questioned.
"we got ink back, he's a mess, and dream is contemplating murder." Reality summarized.
"huh?" Murder looked up at the sound of his name, making Knife snicker, and then he processed the rest of the sentence, "wait, what?!"
"i am not contemplating killing him!" Dream snapped.
Fresh's glasses changed to 'OM G!' and Dream sighed, pinching the bridge of his nasal cavity.
". . . are you sure?" Knife questioned, "i'll help you hide the remains."
"if shattered died, i would die." Reality deadpanned.
Knife walked over to him, putting a hand on his shoulder, and saying, "welp, it was nice knowin' ya, buddy."
"[funk] you, knife." Reality responded.
". . . anyone smell vodka?" Murder asked out of nowhere, Dream looking at him in confusion.
"it's vinegar." Knife said.
". . . what?" Murder questioned.
"it's vinegar, -" A meow sound came from Knife when he tried finishing the sentence, and he paused, before grinning.
"oh dear god..." Murder gasped in horror.
"knife, don't-!" Color started, but then Knife kept repeatedly trying to say the word with a grin on his face, meowing sounds filling the area.
"BRAH!!!" Fresh yelped as Knife started laughing, continuing to meow through hysterics.
"맙소사, 진짜 씨발 뭐야..." Murder muttered, shaking his skull.
"murder! come on! meow with me!" Knife begged.
"absolutely not!" Murder snapped.
"do it and i'll shut up." Knife proposed, "another alternative to-"
"hey! no!" Murder cut him off, covering Knife's mouth with his hand as he snickered, muffled meows coming from him. "fine!" Murder relented, and a meowing sound exited from his mouth, Knife secretly recording him.
Once Murder noticed the phone, his eyelights turned red and cyan, and Knife took off running as Murder chased after him, swearing at him.
Everyone was just left in stunned silence after that, Reality breaking it a minute later by asking, "dream, are you sure-?"
"don't." Dream sighed, Reality snickering a bit.
Knife eventually ran back towards them, Color teleporting between Murder and Knife to break up the fight, Dream shaking his skull with a small smile on his face at their antics.
"seriously though, i smell vodka." Murder stated, and as Knife opened his mouth, Murder cut him off, "do not." Knife pouted in response, looking away with a huff, and Murder started walking down a hallway.
Dream, curious, followed him, so did Knife, Color, and Reality. Dream still wanted to strategize a plan, but everything was too chaotic right now, and to be honest... Dream wanted to figure out where Murder smelled the vodka from.
Knife teleported to walk next to Murder, questioning, "are you sure it's not some kinda... i dunno, hallucinated smell?"
"is that even possible?" Murder asked.
"i dunno, probably?" Knife shrugged.
They rounded a corner, entering the break room, which contained some tables, chairs, and vending machines, Swap sitting at one of the tables with a thermos and a bag of Doritos. Dream smelled alcohol a little bit, and Knife snorted.
"that explains it. hey swap." Knife waved.
"HELLO! UH... EXPLAINS WHAT?" Swap questioned, confused.
"murder smelled vodka, and i figured it was you." Knife mentioned, Swap looking off to the side.
"wait, swap, you drink?" Dream asked.
"I UMM... SOMETIMES..." Swap admitted.
"you didn't know?" Murder questioned.
"you did?" Dream countered.
"yeah, i uh... i figured it out a while back." Murder admitted, Color and Knife nodding.
"brother?" Dream asked, looking over at Reality, hoping he wasn't the only one who didn't know about this.
"i didn't know." Reality responded, "swap, you know that stuff's horrible for you, right?"
"I KNOW, I JUST... I DON'T DRINK IT ALL THE TIME, JUST OCCASIONALLY..." Swap mumbled.
"you're one lucky son of a [beach], you know that right?" Murder said.
"jealous, murds?~" Knife teased.
"zip it." Murder hissed, glaring at him.
"make me." Knife grinned.
"nope!" Color teleported between them, "not having another soul attack today. nope."
Dream sighed, pinching the bridge of his nasal cavity, "alright, swap, can we at least talk about it later?"
"OK..." Swap mumbled.
"thank you." Dream sighed in relief, "alright, look... i'm going to ask sci if i can call a meeting here; get all of our allies here and see what we can come up with. reality told me that a location on the rift is known to where, when cracked in a specific spot, will open a portal that can send shattered and reality back to their multiverse. we agreed on doing this, and as much as i dislike it... i know there's not really any other options."
"i'm the one that suggested it. those things working together here are too much of a problem, we need to split them up and even the playing fields, not to mention keeping ink safe. the amount of negativity coming off of him is..." Reality grimaced, "it's not good."
"so how come we haven't cracked the rift and sent him on his way already?" Murder questioned.
"because the rift only opens the portal, it doesn't guarantee that shattered will go through, since something else could come through." Reality explained.
"so we need a plan to lure them out..." Murder muttered, and Dream nodded.
"exactly." Dream confirmed, "i'm gonna go talk with sci; see if he's alright with us having the meeting here, and i'll text core to see if they can bring the others here from the omega timeline, and i'll text the others to see if they can help."
"i was actually coming to ask you if you wanted to call them to tell them we got ink back." Sci said as he walked around the corner, heading to the coffee maker, "sending shattered back to his multiverse would fix a multitude of problems, and i'm certain shattered has at least one enemy that reality can ally himself with."
"kinda what i'm hoping for." Reality told him, "i can handle shattered i think, i just need to find some help over there before shattered can recruit anyone."
"if you ever return to this multiverse- which i assume you'll find a method of doing so, inform me of the other multiverse? i would love to learn about it." Sci requested, filling up his cup.
"sure thing." Reality agreed, "millianna agree to sleep yet?"
"unfortunately not, she's still monitoring readings from the rift." Sci sighed, filling up a second cup with cats on it, "she's very stubborn, and if i don't bring her coffee, she'll just invent a coffee teleporter of some kind."
"is that even possible?" Reality asked.
"i'd prefer not to find out." Sci chuckled, grabbing both cups and starting to walk back the way he came, "oh, and if it isn't too much to ask... get your brother to promise to take a break; you're the only one he'll likely listen to."
"i don't need a-" Dream started.
"dream." Reality cut him off, "no."
". . . murder the chloroform is still on the table." Knife whispered.
"no, i doubt it would work." Murder muttered back.
"buddy, we talked about this. no drugging stubborn people when they don't want to sleep." Color sighed, pinching the bridge of his nasal cavity.
". . . hey dream you look kinda pale, you want some nyquil?" Knife offered.
"no?" Dream declined.
"again, same issue. no drugging people to get them to sleep." Color groaned.
"YES, THAT... IS NOT A GOOD OPTION..." Swap agreed with Color.
"he might actually be onto something..." Reality muttered, nodding his skull at Knife.
"brother!" Dream exclaimed in betrayal.
"hey, it might be necessary in your case!" Reality defended his reasoning.
Dream just sighed, and he pulled out his phone, slowly but hopefully correctly typing out a few texts to Core, Error, Abyss, Reaper, Epic, Delta, and Player. Then, the wait was on...
Fifteen minutes later, everyone was gathered in a large break room in Sci's lab, the Bad Time Trio standing next to Delta, Epic, Abyss, Swap, and Player, Reaper off to the side away from everyone. Core was standing by Color, Red, Knife, and Murder, Fresh between them and Reaper, and Dream, Reality, Sci, and Millianna were at the center of everyone, facing them. The Alphys was wearing a white lab coat with a black belt, a few gadgets and fidget toys on it, and she had a small scar on the top left of her forehead, like something had been implanted there but had been gone for quite some time. She had some charts clutched in her hands, and she was standing a few feet away from Dream and Reality, Sci staying by her. Abyss was uneasy being here, not a big fan of labs from what Dream could sense, but hopefully this wouldn't take too long... Error still hadn't shown up, and Dream honestly didn't think he was going to.
"so ink is alright, right?" Reaper spoke up after a while, breaking the small silence that had fallen over the room while Dream tried to get everything straight in his head for what he wanted to say.
"he's free from shattered, yes." Dream nodded, "but his mental state... isn't the best. top and aster are staying with him right now, but he's been...." Dream trailed off, trying to figure out a way to gently put it.
"a wreck?" Red supplied.
"yes..." Dream sighed, some anger that had momentarily faded returning to build up to what hadn't dulled for even a moment, "shattered needs to pay for what he did to ink, and he needs to pay now."
"I agree. Considering what Shattered must've done to him, the sooner he's gone, the sooner Ink can start recovering." Player nodded.
"did he say anythin' 'bout that [funk]ing [ash]hole's plans?" Red asked, shooting a glare at Fresh for censoring him.
"he hasn't said anything yet. i'm not sure how much he knew or how much he remembers, or if he's just terrified into silence." Dream answered, hands clenching into fists as he remembered the raw fear Dream had and still sensed coming from him in waves.
"either way, shattered messed him up, and he needs to pay for it." Sci stated, "millianna, would you please tell them what we found from the rift? you did find the anomaly."
"Oh, r-right!" Millianna looked down at and sorted through her notes, clearing her throat before saying, "Well, last night we found a crack in the rift that Error had given Dream, and upon doing s-several readings and comparisons in regards to multiverse data, we found a precise point to crack the Rift at that would open a portal to send Shattered and Reality back to their multiverse."
"you're leaving?" Abyss questioned, and Dream could sense some sadness coming from him.
"yeah, i wish i didn't have to, but it's the only way. shattered needs to be sent back to our multiverse, and as much as i'd like to stay here, someone needs to stop that thing. i'll try finding a way to visit, though, and don't lose hope if it takes a while."
". . . you need to tell me about everything you find in that other multiverse." Abyss told him.
"of course." Reality reassured, "sci asked me for the same thing. we could probably meet up and exchange notes on stuff?"
"i'm holding you to that." Abyss said, and Reality nodded, smirking a bit.
Dream smiled a little, happy that his brother had managed to make friends here, even if they unfortunately had to part ways for a while, but Dream knew Reality would be back. He had to be...
"so what's our plan?" Stretch questioned, "or is there already one and this is the goodbye?"
"no, it's not just the goodbye." Dream replied, "we need to lure shattered out to a fight so we can use the rift to send him back, we just don't know how."
"well, shattered is gonna be [hiss]ed about ink, right?" Delta asked.
"he definitely won't be happy..." Dream sighed.
"it shouldn't be too hard to lure him out, then. the second you leave this au, he's gonna be after you." Delta said.
"yeah, but he might also be trying to find a way here. we have no idea who's working with him or if they can get in here; i'm not comfortable with just luring him out while his team could potentially find a way here..." Dream responded.
"so we leave guards." Story said, "Top and Aster will defend Ink, not to mention Sci and Millianna have access to the Lab and it's defenses."
"yeah, defenses in labs can be pains to deal with." Murder agreed.
"i second that." Knife supplied.
"REBEL AND RENEGADE MIGHT ALSO BE OPEN TO KEEPING WATCH? THEY WERE TRAINED ROYAL GUARDS LIKE I WAS, AND MIGHT BE FIT FOR THE JOB." Swap suggested.
"and you could stay with them, good plan." Stretch nodded.
"I NEVER SAID ALL THAT. I'M HELPING FIGHT, TOO." Swap told him.
"if this ends in a massive fight, i don't want you anywhere near it." Stretch said, arms crossed, and Swap became much more irritated.
"I'M GOING TO BE THERE ANYWAYS." Swap crossed his arms as well.
"bl-" Stretch started, "swap-"
"I AM NOT HIM." Swap spoke up, voice firm "I'M NOT YOUR BROTHER, STRETCH. I'M A VERSION OF HIM, BUT I'M NOT HIM. YOU ALWAYS LOOK AT ME LIKE I'M GOING TO TURN TO DUST IN AN INSTANT, AND I'M TIRED OF IT! SO NO, I'M NOT SITTING THIS OUT, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TOLERATE YOU ACTING LIKE I CAN'T DEFEND MYSELF! I DEFENDED MYSELF WHEN MY AU UNDERWENT THAT SIEGE AND I LIVED WHILE YOU DIDN'T! AND THEN I HELPED DREAM FIGHT NIGHTMARE THERE! NOT TO MENTION THE FACT THAT I'M OLDER THAN YOU, SO IF ANYTHING, YOU CAN SIT THIS OUT, LITTLE BROTHER!"
Dream, and everyone else for that matter, was left in stunned shock, mouths agape. Blue used to occasionally tell people off, and granted it didn't happen often, it did happen. The first time had been a shock to everyone, and Dream hadn't felt taken aback like that in a while, until now, at least.
Swap took a few breaths, calming himself down, before saying, "I WILL BE WHEREVER THE FIGHT IS, WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT. YOU CAN'T STOP ME, OR TALK ME OUT OF IT."
Swap walked out of the room after that, closing the door behind him, and everyone exchanged glances, trying to comprehend what just happened.
". . . well, i was wondering when that would happen..." Knife muttered.
"tell me about it..." Murder agreed quietly.
"heh, go swap." Red smirked.
Story looked up at Stretch, brow furrowing slightly before asking, "Stretch, are you ok?"
"yeah.... yeah i'm fine.." Stretch sighed, looking down, "he... he's right. he was right. i umm... i just need a minute.."
Stretch excused himself, leaving the room, and Karma and Story both exchanged looks before following after him. Dream wanted to go talk to both of them, to check on them and see if they were ok, but he knew they had to get this settled before he could do that. They needed a plan.
"What do you think would lure Shattered and his team out? How could we single-handedly [hiss] off all of the Darks?" Player asked, looking at the remaining occupants of the room.
"Isn't that something that's typically good to avoid doing?" Core questioned.
"Yes, usually, but we need them in one spot, guaranteed to eliminate the risk to things here, or at least reduce it." Player responded, "So, what's one AU we could go to to get them upset? Is there a negative AU we can make happy?"
And that's when it hit him.
". . . oh my god... i know what to do..." Dream realized, "it might be stupid, insane and crazy, but it might just work.."
"what is it?" Reality asked.
"the most negative aus in the multiverse. if we one by one systematically spread positivity to them, either by curing famines, ending genocide loops, tearing down barriers, overthrowing tyrannists, dictators and evil leaders, curing plagues- if we ended the massive flows of terror, anger, hatred, etc., we would effectively have shattered and nightmare out for us, and they would send everything they have at us." Dream explained.
"that... yeah, that would do it, bruh." Epic agreed, "they'd be out for our heads."
"they could probably reverse the changes, unfortunately, but they would want to stop us first." Dream said, "and we would have the rift to use against shattered."
"and if he doesn't get sucked through it once it opens, i will make him go through it." Reality cracked his knuckles.
"they're gonna be [hiss]ed..." Abyss muttered, "but it'd be nice seeing them upset for once. it never gets old getting cross upset."
"Yeah, he's got that much coming for his Overwriting." Player nodded, "Geno would probably want in on that fight, too. He wants payback."
"yeah, karma's gonna be a [beach]!" Knife snickered, "and i don't mean the sans!"
"why are y'all cussin' so much?" Fresh frowned, 'BR UH' displayed on his glasses.
"because we can because you're here to censor us." Knife smirked.
"of course..." Fresh sighed.
"at least he's not meowing anymore." Murder muttered, and Knife's face lit up, "no! don't start!"
"WHY WOULD YA MENTION DAT, BRAH?!" Fresh exclaimed.
"because i'm an idiot!!" Murder responded as Knife started meowing again from Fresh's magic.
"guys!" Reality snapped, Knife pausing mid-word, "this is serious!"
". . . wonder pets!" Knife grinned.
"oh my god..." Color groaned, facepalming.
"sorry, but the nostalgia!" Knife exclaimed.
"how does he even know what that is?" Delta questioned.
"it was on at a hospital i took knife to once." Color sighed.
". . . makes sense." Red huffed.
". . . guys!" Reality was exasperated, and Knife was snickering.
"sorry, sorry... this is sewious." Knife giggled, hands over his mouth.
"oh that's it!" Murder snapped, Knife yelping as Murder tried tackling him, and Knife took off out of the room, Murder chasing him.
"is that just them running off to go make out?" Sci questioned.
"WHAT?!" Reaper, Abyss, Delta, Epic, and Millianna yelled.
". . . Yaoi?" Millianna asked quietly.
"yaoi." Sci confirmed.
"they're not a serious thing.." Dream sighed, not sure how many times he would need to repeat himself.
"are you sure?!" Reality questioned, Dream nodding.
"that actually explains a lot. i saw knife carrying murder back from the park last night." Epic mumbled.
"i saw that like a week ago too. then when i went to say something, knife just gave me a death glare, mouthed 'be quiet', and kept walking." Delta added.
"murder's gonna be [hiss]ed when he finds out that we've had access to another house for a while now, and knife has insisted on staying at story's house. he said the only way he's leaving is if murder comes with." Color sighed.
". . ."
Reality turned to look at Dream, and he asked again, "are you sure, dream?"
". . . i was..." Dream replied, and him, Reality, and Color all took off out of the room, just in time to see Murder firing a Gaster Blaster at a laughing Knife outside through a window.

Multiverse Madness Chapter Sixty Eight
Ink's eye sockets cracked open, and the first thing he was aware of was the sheer agony in his skull and the ache in his entire body. He didn't feel... empty anymore- like he- His eye sockets widened completely, pure panic seizing his nonexistent soul. He had emotions, meaning he'd drank his vials at some point, be it by force or willingly, Ink couldn't remember, but he still had emotions.
Boss was going to kill him for sure, and granted Ink was immortal, Boss would make good on his promise of making Ink wish that he was dead. Ink looked around for any signs of where he was, seeing clear walls in front of him, paired with sterile white floors and more walls past them, and after a moment of looking around, he recognized this place. Sci's lab.
Ink tried remembering how he had ended up here, and despite the pain in his head, like something had been ripped out of his skull like the pulp of a pumpkin and a scraper had been used to scrape the remains out with it, leaving the area raw and bloody. Ink coughed a bit, black liquid he assumed was blood coming out into his hand. Coughing made him aware of another source of pain, Ink looking down at his chest to find his clothes soaked with his own black paint blood, and he vaguely remembered Knife stabbing him, the feeling of his ribs being sliced open dulled down like everything else had been.
The amount of stimulation he was receiving all at once was starting to get to be too much. The dungeon had been dark, but this was too bright; too vivid, and it was making him nauseous and feel blinded. The pain was still excruciating, inside and out, making even the slightest movements immediately regrettable, and closing his eye sockets to block out the light didn't work, because that just made him more aware of the rest of the pain he was in. Everything was loud, too; the normally quiet whirs of machinery graining on his nonexistent ears, worsening his already horrendous headache, and Ink had no ways to block it out.
Normally the loudest thing he heard was Boss's voice- at least, that's what had become normal, but the absence of it had left even his thoughts feel like he was screaming inside, and maybe he was. He knew he wasn't out loud, not with how raw his throat felt, like something vile and white hot had surged out of him, leaving him unable to even whisper without regretting it. Maybe they'd caught him while Boss was torturing him, and that was why it hurt so much?... He didn't feel like he deserved the pain Boss put him through anymore, but emotions didn't allow him to think clearly, right?... Wait, no, he could still think, despite how much it hurt right now, he just wasn't thinking the way he wanted him to- wait, no, don't think like that, he could still be listening....
Boss? Are you listening?.... Am I in trouble?....
No response.
Was he gone?.... Boss?... Are you there?
It was possible he could be trying to lull Ink into a false sense of privacy or security, and once his guard was down, he would reveal himself... Ink trusted Boss a lot less, now, he was noticing. Why had he trusted him so much before?... Ink couldn't figure it out, he just knew his head hurt, and everything hurt, and he just wanted it to stop. If he was in Sci's lab, Sci was probably there with the others, if they even wanted to see him or hated him after everything, and he wouldn't blame them... Not after everything Boss had him doing....
Ink took a deep breath before starting to try and push himself up, agony shooting up his left arm that made him bite back a scream, and he got a few inches off of the floor before he fell back against it. He looked up at the ceiling of this cell blearily, trying to get his strength up to at least sit up. He started only using his right arm, which didn't hurt nearly as much, and despite his body screaming in protest, he managed to sit up, taking a hoarse, shuddering breath, gasping quietly from pain as he sat slumped over slightly in the center of the cell. He looked around again, slowly to avoid getting too dizzy, which almost happened when his eyelights darted around.
He blinked, feeling paint bubbling up in his throat as he almost vomited, but he swallowed it down, shivering. He tried again, slower, and he saw no one there, despite hearing them distantly talking. He opened his mouth, but paused, wondering if they would even want to talk to him right now, much less be around him. That's probably why he was in here; as a punishment for what he'd done under Boss's command.
Still... he at least wanted to try and offer some form of apology, even if that wouldn't make up for everything, even if it wouldn't make the pain stop. Part of him felt like he deserved all of this, after everything. After everyone he'd killed and tortured... The Underfell Undyne who tried getting through to him, the other version of Blue-
Ink couldn't keep the paint down, the liquid rushing through his raw throat, spilling out onto his lap and the floor of his cell, and he shuddered, his throat growing more painful before lessening slightly as the paint coated it, but the mental pain still persisted. How could he have done that?... Ink wasn't sure if he wanted the others to come talk to him now, if he could even look them in the eye sockets after everything he'd said and done. He was a monster... and not just in one way.
Ink mustered some effort to press himself against one of the clear walls of the cell, wincing as his back hit it no matter how gentle and slow he tried to move, and he shuddered again from the pain. He slowly, shakily moved his arms to hug his knees to his chest, despite how much the movement hurt. He just wanted to curl up into a small ball and vanish forever. He felt tears forming in his eye sockets, the rainbow colors- not dull gray -spilling down his cheekbones as he choked back a sob, burying his skull in his knees and squeezing his eye sockets shut as he trembled.
He silently cried for... he wasn't sure how long, everything just a whirlwind of pain, sadness, grief, and so many other emotions he hadn't felt in so long that he wasn't able to properly name right now. Once he finally ran out of tears, he lifted his skull from his knees, albeit slowly again, and he looked around, seeing no one there still. Would they even want to know if he was awake?... Ink wasn't sure if they would or should care, or if he could even talk loud enough to alert them he was awake.
He blinked back a few more tears as they formed, not having the strength or resistance to the pain to attempt rubbing them away, and he sat there, curled up on the floor, trying to disappear. He heard two pairs of footsteps approaching, both familiar, with one light and measured and the other one a bit louder and slightly less measured but still in sync with the other pair. He looked up with shaky eyelights, guilt pooling in him as he saw his adopted parents round the corner, their eye sockets widening upon seeing him, and he fought the urge to avert his eyelights. He remembered attacking them, or at least trying to...
It made him have to fight down the urge to throw up again.
"Ink!" Top exclaimed, running over to him, and Ink winced at the volume, feeling his headache spike. Aster was soon to follow, Top going over to the control panel, muttering to himself, "How did Sci explain to open this, again?..."
Panic shot through Ink, and he yelped, albeit hoarsely and quietly, "d-don't!"
Top turned to look at him in confusion and concern, asking, "Don't? Ink, why not? It was only just in case you tried bolting when you woke up."
Stars did Ink want to, but he didn't have the strength to do so, and he knew if he left this AU, Boss would find him again. Ink shuddered at the thought, curling in on himself a bit further.
"Ink? What's wrong?" Aster asked softly, crouching down by the cell, a hand on one of the clear walls.
"i-i don't wa-ant to h-hurt y-you..." Ink whispered, and Aster's expression softened.
"Ink, I assure you, you would never hurt us." Aster told him, "He's gone, Ink. You're safe here, and you would never harm us on your own volition. It's ok. Come on, let down your walls."
Ink smiled slightly at the attempted joke, but it didn't last long, Ink looking back down at the floor of his cell again, and Aster seemed to notice the abundance of black paint around him.
"Oh my... Are you ok?" Aster questioned.
There were so many responses to that, none of them very good, and Ink shrugged a bit, unsure of which one to use before settling for whispering, "i-i just remembered s-some stuff i d-did..."
"Ink, you didn't do anything, alright?" Aster told him, "What happened was his doing. He made you do those things. You're not in any way responsible for what happened."
Ink hadn't been expecting that, looking up at him in confusion as a few tears pricked at his eye sockets, and he asked, "wh-what?..."
"Ink, we would never blame you for what happened. Everyone has been worried sick about you, especially Dream.. Top? Can you go tell them that Ink's awake, please?"
"But.." Top started, before relenting, "Alright, just... am I opening the cell?"
Ink shook his skull no again, still reluctant, and Top sighed sadly before running around the corner, likely to go get the others.
"Ink, be honest with me, please... Are you ok?" Aster asked, sitting down next to the containment chamber, his hand still unmoving from where he'd first placed it.
Ink shrugged a little, before whispering, "it h-hurts..."
"I know it does, son, I am so sorry..." Aster murmured, "Maybe Dream can use some healing magic-" Ink flinched so hard he gasped, a sharp pain going through his body, "- Or no, not that. No magic. Sci has some healing potions lying around here somewhere, I'm sure you can use all you need."
Ink shook his skull no again, mumbling, "i-i don't d-deserve it..."
"Of course you do!" Aster exclaimed, Ink wincing from the volume, and Aster gave him an apologetic look before lowering his tone, "Of course you do, Ink. No one here blames you for anything that happened, I can assure you of that. Don't give him the satisfaction of blaming yourself for the actions he forced you to take."
"i-i still-" Ink started, but Aster shook his skull no.
"Ink, no. It's ok. None of this is your fault." Aster reassured, and Ink looked up as Top ran back into the room, followed by Sci, Color, Knife, and Dream.
When Ink saw Dream, it was like he'd been stabbed in his nonexistent soul by a serrated blade in several places. Or maybe tortured by Boss again, he wasn't sure what would hurt worse. He felt tears building in his eye sockets again, quickly spilling out, and Dream looked... he looked like a kicked puppy, and Ink hated that face. He especially hated that it was directed at him.
"Please try and keep your voices down, I think he's dealing with a sensory overload of some kind." Aster advised, Ink feeling thankful for him being so considerate.
Dream took a step forward, and Ink pressed himself more firmly against the wall behind him, memories flashing through his mind of all the times he'd attacked Dream; all the awful things he said.... Ink felt his own self-loathing grow, and based on the look on Dream's face, he could sense it. Knife was watching Ink closely- in the way Killer did when he was analyzing him, making a mental copy of him and picking it apart piece by piece like a puzzle, figuring him out. Ink looked away from Knife especially, trying to avoid the hollow eye sockets that were boring into him, and he pulled up the dark gray scarf around his neck over his mouth, pulling the scarf attached to it over his skull and burying himself in it, the conversation outside of the clear walls becoming more indistinct as he paid less attention to it. He flinched as he heard someone teleport into the cell with him, and he looked up to see Knife crouched in front of him, white eyelight in his eye socket, showing Sheath was awake.
"hey, pal." Knife greeted, keeping his voice low, "you in pain?" Ink nodded a little after a moment, and Knife hummed, "i thought so. once you're emotionless for a while, any physical sensations when you're not... ick. yeah, it's gonna hurt..."
"i-it does..." Ink whispered, voice still hoarse and quiet.
"sounds like it." Knife noted, shifting on his feet to inch closer, "dream really wanted to come in here, but he'd be all huggy and touchy-feely, but you're probably not feeling all to up to that, are you?" Ink shook his skull no, keeping his movements small and slow, something Knife seemed to notice, "i wonder if they're jealous yet, that i'm in here trying to help you before they can be. you don't mind, do ya?"
Ink shrugged a little, still keeping some distance between them, mumbling, "i d-don't wanna hu-urt anyone e-else..."
"you're not hurting me, are you?" Knife questioned, and Ink shook his skull no, "you can barely even move, ink. you can't hurt anyone, even if he was trying to make you. he's gone, ink. your head's your own again. no passengers, or rather, other drivers in there."
"y-you don't know wh-what i-" Ink started, but Knife cut him off.
"ahtatatatatatatada." Knife shushed him, moving a bit nearer to him, "i don't need all the details, i can get the picture from how you're acting. . . . y'know, i've seen that look before, be it on sheath in his reflection, or even on murder." They were on speaking terms now?... "point is, it wasn't you."
"it-" Ink started, but Knife shushed him again.
"hey, no. save your words." Knife told him, "listen to me. if you'd done those things willingly or on your own, you wouldn't feel so awful about them right now. sure, everyone has regrets, but there's a point where it becomes more than that. you are horrified of yourself, ink. you did things you would've never done in a million years, and that's the point, isn't it? it wasn't all you. shattered-" Ink flinched, "-was in your head, pulling strings and making you his weapon. you were brainwashed."
Ink looked down, tightening his grip on his legs, and Knife scooted a little closer, slowly reaching out and putting his hands on his elbows, touch feather-light and ready to pull back if Ink flinched back.
"hey..." Knife started again, getting Ink to look at him, "i know how you're feeling, ok? i understand it, just like sheath does. he'd be out here, but he's not all to happy about what happened, and you need calm right now, don't you? someone to keep a level head to keep you as relaxed as you can be?"
Ink nodded after a moment, whispering, "i-it helps..."
"i know it does, buddy. that's why they agreed for me to come in here by you until you're ready to talk to them. sure, they aren't happy, but they know you need space and time to relax. you've been through hell, ink. as much as they want to be here for you, and believe me, they do, they aren't calm enough right now to talk to you without getting worked up at him and making you get scared. you're probably really scared right now, aren't you?" Ink nodded a little, "yeah, i thought so. you wanna tell me of what, besides you hurting them, because we've already agreed that's impossible right now, even without these walls."
Ink looked down, fidgeting a little with his fingers, and Knife adjusted his footing a bit again, getting even closer, but only slightly, and he mumbled, "him..."
"yeah, i thought so..." Knife said softly, "scared he'll get to you again? make you hurt them?" Ink nodded slightly, shivering, "so you admit it wasn't you? that it was him making you?"
Ink paused, looking up at him, jaw dropping slightly as he tried to think of a response, but his mind drew a blank, so instead he looked down again, curled in on himself despite the pain. Knife removed his hands from Ink's elbows, shifting to sit next to Ink.
"were you and killer close?" Knife asked after a moment, and Ink looked up at him for a moment before looking away again, nodding, "yeah, i figured. i saw the look on your face. why do you think that was?"
"h-he und-derstood wh-what it f-felt li-ike..." Ink whispered, voice cracking, "t-to f-feel empt-ty..."
Knife nodded a bit, questioning, "he didn't like him much, did he?" Ink shook his skull no, "yeah, i can't imagine anyone could. not with how much he reminds me of them... but this isn't about them. this is about you, realizing that he was the one hurting everyone. he messed with your mind, your sense of self... that wasn't you, ink. never for a moment think you would ever do anything like what he made you on your own, ok?"
"o-ok..." Ink agreed.
"is that just you agreeing with me?" Knife asked, and Ink shook his skull no again, "just makin' sure. you wanna talk to dream yet? i think he'll be able to keep a cool head. if he can't, i'll come in and get him out for you, ok? i'll be watching out there- speaking of, you still want these walls up?"
Ink nodded a little, and Knife nodded in understanding, wrapping an arm loosely around his shoulders, giving him a soft squeeze, and Ink leaned against his side, eye sockets squeezed shut as he soaked in the genuine comfort, not Boss's version. Knife wasn't empathetic or emotional, but he still knew what helped, and he didn't have any ulterior motives. Ink... really appreciated the gesture. Knife waited a few moments before pulling way, standing up and walking to the other end of the cell, teleporting out.
"dream, go on in, just try being quiet and calm, alright? do not stress him out." Knife told Dream, who nodded.
"of course, i just-" Dream started, and Knife cut him off, something he seemed to have a habit of doing.
"i know. i know you're pissed at you-know-who, but rein it in, otherwise i'm gonna go in there, take you out, and stay with him, alright?" Knife said, and Dream nodded. Knife saw a look from Color, who seemed proud from what Ink could see, and Knife responded to it, "oh come on, don't give me that look."
". . ." Color kept it up, smiling, and Knife sighed, looking off to the side.
"ugh, murder's makin' me go soft. i've spent too many damn nights calming him down from nightmares once he actually sleeps, not to mention the damn classes from sheath..." Knife muttered, and Ink tried to process what all that entailed as Knife walked away, leaning against one of the walls with his arms crossed, Color teleporting over to him.
Ink glanced back at Dream, making brief eyelight contact before Ink looked away, guilt returning to him again. Dream teleported into the cell a moment later, sitting on his knees across from Ink, looking at him with that stupid kicked puppy face that made Ink feel even more guilty. Dream didn't deserve to have to go through all of this because of him...
"i-i'm sor-" Ink started to apologize, but Dream gently interrupted him.
"ink, no, it's ok. none of this was your fault, ok? just like knife said." Dream told him, hesitating before asking, "are.... are you scared of me... after him?..."
Ink shook his skull no, "n-no... he.... boss m-made it v-very clear y-you two were di-fferent..."
"you don't have to keep calling him that, ink..." Dream told him softly, "you're free."
"wh-what if he's still wa-tching?.." Ink asked.
"i promise you, he can't be. his magic is gone from inside of your mind, ink. he has no control over you anymore." Dream reassured, gently holding his hand, "it's ok."
Ink still wasn't completely certain, but he didn't say anything, instead resting his skull on his knees while he tried to ignore the pain that was still wracking his body. He wanted so badly to tell Dream about Daybreak, about what Boss's plan was, to attempt to warn him, but he couldn't make his jaw move to say it. It was like his body refused to speak of what had happened. Even with Boss's threat, Ink still wanted to warn Dream about what was coming- about what was already being set in place, but he couldn't. Ink wondered if Boss had done something to his mind to keep him quiet- some form of block in him that prevented him from being able to warn Dream or anyone about what was coming, and that only made him feel worse. Dream seemed to mistake the emotions he was feeling, though, slowly and gently wrapping an arm around his shoulders.
"ink, you won't hurt me, we both know that," Dream told him, "you don't have to keep worrying about it." It's not just me I'm worried about. I can't stop it from happening. I can't warn you that you're going to- "it's ok, ink. i promise, you're safe here, and so is everyone else. nothing bad will happen.... i overheard you telling knife that you were in pain? do you want me to heal you?..."
Ink shook his skull no, eyelights looking down at the floor of the cell, "n-no..."
"sci has some food with healing potion mixed into it. i know you don't eat, but-" Dream started, but Ink interrupted quietly/
"i've umm.... i've been eating, recently... eating and sleeping..." Ink wasn't going to go into detail on how he had had to sleep.
". . . oh, well that's a good thing?" Dream didn't seem sure of how to respond, "are you hungry?"
Ink paused, unsure, before nodding a little. He wasn't that hungry, getting his vials back seeming to help him with the constant hunger and exhaustion that had worn on him for weeks, but if the food had healing potion mixed into it, he wasn't going to refuse it. Ink saw Sci leaving from his peripherals, and he saw Knife on his phone, and then it started ringing and playing a ringtone.
'You're so upset with me, but I'm so obsessed with you!~ I'm ####ing crazy, I don't wanna damage you!~ But don't ####in' test me, my mental's unsteady-!~'
Knife answered, greeting, "hey murdy birdy, you get my texts?"
Some silence, which Ink spent contemplating how well Knife and Murder had started getting along, before Knife said, "yeah, he's at sci's lab, i texted you about most of it." Some silence, "oh i'm so sorry my grammar is poor. i can't believe i offended your high standards of spelling and punctuation, your royal highness of literature." A bit more silence, well, aside from Knife snickering, "alright, alright.... yeah, we can talk about it later, sheath wants to vent to you, which, weird but whatever.... yeah yeah, see you then, just making sure ink's doing alright first." Silence, and then Knife sighed before replying, "i'll have to tell ya later, alright?" Brief silence, "yeah, see ya."
Knife hung up, slipping his phone into his pocket again before starting to talk with Color, and Ink looked up at Dream in confusion before asking quietly, "wh-when did th-ey get s-so close?..."
"it's... i don't even know..." Dream admitted with a sigh, "i have a lot to catch you up on. i'm just relieved with the fact that i'll be able to now... i really missed you, ink.."
"e-even after our fight?..." Ink questioned hoarsely, having not forgotten about that yet.
"ink, the last thing i care about right now is that. we can work all of that out later, ok? i'm just relieved to have you back." Dream answered, squeezing his shoulder gently and reassuringly.
Ink really hoped what he'd been saying while Boss was in his head hadn't gotten to Dream, but he had a sinking suspicion that it had. He opened his mouth to apologize, but all that left him was a hoarse gasp and a croak before he started coughing, Dream patting his back, looking at him in concern. Ink held up a thumbs up to show him that he was alright, despite not feeling it, and he eventually was able to stop his hacking fit, just sitting against Dream's side, in mild agony and trying to focus on his breathing, which was hoarse and shaky. Sci eventually teleported in with some food- soup, to be specific, and Ink shakily accepted it with trembling hands and a nod of thanks before starting to eat. The liquid felt heavenly on his throat, which felt like it'd been burned by acid, and it was already to start feeling a bit better.
"how are you feeling, ink? any better?" Sci asked, and Ink nodded a bit.
"y-yeah, thank you..." Ink responded.
"of course. you won't be in here forever, just as long as you want to be. i locked you into this au to block you from teleporting out, just as a precaution until he's gone." Sci told him, "reality and millianna have been working on using the rift to send shattered back to his multiverse where reality can keep dealing with him."
Ink flinched a bit when Sci said Boss's name, but he tried disguising it as getting more comfortable against the wall.
"mi-illia-anna?..." Ink questioned, the name not familiar.
"she's an alphys i met a while back in the omega timeline. she comes over to visit sometimes when we aren't working on science projects, our current one being evicting... you know, from our multiverse." Sci described, and Ink nodded a little bit.
Ink just didn't want to be anywhere near Boss again; he would be perfectly fine just staying here forever if it meant Boss couldn't get to him... . . . Error was definitely going to rub it in his face how he was right he was about the whole 'brainwashed idiot' thing... Sci handed Ink a straw when Ink's hands got too shaky to use the spoon to scoop up the broth steadily, Ink giving him a thankful nod before starting to use it, drinking the liquid that was like honey against his throat right now.
Ink tried raking through his memories again on why his throat hurt so bad, and he was faintly able to remember throwing up black goo with an amber aura around it- which was likely Boss's magic that he'd had in him. Looking back further, he remembered seeing Dream firing one of his arrows at him, prompting the vomiting of his magic, and that... definitely explained why his throat hurt so much... Ink finished off the soup after a bit longer, Sci taking the empty bowl from him as he slowly relaxed, the healing potion easing most of the pain. As his tension slowly eased, the toll the day had taken on him, coupled with his already present exhaustion from earlier... Ink felt like he would pass out.
He still wasn't sure why he felt tired now, or why he felt hungry, or how to tell Dream and the others about this, but he did know it was getting harder to stay awake. He leaned further against Dream's side, eye sockets growing heavier as he tried forcing himself to stay awake. He couldn't sleep without Bo- ... wait, could he?... Ink wasn't completely sure, but he was sure he wouldn't be awake for much longer, quickly leaning all of his weight against Dream's side without meaning to, but not having the strength to pull away.
"are you ok?" Dream asked him, a concerned whisper, and Ink nodded a little.
"just tired..." Ink mumbled quietly, yawning a little.
"you can get some sleep, ink. i'll be right here with you." Dream told him, and Ink shrugged a little.
"you don't have to-"
"ink." Dream cut him off, sternly but gently, "i'm not going anywhere, ok? if not just for your sake, for mine? so that i can reassure myself that you're safe again?"
Ink was quiet for a moment before nodding, mumbling an "ok..." and burying his skull against Dream's armpit, eye sockets getting heavier by the moment.
"sci, can we get a blanket please?" Dream requested the skeleton outside of the cell, who nodded and headed to a closet.
Ink was mostly asleep before Sci teleported in with the blanket what had to be a few moments later, just vaguely aware of Dream putting the warm, fluffy and soft fabric over him before he slipped completely into unconsciousness.
Knife was leaning against the wall in Sci's lab, watching Ink curled up sleeping against Dream's side from inside of the containment chamber. Ink probably hadn't even noticed Top was sitting against the wall closest to Ink, watching him with a few tears in his eye sockets.
"I still wish we could be in there at the very least..." Aster muttered from near Knife, watching Ink sadly.
"yeah, but that wouldn't do him any good." Knife told him, "he's getting overwhelmed very easily right now, and he needs to handle this one step at a time. he might not have hurt you guys personally too much, but that doesn't mean it's easy for him to look you in the eye sockets after everything that bastard had him doing; it was difficult enough with dream, and you two are his adopted parents. he needs time to process what happened, forgive himself a bit so he can realize you don't hold anything against him."
"But we would never-" Top started, albeit quietly.
"i know, it's just the matter of trying to convince him that." Knife sighed.
'you did good.' Sheath told him, and Knife grumbled a bit under his breath.
'i had to. you saw the look on his face. none of these guys would've been able to handle it.' Knife responded, rolling his eyelight.
'yeah, but you chose to take initiative... so thank you...' Sheath thanked him.
'don't mention it..' Knife told him, '. . . seriously, don't.'
"DO YOU THINK INK WILL BE OK?..." Swap asked, and Knife sighed.
"i dunno. i mean the guy's understandably a wreck. he'll probably recover eventually, but right now... yeah he's got some damage..." Knife sighed, "color, think you can work your magic?"
Color laughed a little before shaking his skull no, "no, i think dream has it handled... you did good, too."
"damnit, not you too..." Knife grumbled, crossing his arms with a huff, and his phone chimed again from within his pocket.
Knife grabbed it, turning it on to see the emo Hello Kitty wallpaper on his lock-screen, creating the pattern to unlock the device before tapping on the messaging app, seeing Murder's text.
angrE brd How is he?
Knife took a moment to read the text and figure out how to type the response before replying.
You gud. dooing betR. wanna talc? i cant tiep gud.
Knife waited a moment before he finally got a response.
angrE brd no 💩. park?
Knife typed out his reply before pushing send.
You yea, worx. bench wair wE kissed? 😏
angrE brd why tf is that one of the only words you can type properly?
Knife narrowed his eye sockets, trying to figure out what Murder had said, but he couldn't read as well as you guys can.
You big wordz 😵💫, 🍑🕳️...
angrE brd 🖕
Knife snickered, and he shut his phone off and slipped it back in his pocket, "well, with that, i gotta go meet up with someone, so i'll catch you on the flip side."
"say hi to murder for me." Color told him, and Knife sighed, shoulders slumping.
"yeah yeah, i will..."
"wait, you know about it?" Sci questioned.
"how do you know about it?" Color responded, giving Knife a 'really?' look.
Knife just smirked in response, feigning innocence.
"WAIT, KNOW ABOUT WHAT?" Swap asked.
"knife and murder are a thing." Sci answered, Knife teleporting out of the AU with a snicker as he heard the hushed, shocked yelling start.
Knife appeared at a very familiar bench, Murder already sitting there, looking down at his phone before his eyelights flicked up to look at Knife.
"what the hell happened?" Murder asked, "how the hell did you get ink away from shattered?"
"i tricked him!" Knife chirped, and he plopped down on the bench next to Murder, "after i figured something out."
"and that was?..." Murder questioned.
"hey, this is kinda nice. most of the time you never want me to talk~" Knife snickered, and Murder glared at him.
"knife." Murder said lowly.
"fine, fine. i was thinking about it, and ink wouldn't just be obeying shattered to avoid pain; when you're emotionless all your senses are dulled; you don't care about being hurt at all, you just feel... empty. i was recoded by them to listen to them, or well, sheath was, but i exist because of that... anyways, i realized something similar must've happened to ink, and since he doesn't have code, i figured shattered probably went in there and had some fun rewiring him."
"damn..." Murder muttered with a grimace, "that... couldn't have been pleasant for him."
"yeah, it definitely wasn't. anyways, i had the conversation with dream in an au, knowing the negativity would get shattered's attention, and i brought up using the rift as a plan to send shattered back, which led to error taking us to it once he showed up." Knife explained.
"so you used it as bait..." Murder summarized.
"precisely!" Knife nodded. "which then led to ink attacking up, since i knew shattered would use him to snoop, and then i beat the crap out of him and got him restrained so dream could use an arrow on him, exorcising shattered's magic from him." Knife smirked, leaving out the detail of how Shattered had been able to see through Ink's eyelights.
"and then you got him his vials?" Murder asked.
"yeah, had him drink them while he was unconscious... when he woke up, he was... not the best." Knife admitted, "scared of hurting any of us, and i talked to him. also i blame you, you made me go soft." Knife glared.
"oh, and you not being a complete awful person has nothing to do with that?" Murder questioned, and Knife sighed, rolling his nonexistent eyelights.
"shut it... i already had to deal with color being proud of me in front of everyone.." Knife grumbled.
'it is something for him to be proud of. you've come a long way..' Sheath mentioned.
'oh great. you're back.' Knife thought flatly, earning an offended huff.
'can i have control now that you've gotten to brag to your boyfriend?' Sheath requested.
'i told you it was just for the lols! there's nothing going on, i told you that.' Knife thought back, slightly irritated.
'riiiiiiight. you weren't lying when you told me you thought he was ho-' Sheath started to respond, but Knife cut him off.
'don't even start! granted he's not the worst looking skeleton i've ever seen, i don't feel anything romantic towards him! it was just to amuse myself by making others speculate and ship, and murder used it as a way to piss off famine. we'll have a 'big dramatic fight' soon and that'll be that. no more prank.' Knife told him.
'. . . you just won't admit you're a simp.' Sheath snickered, and Knife was torn between cursing him out and laughing, having not expected him to say that, 'seriously though, can i have control?'
'. . . fine...' Knife relented, and he allowed Sheath to take control, Murder noticing relatively quickly.
"hey, sheath." Murder greeted, "you ok?"
". . ." Sheath was quiet, Knife feeling the anger in their shared mind, "i am going to kill shattered."
"yeah i figured as much." Murder sighed, "you know you can't, right? he's immortal."
"i will help kill him, and then desecrate his corpse." Sheath revised.
'geez, even i can never get you this upset~" Knife chuckled, and Sheath rolled his eyelight at him.
"how bad was he, knife didn't go into much detail-" Murder started to ask, but Sheath cut him off.
"he was awful!" Sheath exclaimed, "when i first saw him after he woke up, he was so terrified, so in pain... he wouldn't let anyone near him, and i could see on his face he was just waiting for something bad to happen, like shattered to show up. i... me and knife never saw him like that before..."
Sheath stood up from the bench, starting to pace, "and then i couldn't even handle looking at him! he reminded me so much of how i felt after they recoded me to kill everyone! how i'd get moments of clarity and realize what i was doing; who i was hurting. i... i couldn't even stop myself! they just puppetted me around, and the knowledge that ink had gone through that and was facing the brunt of everything at once, it was no wonder he was scared! he even thought everything was his own fault! can you believe it?!" Sheath turned to Murder, arms thrown out in exasperation.
"w-" Murder couldn't even get a word out before Sheath was ranting again.
"of course it wasn't his fault! he was being mind controlled! brainwashed! he couldn't even look his own parents in the eye out of shame! shame, murder!! like he was responsible for what shattered had him doing! shattered had him so messed up he blamed himself for all the deaths! the torturing! the words! it wasn't him! and yet he was so scared of hurting anyone in the same room as him! he wanted to be locked in the containment cell alone because he couldn't even trust himself!" Sheath paced even more, getting himself stressed out again.
"sheath-" Murder started, but Sheath kept going.
"and then, then! once knife talked to him and was actually really nice and gentle with him, which was actually the nicest i've seen him act besides with color or when you have really bad nightmares, and you two are in a relationship!" Sheath exclaimed.
"we are not-!" Murder began to correct.
"no!" Sheath cut him off, "anyways, yeah, nicest i've seen from that sociopath since i've known him, and i've known him for years! we went to therapy together!"
'talking to color is not therapy!' Knife snapped.
'it's therapy!' Sheath insisted, 'and murder got you hello kitty boots. deal with it.'
Knife didn't know how to respond to that, but Sheath didn't give him the chance before he was ranting again, "and then how he reacted with dream! he was so guilty! and it wasn't even his fault! shattered brainwashed him, and-!" Murder was right there as Sheath turned around, mid-pace, and Murder grabbed and held his shoulders.
"sheath, i know. stressing yourself out won't do you any good though, ok? we don't need you and knife going into three in the middle of a park. it was bad enough trying to calm you down last week."
'we agreed not to talk about that, you jerk!!' Knife thought at him.
"yeah, i know... it's just..." Sheath trailed off as Murder led him to sit on the bench again, "it was devastating.... i knew he'd be in a bad headspace, but that was so much worse than i thought it would be..."
"yeah, i know.." Murder sighed, releasing their shoulders, "i haven't even seen him yet and i can tell it's probably bad from what you two were saying."
"it was horri-!" Sheath started to exclaim.
'we know!' Knife snapped at him, and Sheath shut their mouth.
"sorry..." Sheath apologized.
"it's ok. you're upset." Murder reassured, "you, unlike knife, get upset."
"he does get upset sometimes, he just.... it takes a lot." Sheath tattled, "most of the time he feels my emotions, but... sometimes he does get feelings. i wasn't the only one upset... granted he was mad because ink said shattered had helped him like color helped us, but still."
"yikes..." Murder grimaced, and Sheath yawned, Murder yawning a moment later and asking, "you ok?"
"yeah, just tired... ranting took a lot out of me, i guess..." Sheath admitted, and Murder nodded a bit.
'can i have control back?' Knife questioned, not wanting to be bored out of his mind or have to try and keep sheath awake since he hated sleeping, especially in control of their body.
"sure..." Sheath mumbled, Knife taking control back as Sheath settled into a quietish corner of their mind, and Knife sighed.
"well that was something." Knife sighed, slumping against the back of the bench, looking over at Murder, "thanks for putting up with him."
"it was fine, knife. expressing emotions isn't a bad thing." Murder responded, rolling his eyelights.
"yeah, whatever..." Knife muttered, glancing over at him, "you slept recently?"
"ugh... like two days ago?" Murder estimated.
"hey, that's less time than me." Knife smirked, "nice."
"i'm only tired because of the stupid meds." Murder huffed.
"yeah, figures. you might wanna rest up, though. dream was talking about sending shattered back to his multiverse- that's still a plan. sci and an alphys are working out the details for it, but it involves the rift." Knife informed, "so you might wanna rest up."
"nah, i'll be fine." Murder responded, "so this means dream'll let me fight without me having to sneak to the au? nice."
"you mean me having to sneak you to the au?" Knife corrected with a smile, and Murder sighed before nodding.
"yes, that.." Murder sighed, "will you take me to sci's lab when you head back over?"
"yeah, i'll probably head back in the morning." Knife nodded, "sci thinks we're a thing, by the way. he told swap too."
"damnit..." Murder cursed, "we have to have that big fight soon."
"yeah, but i don't feel like plotting that out right now. tumblr?" Knife offered, knowing it was his secret weapon for getting murder to go to sleep.
"tumblr." Murder nodded.
"i mess up your algorithm yet with all the stuff i sent you?" Knife asked, and Murder sighed.
"it's all cat stuff, knife." Murder deadpanned, "i was an encyclopedia for starve's pet cat rock."
"i still wanna pet it." Knife mumbled, Murder having sent him several pictures of the white cat sleeping on Famine.
"i think famine would chop your hand off." Murder told him.
"awwww, worried about me?~" Knife smirked, and Murder rolled his eyelights.
"fine, get amputated, i don't care." Murder huffed, grabbing his phone from his pocket, turning it on and typing out the password.
"so cruel~" Knife snickered, settling in next to him to look down at his phone as he opened UnderTumblr and started scrolling.
"i will refuse to read memes to you." Murder threatened.
"shutting up now." Knife reassured, Murder smirking as he looked back down at his phone.
'. . . gayyyyy.' Sheath thought.
'shut the hell up, sheath!' Knife snapped as Sheath started wheezing in his mind.
Knife sighed, looking over Murder's shoulder as he scrolled through the homepage, and after a while, Knife pulled up his own phone to compare their feeds, Murder looking over his shoulder. Knife was in the middle of scrolling when he felt weight on his shoulder, and he smirked. He looked over, seeing Murder's skull resting on his shoulder, out cold, and Knife smirked victoriously. UnderTumblr and Clozapine, the dynamic duo on making Murder sleep.
"works like a charm..." Knife grinned, shutting his phone off and slipping it into his pocket.
He shifted on the bench, hooking one arm under Murder's knees and the other behind his shoulders, hand on his armpit. He stood up, lifting up Murder effortlessly, shifting him in his arms as he started walking back to Story's place with Murder held against his chest. He could teleport, yes, but that usually woke up Murder, he'd tried it before. So, he had to walk from the park to Story's house while everyone else in the Omega Timeline was sleeping. Knife's footsteps were silent, which helped to not wake up the annoyingly light sleeper, and he slowly made his way back. Sheath wasn't saying anything, so he probably passed out, which was a good thing because they showed up; a pitch black shadow of them with a gray smiley face, flushed cheeks, and a stripe across their chest.
'Well well well, it's been a while, huh, partner?' They smiled.
'what do you want?' Knife questioned mentally.
'Oh, not much. Just asking how long it'll take you to kill him, like you did everyone else you cared about that wasn't unkillable.' They smiled, and Knife narrowed his eye sockets.
'i don't care about him.' Knife stated.
'You do, in your own way. You just won't admit it to yourself.' They giggled, 'Oh, it is hilarious watching you deny you consider Murder a friend! You don't want to lose him, and now that Murder and Famine are on speaking terms again, you're worried that you will! Especially with the big fight planned!' They grinned at him, 'How pathetic are you?'
'not as pathetic as you.' Knife responded as they walked backwards in front of him, tightening his grip on Murder again.
'How am I pathetic? You killed me, who created you-'
'i never asked to be created.' Knife deadpanned, 'you took the liberties of doing that. your death was your own fault. i didn't feel like being your pawn anymore.'
'Cute. You think you're not.' They smiled, and they vanished, taking Murder's place in his arms, a knife through their chest, 'You never stopped, no matter what Color or Murder or Dream have told you.'
'get off of his face.' Knife hissed, and they vanished, leaving Murder with the knife through his ribcage blood exiting his mouth.
No no no no no no no no no NO. No. That was not real. Knife blinked quickly, grip tightening on Murder further. If Murder was dead, he would be dust. He wouldn't be here. This wasn't real. Knife tried to steady his shakier breathing which had started to speed up, and he shut his eye sockets, focusing on Murder's weight in his arms, grounding himself as their laughter grew louder. When he opened his eye sockets again, he looked at Murder, who was still sound asleep in his arms, no knife or blood.
'And you said you didn't care about him~' They laughed, 'How adorable!~'
'go rot in hell already. leave me alone.' Knife glared at them as he started walking again.
'Maybe you should try some of Murder's meds; see what those do, hmm?~' They smiled, and Knife bristled.
'no. i don't need some stupid pills to deal with you. i'll do that myself.' Knife responded.
'With what? The power of friendship?' They taunted, and he mentally flipped them off.
'just buzz off. i don't feel like dealing with you right now, or for sheath to wake up, see you, and panic. so go away.' Knife told them.
'Oh please! Now you're trying to convince me to leave you alone on behalf of that pathetic mess!' They burst out laughing.
'on behalf of myself so i don't have to deal with him having a panic attack!' Knife snapped, summoning several sharp bones out of the ground, stabbing through them, 'now leave. my friend is trying to sleep.'
They vanished in a puff of black smoke and shadows, and Knife scoffed before freezing, looking down at Murder as he moved around a bit in his arms. He didn't move much, skull just resting heavier against Knife's chest, his soul illuminating his sleeping face slightly, and Knife let himself smile a bit. Good. Still sleeping. Knife kept walking, no more disturbances from them, and he made it to Story's house after a bit more walking.
He teleported to the living room as carefully as he could, bracing himself as Murder stirred again, Knife staying perfectly still, watching him intently as he silently willed him to stay asleep. Thankfully Murder didn't wake up, and Knife made his way over to the couch, carefully setting him down on it. He slipped his arm out from under his knees easily enough, but his other one was more of an issue. Murder's arm had shifted to squeeze Knife's hand between it and his ribs, and Knife couldn't move his hand without waking up Murder, who would of course stay up for the rest of the night, unable to fall back asleep.
Knife sighed, knowing Murder would probably kill him in the morning as he settled down on the couch, there just enough room if Knife wanted to hang halfway off of the couch, which he put up with. Murder stayed asleep, pressed against his side and in his sleep, his arm went over Knife's ribcage, squeezing his hand further. Knife's jaw dropped slightly, looking around just to make sure no one else was seeing this while also to check if anyone else was seeing this OH MY GOD.
Knife planned on slipping away the moment Murder stopped squeezing his hand against his ribcage, not wanting to deal with Murder being all pissy because Knife was trying not to wake him up, even though in all fairness, Murder was the clingy sleeper here, that wasn't Knife's fault. So he sighed quietly, grabbing his phone from his pocket again and scrolling through it, but eventually his thumb grew sluggish, and Knife vaguely registered his phone thumping against his chest as his eye sockets slid closed.
Murder was going to kill him. Especially if anyone found them/got pictures. Murder might actually die of embarrassment first, so maybe Knife had a chance at surviving this... Maybe.

Multiverse Madness Chapter Fifty
Dream hadn't been able to track down Killer or Ink, despite how much he looked. Killer was invisible to his detection, just like Ink was, and they were either setting things on fire in already negative timelines, or they were going to timelines that there was simply no other life there. Even after being out of the stone for so long, Dream still had troubles narrowing down negative emotions outside of sensing auras, which had grown more difficult, likely due to Bill doing something to mask Nightmare's and Shattered's presences. Out of any allies Nightmare could've made, Bill was probably the most difficult for Dream to deal with, a fact Nightmare probably enjoyed greatly.
Dream sighed, standing in front of a forest house in the Zephyrtop, whose occupants wouldn't be happy to know about what had happened to Ink. The house was in Zephyrtop, and it was... colorful, to say the least. It was a mix of gothic and circus, with primarily cobblestone walls with colorful banners around the windows. The door was wooden, painted red, and there was a smaller, Ink-sized door in the middle of it, the windowsills were white with blots of other colors, and the roof of the two-story house was purple shingles with bits of confetti on them.
Ink had personally made the house for the Gasters he considered his father figures, and from what Dream heard, it was common for some sort of renovation or add-on to be made when Ink got inspiration for it. Dream had met them before, and they got along well, but as far as Dream knew, Top and Aster weren't aware of what happened between him and Ink, or what happened to Ink afterwards... Dream looked behind himself, seeing Error coming through a glitching white portal, and he was confused.
"error? what are you doing here?- wait, how do you know where this is?" Dream asked.
"reaper won't leave me alone, and ink dragged me here sometimes after we truced." Error shrugged.
Dream had no idea about that, honestly, and as much as he wanted to ask more about it, he needed to talk with them. He'd been putting it off long enough, anyways...
"and you're here avoiding reaper because...?" Dream trailed off.
"i don't feel like dealing with him, i don't want to talk to him about something i don't remember, much less want anything to do with." Error replied, "also if ink texts again that might be useful?"
"actually.... yeah, that would be." Dream nodded, "do you want to go in?"
"i mean that's the point of this, right?" Error questioned, and Dream sighed before nodding a bit.
He stepped up to the door, reaching up and pressing the balloon-shaped doorbell, which played a circus music theme for a few seconds before it stopped. The door opened, a Gaster standing there, who Dream recognized as Top. He was wearing a purple suit with mint green cuffs, a light yellow undershirt, a light blue tie, and black shoes.
"Hm? Oh, Dream, Error! Come in!" Top invited, opening the door for them, Dream stepping in first, and Error following him after a moment.
The inside of the house was also colorful, with a fluffy colorful carpet, which was black with splotches of color all over, or maybe it was a bunch of colors with splotches of black?... Dream didn't think he would ever be sure. The walls were cobblestone, and had several shelves lining them, most being pictures, but there was a lot of dragon sculptures, and there was countless knickknacks scattered all over the shelves. It was almost cluttered, but in a way that was homey and inviting. The living room was right ahead, with a dark purple couch with different black designs all over it, glitter in the black patterns. There were two recliners with the same designs, which were on either side of a cobblestone fireplace across from the couch. There was a black wood coffee table in front of the couch, colorful balloon coasters on it, and Top led them into the living room. Error sat down on one of the recliners, and Dream sat down on the other, watching as Top went over to a staircase over to his right.
"Aster! Dream and Error are here!" Top called out.
"Coming!" Aster replied, and Top headed back over to the living room, sitting down on the couch.
A moment later, Aster came down the stairs, wearing his black cloak, the edges outlined in light yellow on the top, fading down to light purple past his waist. His hood was down, he had two metal spikes on either shoulder, the bottom half of his sleeves were wide, tattered, and the purple on the insides. He was wearing brown gloves, mostly hidden under his sleeves, and he was wearing a beige sweater under his cloak. The bottoms of his cloak split off into three pieces on either side, the front ones having a purple and light yellow symbol at the tops.
He was wearing black pants, beige tall socks, and black boots, white had two purple straps on the bottoms and one at the tops. Aster also had a tail, skeletal and splitting off into two ends at the tip, and he wore a large black scarf that came from under his hood, but the scarf looked like feathery wings, and might even act as wings. The lines Gasters typically had were more damaged than normal, splitting off into shatter-like cracks, and his left eye socket contained a white diamond eyelight, his right eyelight a circle.
"I'm surprised to see you so soon, Error, and without Ink inviting you here." Aster noted as he sat next to Top, and Error grumbled a bit.
"sure, 'inviting' me is one way to put it..." Error mumbled.
"Speaking of, I haven't seen Ink in a while; is he ok?" Top asked, and Dream and Error exchanged glances, "I know he was upset about your falling out after Blue, but he's normally never gone for this long, even with how forgetful he can be..."
"umm... about that..." Dream trailed off, mournful, and he looked down, "something... something happened...."
"What happened?" Aster asked, growing tense, and Top put his hand on his, gently squeezing it to reassure him.
"after our umm... falling out... ink got captured... it was another version of me, but like nightmare, and he... he did something to him..." Dream frowned, looking down at his lap.
"Is he hurt?" Aster asked, his tail starting to lash, scarf ruffling up, and Top looked between him and Dream, concerned.
"well, he was pretty messed up the first time he showed up, covered in-" Error started to not even slightly gently explain, and Dream cut him off.
"he isn't as bad as he was before! something happened to him mentally, though. he hasn't drank his vials in weeks, error found them in an au, or what was left of it, and he's still going... he hasn't been immobilized yet..." Dream informed.
"That's.... odd..." Top said, "I've seen him without them before, and it didn't take long for him to lose his colors. Me and Aster had to have him drink them again in order to help him, but otherwise nothing worked. You said he's been like this for weeks?"
"yes." Dream verified.
". . . How bad is he hurt? And be honest with me." Aster left no room for refusals, and Dream frowned.
"i don't know the full extent. fresh said his left arm was messed up, though, but it seemed mostly healed, just scarred." Dream answered.
". . . What's this other version's name?" Aster questioned.
"he's been calling himself shattered." Dream replied.
"The next time you see Shattered, call me. I'll have Betelgeuse ready." Aster said.
"aster, he's-" Dream started to try talking him out of it.
"I don't care if he's powerful, he hurt my son." Aster's tail was definitely lashing now.
"Zeph, I know you're upset, believe me, I am too, but we can't rush into things. We'll need a plan.... which means me and you are going to skip game night and start making revenge plots." Top told him, and Aster smiled a bit.
"Oh yes we are." Aster agreed.
"you're gonna have to count in getting around ink, too. shattered basically turned him into a puppet. he's gonna be like a guard dog to that freak, and i don't think he'll hesitate to hurt you." Error informed.
"as much as i don't like it, error's right... i haven't seen ink hesitate to hurt anyone, including me... i've never seen him like this before, and i... if i could hate, i would hate this..." Dream's hands shook, and he looked down at them as he folded them in his lap.
"We'll get him back. Me and Aster will help you however we can." Top informed, "Just tell us when you find him, and we'll bring him home."
"good luck with that. ink's been a slippery little brat." Error huffed, "me and fresh were chasing him for a while earlier, and once we finally managed to corner him, he put up a fight. speaking of, he doesn't hold back anymore, and he's been... acting..."
"Acting?" Top asked, "Did he inherit my theatrics ability?"
"Babe, he's adopted-" Aster started.
"Shhhhhh." Top shushed softly, pressing a finger to his mouth.
Aster's cheekbones turned purple, and Top planted a quick kiss on his mouth, causing the color to darken. Dream personally found it adorable, and Error was just looking off to the side, quiet. Dream could still sense Error's emotions, some of which were pretty... complicated. Error had mixed feelings towards Reaper, half of him feeling a sense of affection towards him, and the other half of him hated that half and the emotion it made him feel. It was strange to sense, to say the least, but Error was strangely hiding his emotions well.
Once Top pulled his finger away, Aster's blush settled, and he asked, "What did you mean acting?"
"he's acting like he has emotions, even though he doesn't. he lets the act drop sometimes, but it's still freaky. he acts like he enjoys what he's doing. doesn't matter what it is. not to mention him acting sadistic and like a brat." Error described.
"That... definitely isn't like him." Top frowned.
"He may not care for everyone, only having a few he holds dear, but he's never enjoyed someone suffering..." Aster frowned.
"exactly. dream hasn't really seen it yet, which lucky him, but ink's still a brat." Error huffed.
"error, he's their son-" Dream started.
"and he's being a brat." Error cut him off.
"he's their son and he's not thinking clearly." Dream knew Error talking about Ink's behavior like this couldn't be easy to hear.
"obviously, because he's being a brat." Error responded, and Dream sighed.
"I'm sure he'll be back to normal soon." Top spoke up, "We'll help get him back, get him his vials, and kick Shattered's coccyx while we're at it." Top said.
"i hope so..." Dream mumbled.
Ink teleported himself and Dust to the abandoned genocide timeline he told Killer about, and his bones were rattling with energy. The coffee had seemed like a good idea at the time, Ink having needed something to stay awake. However, he was regretting it as he had nowhere to go with that energy, and that wasn't helping. It reminded him of his yellow paint which he no longer needed, but he felt nothing emotionally, yet physically he felt too much. He felt like he could do anything, like he could run through an entire AU from the Ruins to the Barrier, like he could fight even the strongest being and take them to Shattered, if that's what his boss wanted him to do. He felt unstoppable, but he knew he wasn't. He was hyper, not ignorant of his limits. Shattered taught him better than that. He looked around the AU, seeing Killer teleport near them before walking over.
"hey, killer!" Dust greeted, heading over to him, and they met in the middle.
"hey, dusty! ink got into the caffeine, huh?" Killer smirked.
"yeah." Dust sighed, "i told violet that it was a bad idea."
"he doesn't have good ideas often." Ink remarked.
"no kidding. heh, you almost look like a regular sans with how dilated your eyelights are." Killer remarked.
Ink tilted his skull at that, and Killer grabbed his knife, showing Ink his reflection. His eyelights were wide, and they were shaking slightly.
"oh." Ink hummed, looking around.
Those trees all looked extremely climbable, like he could race up one, jump down and climb up another, if he didn't leap to another tree from the first one he climbed-
"woah woah woah, buddy." Killer grabbed his arm, and Ink realized he'd started running towards the trees, "take it easy, ok?"
"yeah, you passed out as soon as shattered came to get us, you woke up, and then you drank coffee to stay awake. you might feel energized, but you could still get hurt if you're sluggish." Dust agreed.
"so no trees?" Ink made himself sound disappointed.
"no trees." Killer denied, and Ink made himself frown.
"i can heal from anything." Ink pointed out.
"that doesn't mean you should have to." Dust told him.
Ink was quiet at that, looking off to the side, and he asked, "then can we set snow on fire?"
"snow's not flammable, pal." Killer informed, "we've already tried it."
"damn." Ink cursed quietly.
"but those trees are." Dust said.
"do you just want to set them on fire so i can't climb them?" Ink asked.
". . . let's start a forest fire!" Killer changed the subject, Dust silent, and Ink guessed the answer was a yes.
"can we make s'mores with the fire?" Ink questioned.
"i don't think you need more sugar, ink." Dust told him, "seems risky."
"what's the worst that could happen?" Killer asked.
". . ." Dust gave him a blank look.
". . . fair point." Killer sighed.
"what was the point?" Ink tilted his skull.
"that you don't need more energy." Killer replied, and Ink made himself pout.
"you don't gotta pout, y'know." Killer informed.
"i thought people were supposed to be annoying when hyper?" Ink questioned.
". . . ok fair." Killer relented.
"any tips?" Ink asked him.
"yeah, killer would know." Dust snickered, receiving a playful elbow from Killer.
"no, you would know, little brother~" Killer responded.
"you're literally being annoying right now!" Dust informed.
"nuh uh!" Killer denied.
"you can't resort to nuh uh every time!!" Dust snapped.
"yuh uh!" Killer grinned.
"killer, i swear to god!!!" Dust glared, and Killer snickered.
Ink tried taking the chance to get to a tree, thinking climbing just one wouldn't be a problem, but Killer was still gently but firmly holding his arm, preventing Ink from leaving. He was so filled with energy, and yet he couldn't get it out while Dust and Killer bickered like siblings. He wasn't impatient per say, but his bones thrummed with the need to move, the urge to get the caffeine out of his body, and he tried pulling Killer towards the trees, but the taller skeleton had his feet firmly planted in the snow. Ink tried more insistently, starting to run, only to find himself going nowhere, lifted off of the ground and held in the air. Ink turned his skull to glare at him a bit, and Killer just smirked at him.
Ink made himself sigh, "you've got to be kidding me."
Killer chuckled, putting him down, only to lift him back up once Ink tried running again.
"not so fast, pal. i know ya wanna burn off energy, sure, but you gotta stay in our sight. reality's abducted us before, he might try it with you, and there's no way of tracking you." Killer pointed out, and Ink sighed again.
"how is there any guarantee he'd be watching?" Ink asked.
"how is there any guarantee he's not?" Killer countered, and Ink looked off to the side.
He had a point...
"ok, fine..." Ink relented.
"paps has a point, we could do laps around snowdin." Dust spoke up, and Ink looked over at him.
Shattered instructed him not to tell Dust that 'Papyrus' was just a hallucination, and that he wasn't real, so Ink stayed quiet. Most Dusts and Murders hallucinated their dead brothers in different ways. Some were created from grief, some were magic constructs created by the wants and desires of the soul, twisted by LV to be horrific and twisted as the minds who brought them to existence, and were visible to others, mainly monsters with LV or who had a bond.
Others were actually able to manifest from leftover magic from Papyrus himself, latched onto the Sans's soul, but they were fragments of who the skeleton had been, or twisted by LV. Ink knew a Dusttale Sans in the Omega Timeline that came from a variant like this; he was in the popular band there, if he remembered correctly. He was, Ink knew he was; he could never forget a second when he was like this.
"what about the arson?" Ink questioned.
"oh that's the fun part. run around with a molotov and throw it if you have a good shot at something. then run around the flames." Dust smirked, and Ink nodded.
"sounds like a plan to me, dusty." Killer agreed, and so they started.
The three of them went to the Grillby's, grabbing every bottle of liquor there, along with all of the curtains and bedsheets from the Sans's and Papyrus's house, and they made mototovs using some lighters they found. Despite Ink not being able to forget anything, the next half hour passed in a blur, Ink, Dust, and Killer running all over the town, teleporting back to the bottles they'd lined up, grabbing them, and continuing. By the end, when Ink had burned off most off the energy, him, Killer, and Dust regrouped, most of the town in flames. Dust made a large pile of snow before sitting down on it, Killer doing the same, and Ink followed suit. Dust grabbed one of the unused bottles, popping the lid off, and taking a drink.
"couldn't help yourself, could ya?" Killer teased, grabbing a bottle for himself.
"why do you drink that stuff, anyways?" Ink asked.
"eh, habit?" Dust shrugged, "used to be a crutch for a long time, and it still kinda is, even if killing doesn't bother me anymore. high lv does that to you."
"but your first kills get to you?" Ink guessed, and Dust looked down.
". . . yeah. sometimes the voices get loud and the screams get louder. the booze drowns it out, and otherwise the lv does a good job... if it doesn't wear off too fast..." Dust looked off to the side.
"lv is addictive for that reason. it makes your pain lessen, but as you get more of it, it causes more pain, and then you need more lv to take it away, if only for a little." Ink said, looking down at the snow, "by the time those afflicted realize it, they can't stop. they just want the pain to stop, so they keep killing, relentless, trying to end their own suffering the only way they know how. it isn't just the power it gives you, it's the relief."
Ink looked up to see Killer and Dust looking at him in mild surprise, and Ink stayed quiet, unsure of what else to say.
". . . that's.. actually really accurate..." Dust admitted, looking away again.
"i know everything about the multiverse, i know what lv does to people. it's one of the main fundamental facts that makes up the multiverse itself, with how influential lv can be in scripts. it exists in every au." Ink mentioned.
"scripts?" Killer asked.
"it's how an au is supposed to go; the events that take place. every timeline is another script, created by differing events. your scripts were.... unfortunate, but there's countless others like you, with countless variants. there would be more if error hadn't destroyed so many, but there's still so many regardless." Ink explained.
"huh... so we just drew the short stick, huh?" Killer questioned.
"depends on how you look at it." Ink shrugged, "you could've ended up much worse."
"that's... totally reassuring." Dust attempted, and Ink made himself laugh a bit.
"how many timelines did nightmare and dream have?" Killer asked.
"only one, this one. granted there were other alternative ways things could have gone, but each of those timelines is in an alternate multiverse." Ink answered, "some aus just simply have one set path per multiverse; one script. dreamtale is one of those."
"that has to help dream's ego, having his damn au named after him." Dust grumbled.
"what's your beef with dream, anyways?" Killer questioned, "you never said."
"huh... i guess i never told you..." Dust mumbled, taking a long drink of the alcohol in his hand, finishing the bottle, "you wanna know?"
"uh... yes!" Killer replied, "the first time you saw him you were pissed!"
". . ." Dust sighed, "alright, alright. well, i actually knew dream before nightmare even showed up." That was a surprise to Ink. "he showed up thinking i was the threat, and he helped that damn thing that was killing everyone over and over."
". . . what?" Ink asked.
"yeah." Dust sighed, fists clenching after discarding the bottle by throwing it into the forest, "he kept interfering when i'd try beating the human to the kills, he'd fight me, which gave them enough time to kill whoever i was trying to kill while we were fighting, and then he'd help them stop me at the end."
"that..." Ink didn't know what to say to that.
That didn't sound like Dream at all. It might've been some form of imposter; the multiverse was full of shapeshifters, and Ink could think of a large number who had it out for Dream and would try souring his reputation, but he wasn't about to say that. If Dust hated Dream, that wasn't Ink's problem. Shattered would actually view it as useful, so Ink didn't deny anything Dust said.
"wait, seriously? no wonder you're so pissed at that guy!" Killer responded.
"yeah, between that and what he did to cross, i hate his nonexistent guts." Dust grumbled, and Killer looked off to the side with narrowed eye sockets.
"what'd he do to cross?" Ink asked, admittedly curious.
"he didn't tell you that either?" Dust questioned, and Ink shook his skull no.
"well, after cross joined, him and dream went off on their own, remember that?" Dust started, and Ink nodded, "well, turns out dream messed with his head; tried turning him on us."
"he just said he talked to him to me." Ink mentioned.
"he lied." Dust said, angry, but it wasn't directed at Ink, "after that fight cross was off; different, and then nightmare figured out what happened. killer had to help nightmare help cross, which entailed fighting him."
Ink wasn't sure what to say to that. It didn't sound like Dream either, but this couldn't have been a shapeshifter. Maybe Ink wasn't the only one lying during the duration of their friendship. Dream had abandoned him, after all, so maybe he didn't know Dream as much as he'd thought he had. If he had emotions, that would probably hurt a bit, but he didn't, so all he felt was cold indifference to it.
"yeah, that... that wasn't a fun day..." Killer sighed, and Ink realized how tired he'd been getting.
His eye sockets were heavy, and his limbs were heavier. He couldn't sleep without Shattered nearby, though. He knew how much Shattered wanted to protect him when he was vulnerable, and how much that might be needed. His boss was the best...
"i think i'm going to head back to the castle, see if shattered's back yet." Ink informed, making himself get up before he grew too tired to do so.
"you ok?" Dust asked.
"yeah, just tired." Ink nodded, stumbling a little, but he steadied himself as Killer and Dust got up to help him.
"you need me to teleport you back?" Killer offered.
"no, i've got it, thank you..." Ink denied, grabbing Broomie from it's sash, "see you around?"
"yeah, see you." Killer agreed, and Ink teleported himself back to Shattered's castle, not missing the look the exchanged as he left.
Ink appeared back in Shattered's castle, looking around tiredly as he wished Shattered could have stayed earlier to let him sleep. Shattered had had to take care of something at that Predatortale AU, and had had Ink wake up so he could deal with it. He was still behaving strangely, as ever since the attacks, Shattered had been acting weird, and Ink didn't like it.
He'd seen Shattered angry, he'd seen him happy, he'd seen him happy and angry, but he'd never seen him like this. He didn't know how to handle it, and he didn't like that fact. Ink walked through the root hallways, heading to his room, where Shattered had informed him he'd be waiting before he'd gone to Predatortale. Ink's movements were still somehow managing to grow more and more sluggish, his feet practically dragging on the floor as he approached his room.
The hallway spun slightly, and Ink held himself up on one of the walls, standing there and waiting for the dizziness to pass. Once it did, he kept walking, nearing his room, and he finally reached the door, pushing it open. Shattered was already sitting on the bed, his back resting against the headboard, and Ink walked further into the room, closing the door behind himself.
Ink started to bow, remembering the requirement after taking a few steps in, but he lost his balance, starting to fall. Luckily for him, Shattered caught him, extending his tentacles to catch him before he hit the ground. Ink looked up at him, giving him a tired expression of thanks, and Shattered lifted him up with his tentacles, putting him at the end of the bed.
"you don't need to bow this time, ink. not when you can barely walk." Shattered informed, an amused smirk on his face.
Ink nodded a bit, crawling over to him, something that made Shattered's smirk grow, and Ink tucked himself snugly against Shattered's right leg, his skull pressed against Shattered's hip, resting on his upper femur. Shattered pulled a fluffy black blanket over him, and as exhausted as he was, he still wanted to know why Shattered had been acting strange earlier. He seemed to be in a good mood now, but otherwise he'd been... off.
"boss?" Ink spoke up, looking up at him, and Shattered's amber eyelight looked down at him.
"yes, ink?" Shattered responded.
"why were you acting weird after the attacks?" Ink asked, and Shattered looked off to the side, "am i allowed to ask about that?"
Shattered sighed, "you are, i suppose, despite it being... complicated. i'd prefer you didn't ask about it; it's nothing you need to worry about, ink. i'm fine."
Shattered rubbed his skull reassuringly, despite the fact that Ink couldn't even feel concerned or worried, just confused. The look on his face was similar to the ones Dream had always had, as much as Ink tried to ignore that fact, but with the same attire, Ink found it difficult not to make comparisons.
"boss? why do you look like dream, even though you're nothing like him?" Ink questioned.
"well, it's mainly a way of pissing him off." Shattered smirked as he answered, before tilting his skull, asking, "why do you ask?"
"i was just curious." Ink replied.
"you didn't think i had the same fashion sense as my brother, did you?" Shattered chuckled, and Ink made himself smile a bit, but it showed how forced it was more than he wanted it to.
"no, boss." Ink shook his skull no.
"good. i still can't believe he can dress like a hobo and wear a crown like that." Shattered said, and Ink made himself laugh at Shattered's joke.
He was allowed to laugh at Shattered's jokes, just not at Shattered himself.
Shattered's form shifted after a few moments, rippling, altering his clothes. After a moment, the process was finished, with Shattered wearing a black sweater and pants, an amber belt around his waist, and a black vest appeared above his shirt, with dark amber cuffs and edges. There was a flare up around his neck, which faded to dark amber, and his shoulders were dark amber as well. Ink glanced down, seeing he had high heeled boots now, which were black with dark amber around the tops and in the soles and heels. Nightmare was probably going to hate that Shattered was taller than him now. Oh well.
"i wish i could've stayed here so you could sleep earlier, but things came up." Shattered told him after looking at him for a moment.
"it's ok, boss." Ink reassured him, eye sockets heavier.
"still, you poor thing..." Shattered cupped his cheekbone, his thumb rubbing under one of Ink's eye sockets, where Ink knew there was a dark mark present from his exhaustion, "you didn't sleep enough last night?"
"error and fresh chasing me and dust wore me out, so did killing the monsters in those aus... the fight with fresh took most of what was left of my stamina..." Ink explained, "the coffee kept me awake longer, though."
"ah, i see. an eventful day then, huh?" Shattered observed, and Ink nodded, "well, at least it's over now, and you can get your rest."
Ink wrapped an arm around Shattered's waist, something that made Shattered grin, and Ink said, "thank you, boss."
"of course, ink." Shattered smiled, petting Ink's skull, "you've earned it."
"boss?" Ink spoke up again.
"yes?" Shattered asked.
"what did you need to do in predatortale before?" Ink questioned.
"oh that? you'll see soon enough, don't worry." Shattered smirked, "well actually, you can't worry, so just don't let it occupy too much of that head of yours."
Shattered lightly tapped on Ink's skull for emphasis, and Ink nodded.
"of course not, boss." Ink pulled himself closer, and Shattered grinned down at him.
"good boy. now, get some sleep. you need it, after all." Shattered purred, and Ink felt his exhaustion grow exponentially at the word 'sleep'.
It was likely from Shattered using his sleeping magic on Ink to make him sleep, so Ink didn't resist it, letting it swallow him. He closed his eye sockets, feeling Shattered petting his skull, and he felt his body go figuratively boneless. Shattered chuckled, the sound seeming faint, and that was the last thing Ink processed before he fell fast asleep.
